💔 In Memory of baby Blue
I’ve been processing since yesterday—our sweet Baby Blue didn’t make it.
When MDAS sent out a rescue blast for him on Saturday, Blue was still eating, drinking, bright and alert. He still had fight in him. But with a disease like parvo, time is everything—and sadly, time is what he didn’t have.
By the time we scrambled and pulled him on Tuesday, it was already too late. Rescues like ours want to say “yes” right away, but the heartbreaking truth is that without the financial cushion to cover emergency medical care, we can’t always move as quickly as these dogs need us to. And in situations like parvo, hours matter.
The truth is, we’re not alone. Many rescues are hanging on by a thread—begging for donations, fosters, and making impossible choices about which lives we can save. And when the system is this strained, dogs like Blue fall through the cracks.
But this tragedy was also preventable. A $15 parvo vaccine could have saved Blue’s life. His suffering is not just a “rescue problem”—it’s a society problem. We must do better:
✅ Educate pet owners on basic care and vaccinations.
✅ Speak up against irresponsible ownership—firmly but respectfully.
✅ Stop supporting backyard breeders. Buying “just to save” only fuels their cycle of neglect.
✅ Support rescues consistently, not just in emergencies. Stable donations and more foster homes mean we can say “yes” faster next time.
MDAS gave Blue the best care they possibly could—IV fluids, a feeding tube, constant monitoring; daily email pleas for a rescue to take Blue. The moment we said ‘yes’ to Blue, MDAS immediately transported him to Town & Country Animal Hospital for us. But the system is overwhelmed, and so are the rescues trying to help.
Today, I’m left carrying the weight of not being able to get to Blue in time. But the true burden should rest on those who failed him first—his breeder or owner who never vaccinated him, who never protected him.
Blue deserved so much better. Let’s honor him by making sure fewer dogs share his fate.
Rest easy, baby Blue. You mattered. 💙
