Doggie body language tells you much about Fido and his moods. Same with Felix the cat and his moods. Take a moment to look at the chart below. We see many pets here that could be termed “aggressive “.
Most aggression stems from fear. We’re kind of a scary place really. Think about it . Usually when a pet goes to the vet they are getting poked for wellness visits or they don’t feel well and are being poked for other reasons. There’s stress and smells , weird sounds and several strangers up in their bubble and occasionally thermometers up in their …. Ahem ..anyway …it would be almost like being abducted by aliens 👽.
Animals get stressed out and will attempt to bite , snap or claw. We’re not upset about it, it’s nothing personal towards us and we don’t take it that way.
Things happen and we have ways of caring for fear aggressive animals that help make the visit smoother. So when you call our office for an appointment just let us know that Vito the cat can be spicy or Lucy the Lhasa hates those shots. We can make the most of these visits much quicker and safer for everyone involved. We’re here to help you the clients and our animal buddies!

Obedient dogs are wonderful. Obedience is not learning “tricks” , it’s literally teaching a dog to understand the human’s wants and needs in certain situations. Obedience training is important because it helps establish a clear communication channel between you and your dog, preventing behavioral issues, promoting socialization, building a stronger bond, and ensuring your dog understands basic commands, ultimately leading to a well-behaved and happy pet in various situations.
Key benefits of obedience training:
*Preventative measure:
Teaches your dog appropriate behaviors early on, reducing the likelihood of developing problematic habits later.
*Improved communication:
By learning commands, your dog understands your expectations and can respond accordingly.
*Stronger bond:
Training sessions provide quality interaction, deepening the connection between you and your dog.
*Socialization skills:
Exposure to different people and environments during training helps your dog become comfortable in social situations.
*Mental stimulation:
Training engages your dog's mind, providing cognitive exercise and enhancing their mental well-being.
*Safety and control:
Basic commands like "come" and "stay" can be crucial in keeping your dog safe in different environments.
*Reduced anxiety:
A well-trained dog often feels more confident and less anxious in unfamiliar situations.

We can help with either suggestions, how to demonstrations or even training classes or professional trainers that are affordable.

What’s the three biggest medical challenges our pets face ?
* Issues bought on by obesity .
*Cancer
*Heart disease

We have (or will ) talked about the other two , but let’s focus on heart health.
In the early stages of heart disease, dogs or cats (yes cats can get heart disease! In fact some breeds are predisposed) may not show any signs, but a veterinarian may be able to hear a heart murmur during a physical exam.
Most types of heart disease can't be cured, but they can be managed with medication, nutrition, and lifestyle changes. A veterinarian can help create a treatment plan to improve your pet’s quality of life and length of life.
Herat disease can have a variety of symptoms, including:
*Breathing issues: Difficulty breathing, increased breathing rate, or coughing
*Exercise intolerance: Weakness, lethargy, or unwillingness to move
*Swelling: Abdominal swelling, or swelling in the legs
*Weight loss or gain: Sudden weight loss or gain, or reduced appetite
*Fainting or seizure like activity : Loss of consciousness due to lack of blood flow to the brain
*Skin and gums: Bluish tinge to skin and membranes, or blue-tinged or gray gums
*Other symptoms: Jaundice (yellowing of the eyes, skin, or membranes), coughing up blood or bloody mucous, diarrhea, or difficulty sleeping

The good news! With our cutting edge diagnostics we can use bloodwork and imaging in house to determine your pets Cardiac health!

The armored invasion of Missouri has begun.
This author remembers a time 25 years ago when conservation declared Armadillos could not survive in Missouri. It was however only a month ago that one of our employees shared a video of one happily rooting around in her dirt floor shed.
Usually you won’t see these shelled critters. Only where they have been , rooting and digging for worms , grubs and other tidbits with sharp claws and snout.
And while they are kinda cute resist the urge to mess with them in any way . Besides being able to deliver nasty scratches and bites Nine-banded armadillos are the only mammal other than humans known to carry leprosy. In some areas, 15–20% of armadillos are estimated to carry the M. leprae bacteria that causes leprosy (you know …that with a little over 16% being the average across the board.
Use extreme caution if you absolutely must handle one of these guys always using gloves or better yet contact local conservation to help you if they become a nuisance.

It’s winter ! Time to be thinking about fleas , ticks and mosquitoes!!😃
What?!? You say … but it’s winter …and we’re about to head into bitter cold !
Yup we are . But when you go from negative 10 to 40 above that will feel like a heat wave to us! Did you know all of these critters will think so too? Mosquitoes , fleas and ticks come out and are looking for meals anywhere from 40-50 degrees above zero, and while those aren’t the preferred temperatures nature kicks in and tells them to get moving and find a host. We get those temps in winter time here.
And then there are fleas that happily sneak into our homes. If your dog or cat has fleas in winter inside you can bet that they are in the environment of your house. The cheapest way to solve this issue is to keep your pets on preventative medications all year around.
Secondary infections from flea bites and scratching on your pet will require a visit to the vet.
Heartworm treatments after the fact are hugely expensive and time consuming. We always see multiple heartworm positive dogs in clinic every year . No telling how many others are out there that we DONT see.
Tick Bourne illnesses require bloodwork to diagnose and can be life threatening.

So you see an ounce of prevention is worth tons of cures !

It was always accepted that heavy dogs had a shorter lifespan than lean dogs, usually by 6-12 months. But a large entire span of life study found that being even moderately overweight can reduce a dog's life expectancy by nearly two years compared to their leaner counterparts. This is a sobering statistic.
And that shortened life isn’t just the issue. A dog’s quality of life can be greatly affected also leading to joint pain, lameness, diseases like diabetes and cardiac issues, UTI, and a**l gland problems and certain types of cancer.

But if that isn’t bad enough the statistics for cats is worse!

Obese cats have an average life expectancy of 5–10 years, which is 5 years shorter than the typical 10–15-year lifespan of healthy cats.

Obese cats between the ages of 8–12 have over a 2-fold increased mortality rate compared to lean cats.
Obesity increases the risk of developing many diseases, including diabetes, osteoarthritis, back pain, urinary disorders, breathing difficulties, heart problems, and cancer in cats lowering the quality of life.

Our neighbor the Illinois Department of Natural Resources is monitoring a large event of waterfowl (ducks, geese, cranes etc) at numerous locations throughout Illinois. Test results received so far indicate highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is the cause. Things like these travel quickly as the birds migrate over large distances and come into contact with other species across the US.
Some tips for the “just in case”.

-Do not handle or attempt to capture waterfowl or other wild birds displaying signs of illness. It cannot be stressed enough to leave any sick or injured animals alone. This disease is transmissible to humans .

-There are instances of cats coming down with this disease from catching and eating infected birds, so if a feral cat has symptoms of respiratory illness call the office for information.

-Report concentrations of five or more deceased birds found at one location to your local game warden.

-Do not send or bring dying or dead birds to veterinarians, wildlife refuges, etc., for testing. Instead, notify your local health department or conservation agency.

A quick information post about over the counter (OTC) human pain medications and our pets.

Believe it or not the OTC pain medications 💊 that we humans have used for decades are not at all safe for our pets. In fact things like Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Tylenol (Acetaminophen), Aleve,Advil, Motrin, Pamprin or Midol are not to be given to dogs and cats. Even small amounts can be deadly causing Kidney failure and GI bleeds.
Contact our office for much safer options. Our vets will evaluate the cause of your pets pain, form a plan and we have options that will fit into most budgets to help get your pet back on track.
