At Pets In Stitches, we pride ourselves on practicing low-stress handling, which creates a calmer, more pleasant visit for your pet.

That means we treat each pet as an individual, monitoring their emotions and body language and adjusting our approach accordingly. We also use calming pheromones and keep cats and dogs in separate sections to minimize fear.

To learn more about our approach to low-stress handling, visit our blog.

With low stress handling of our patients, each pet receives individualized treatment. The Pets In Stitches team has an extensive understanding of body language interpretation to help your pet feel safe and secure.

Your pet can't talk to you, but they have plenty of ways to communicate. Watch for two key signs that they're experiencing pain:

• Limping: If you notice your pet favoring a leg or paw, they may have pulled a muscle, stepped on something sharp, or are having a flare-up of an underlying condition like arthritis. Ouch!

• Licking: If your pet is licking one spot repeatedly, they may be trying to alleviate pain. In time, this licking can lead to "hot spots," or sores that can cause even more discomfort.

If you notice either of these signs, or other unusual behavior from your pet, contact your vet to pinpoint the underlying cause.

You probably know that spaying and neutering your pets is important, but did you also know these routine procedures are associated with several health benefits?

For female pets, spaying reduces the likelihood of uterine infection and breast cancer, and reduces behavioral symptoms linked to mating cycles.

For male pets, neutering eliminates the risk of testicular cancer and reduces territorial behavior like roaming and marking.

Bentley Turner, Pepper, Maya, and Luna are just a few of the pets we've spayed or neutered recently.

Does your pet's breath stink? They can't help it, but you can. Here are a few ways to care for your canine's canines.

Regular Brushing — Brushing helps remove plaque and preserve your pet's teeth. Just make sure to use a toothpaste formulated for animals, because fluoride and other toothpaste ingredients can be harmful to pets.

Dental Treats — In between brushings, specially designed dental chews can reduce the buildup of plaque—and provide enrichment for your pet!

Vet Visits — Regular vet visits can identify dental issues early. If needed, your vet can also conduct a deep cleaning to ensure dental health.

The dog days of summer are upon us, and temperatures are soaring. 📈 🌞 Here are a few ways you can keep your pets safe on hot days:

» Watch humidity levels: Extra-humid days make it harder for cats and dogs to regulate their body temperature.

» Limit physical activity: Plan games of fetch and walks outside during mornings and evenings to avoid peak heat times.

» Avoid asphalt: If you do have to walk your dog while the sun is at its brightest, avoid paved surfaces that can burn paw pads and raise your pup's body temperature.

» Provide water and shade: If your pet likes to spend time in the yard, make sure they have ample sources of shade and plenty of water to beat the heat.

For many pets, the Fourth of July is a stressful day when the sky suddenly fills with flashing lights and loud booms. 🎇 To keep your pet calm and safe during the festivities, try these strategies:

» Update identification tags if needed. In the event that your pet runs away, proper tags can help get them back to you.

» Keep your pets inside, ideally in a cool, dark space where the sound of fireworks will be dampened.

» For particularly anxious pets, consider options like calming vests, or talk to your vet about medications that can soothe their stress.

After Isis' visit, here's what her pet parent, Kristina, had to say in her 10/10 review: "I was so apprehensive to have my Isis in to spay. From the moment I walked into the office, I could hear the doctors in the back room working with another cat. You could tell the poor thing wasn’t happy not being home, but the doctors spoke so kindly to calm the cat and even used cute little names instead of being upset and using harsh words. So I knew that Isis was in good hands. They promptly called me as soon as Isis was out of surgery to give an update and to let me know that I could pick her up at any time."

By now, your lawn is probably looking lush, and you may have noticed your dog eating grass.

Here's a few reasons they might be grazing:
🌱 A diet without enough fiber or vitamins and minerals may lead to increased grazing.
🌱 If your dog is spending a lot of time in the backyard alone, they may be eating grass out of boredom.
🌱 Some dogs just like the taste of grass and enjoy eating it.
🌱 Dogs may eat grass when their digestive system is upset.

If you notice your dog frequently eating grass and vomiting afterward, it's time to call your vet. They could be dealing with an issue like gastroenteritis.
