River's Edge Veterinary Hospital Improving the Quality of every patients life, every time River’s Edge Veterinary Hospital was just an idea in February of 2007.

Dr. Karla was then working as an assistant professor and station veterinarian at the Dixon Springs Ag Center in Pope County. The Ag Center is a satellite research station of the University of Illinois and the College of Veterinary Medicine had a swine and beef herd there that Dr. Karla managed. Because of the financial crisis that the University was experiencing the College decided to close its pr

ogram in Pope County. Dr. Karla was offered a teaching position in Urbana but decided to strike out on her own instead. River’s Edge Veterinary Hospital opened its doors on October 29, 2007. Originally, REVH served both livestock and companion animals. However in August 2009, REVH became an exclusively small animal practice because the demand for small animal care became so great that there was no time for Dr. Karla to be away from the hospital to perform farm calls. Clients should expect an educational experience when they take their pets to REVH. Our staff is trained to teach clients about vaccines, parasite prevention, proper nutrition, spaying and neutering their pets, as well as any disease that their pet may be experiencing. Dr. Karla believes that if people understand why a good diet and proper preventative measures are so important to the 4 legged members of the family, people will be willing to provide a high level of care. Truly, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! River’s Edge Veterinary Hospital offers a wide range of services including: disease treatment, laser surgery, dentistry, radiology, dermatology, in house laboratory, preventative medicine, nutritional and behavior counseling. Our clean and comfortable facility boasts a new dental unit, a surgical laser and hematology/chemistry analyzer. Take a virtual tour on this website or come and meet us to see the hospital first hand!

Christmas is around the corner! As you work on your gift lists (or finish them you hardcore shoppers!) you will inevitably get to that aunt or uncle, parent or cousin that you have no idea what kind of present to get them. Instead of fruitcake or jelly of the month club, why not give them the gift of health for their furry loved ones!

We have gift certificates available for any amount you choose, and they never expire! Whether it is used for routine care, flea and tick medication, or held onto for an emergency illness, that little extra help when they need it can mean a lot!

Also, if you are thinking of giving someone a kitten or puppy for Christmas why not give the gift of a spay/neuter instead, with a promise of helping them find and adopt their perfect companion after the holiday craziness is over!

Stay Cool During This ! 🥵

Beware of heat exhaustion in your dog!!

Summer is in full force, and it is hot out there! Please remember: while you’re out hiking a trail, strolling through your neighborhood, or hopping across the sands, it’s hot for your dog, too!

Heat exhaustion in dogs can be an extremely emergent situation. We hear tragic stories about pets being left in poorly ventilated vehicles far too frequently, but your dog can also get overheated being left in a yard too long with inadequate shade or going on too vigorous a walk during the heat of the day. Stay on the lookout for:

Excessive panting and drooling
Dry or sticky gums
Abnormal gum color or bruising in gums
Lethargy
Disorientation
Seizures

Make sure your pet has some shade to rest in and plenty of fresh water. Be sure to leave an inch of fur when shaving to prevent sunburn.

In the event you suspect heat exhaustion in your pet, immediately find a cooler, shady place. Pour cool (not cold) water over your dog’s head and body and contact us (or an emergency clinic) ASAP! As always, please reach out if you have any questions

Hi Friends and Family!

In observation of Independence Day we will be closed Thursday, July 4th and open on the 5th for tech appointments only. Also, if your pet friend has noise anxiety and you are interested in helping them through the fireworks we can help! Call or text us at 618-524-7500 for information on medications to soothe their fears.

Have a happy (and safe!) 4th of July!

Please make sure your cats are on flea and tick prevention. We have Catago and Seresto collars if your cats haven’t been in for their annual visit or revolution plus if your cats have been seen in the past year. Even if your cat doesn’t go outside it is important to treat them because you or your other pets do and it is so easy to bring ticks inside!

We have recently had seen a few cases of Bobcat Fever within a month. We wanted everyone to be aware that Bobcat fever is still around and that there are preventions. This is a life-threatening tick-borne disease that is often fatal.

What is Bobcat Fever?
-Bobcat Fever is a blood parasite that is passed around through tick bites.

What are symptoms of Bobcat Fever?
-Lethargy
-Decreased Appetite
-High fever
-Pale Gums
-Jaundice

How long does it take for symptoms to appear?
-It can take as long as 2 weeks.

How to Prevent Bobcat Fever?
-Flea and Tick prevention is the best option! We recommend Seresto, Catego, and Revolution Plus.
