With heat waves sweeping across the country, blue-green algae is appearing in new areas and posing an increased risk to pets.

Found in lakes, ponds or any source of standing water, it’s extremely toxic and consuming it can be fatal. The best way to prevent accidental poisoning is to keep a close eye on pets when they’re around water.

If you think your pet has been exposed, take them to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital and contact the ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435.

DID YOU KNOW... In most situations, your pet is taken to the back for additional equipment, team members, and extra space needed to give your pet their treatment during your visits. The back room is also filled with more advanced medical equipment – like an x-ray and surgery suite, anesthesia machines, dental machine, and specialized tables and lights to help veterinarians get the best look at what’s going on with your pet.

Veterinary practices place a strong emphasis on minimizing stress in their patients. Having extra staff around to lend a hand allows treatment to be performed efficiently while your pet is offered treats, pets, and verbal comfort.

For more information check out this informative blog article from one of our partners Zoetis!

Chances are your pet has been taken to the “back room” at the vet for one reason or another. The back room might be mysterious, but it’s not scary!

Based on a contract recently awarded by the Massachusetts State Police, K-9 officers now receive high-quality care at VCA locations across the state -- while "Nero's Law," drafted by Dr. Kevin Smith of VCA Hyannis Animal Hospital to remove legal barriers to life-saving K-9 emergency care, moves closer to becoming state law.

Here's the remarkable story: https://vca.mobi/k9nero
