Horse Country Miami-Dade County Florida

Horse Country Miami-Dade County Florida The first real challenge to our area was in 1975. The owner of a lot on 43rd street and 127th Avenue requested a variance to put in a strip shopping center.

He got his neighbor to agree to sell also if the variance was granted. Marian Bonsignore recognized what a serious threat this zoning change would be to Horse Country. She went door to door to get people to go downtown to oppose the change. She got so many people together that the variance was denied. The people that joined in that protest became the charter members of our association. In the begi

nning Marian did it all: she went door to door to recruit new members and to collect dues; she notified everyone when there was a hearing and led groups downtown. When Marian moved out of the area she recruited Barbara Musgrove to take over. Barbara like Marian did it all. Barbara was followed by Linda Varner, Ron Weeks, Tom Worrell and most recently Manny Gomez. We wish we could recognize all of the many many people that have donated hundreds of hours, a lot of money and their heart and soul to preserve this unique area because we owe each of them a debt of gratitude!

Last week, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit blocked the Fearless Fund from investing in Black female entrepreneurs, on the grounds that it is racially exclusionary and thus likely violates federal law. A decision like this has massive consequences.

In light of this week’s decision, it just got even harder for institutions trying to address racial inequity. For those looking for solutions, our blog shares four actions to consider: https://miamifoundation.org/blog/4-steps-toward-racial-equity-after-the-fearless-fund/

Merlot with HalfMoon & DarkMoon
Fascinating. For those following along Merlot's journey... you may remember that in 2015 he successfully extracted a coal-black young mare known as Darkmoon and her yearling at the time, Eclipse. In 2016 Darkmoon had Merlot's first known foal, MoonDancer (bottom photo). The bait trap gather of 2016 captured the mare and foal and they went to good homes.

Merlot’s attention by 2018 turned to a look-alike striking deep black mare- Halfmoon in the FourSocks/Benson band. Enamored and focused on her, he took didn’t take No for an answer from the band stallions and stayed with the band, eventually becoming a micro band, later to successfully extracted her and they became their own band. HalfMoon had little c**t Firefly. Merlot and HalfMoon are still on the range, with others in the band, including offspring. Firefly was captured in 2022 and adopted to a great home (see him in a video I shared this am).

Keep in mind, besides being look-alike solid black mares, they also have similar names - total coincidence - how fun is that? Look-alike solid black mares for Merlot - coincidence?

You just can't make this stuff up, bc as we all well know by now, time tells the best stories.

Keep the WILD in our WEST,
Mustang Meg
