Does Cold Weather Affect Insects?

Whenever we experience cold temperatures locally, people ask if the cold weather will kill off the bugs for the upcoming season. While this may seem like a reasonable assumption, insects deal with cold weather in various ways.

Many of them migrate to warmer climates to escape the cold. Some insects develop a tolerance to cold with a natural antifreeze that prevents them from freezing solid. Other insects survive as eggs, larvae or adults protected below ground or under leaf litter. And of course, there are those that find a warm, welcoming environment inside our homes and other heated structures. The brown marmorated stink bug is just one type of insect you may see in your home during the bitter cold temperatures.

Cold weather may reduce some insect populations, but the remaining insects are capable of producing hundreds of eggs, which allow the populations to rebound as warmer weather returns. The bottom line? They'll be back this year - don't forget to schedule your spring Perimeter Pest Control treatment!
