Last weekend, I took in a possibly pregnant 2 time momma pig and one of her pups from the latest litter. It was kind of an emergency situation. I thought the pup I brought with momma was a female, based off pictures, but when I checked for myself I found the baby to be a boy. A previous adopter recently contacted me and asked if I could get ahold of him if I ever had any babies come in so he could add a baby to his bonded pair of boys. When it was discovered the baby I brought with momma was a boy, I contacted the previous adopter right away, as I had to get momma away from any and all boys asap. The baby got adopted several days ago and I got an update of how he is doing with his new friends. Here's a pic of him during introductions. He's one of the piggies snuggled up in the sleep sack 🥰

Alfred and Conway are 2 bonded males, ages unknown. Alfred, who is on the right, is very out going and loves to be petted when he comes to the edge of the cage. The way his hair looks kind of "slicked back" (not very noticeable in pics) makes him look like he drives a bad ass muscle car and keeps his ciggies rolled up in his tee shirt sleeve 😂 I think I'm showing my age, here....lol. Conway is a lot more reserved, but he is definitely coming out of his shell more and more each day. Alfred and Conway will need a minimum 2x4 C&C cage to be adopted.

I'm a couple days late posting this, but I'm sending a HUGE "Thank you" to those who donated when my bank account was drained by fraudulent charges. I was able to get 2 50 pound boxes of hay and 2 25 pound bags of pellets. 😊😘

Hello all! Asking for donations is something I try to avoid, but unfortunately someone breached my debit card and got me for quite a bit of money. Anyone who has dealt with fraud knows it takes quite some time for it to get sorted out. I'll need to purchase hay and pellets in the next day or so. Hay is $80 for a 50 pound box from Chewy and pellets are $40 for a 25 pound bag at Jake's Feed and Garden in Valparaiso. Here's the link for donating. Theodore (aka Teddy) and Simon came to the rescue separately but have been best buddies ever since their arrival. Theodore is quite the outgoing piggy, loving head scratches and any attention he can get. Simon is more reserved but doesn't mind being held and loved on. Simon is the piggy with more white fur and Theodore is a Teddy breed, having coarse fur. Theodore and Simon will need a minimum of 2x4 C&C cage in their forever home.

Rowan and Maggie are both just over 2 years old. Rowan is a neutered male, so that's why he is allowed to have a girlfriend 😊 Both piggies are super sweet, but Maggie is especially outgoing and lovable. Rowan and Maggie would make awesome family pets, as they are very easy to handle.

Remember the baby piggy who went to live with a long time supporter until we could 100% determine his or her gender? Well, things went so well with her spayed female, Blanche, that the family decided to adopt the baby!! Congrats to baby pig, Blanche, Sue, and family. 🥳

Earlier this week it was time to prepare to move the baby boys away from mom. For those who don't know, baby boys can impregnate their own mother as early as 3 weeks old. Unfortunately, it is often difficult to tell the genders of baby guinea pigs that early. I took the babies (and mom, for emotional support) to the vet and they concluded there was 1 boy and 2 girls. When I got home, I checked again and wasn't completely convinced one of the girls was actually a girl. I didn't want to leave the poor piggy all alone, but also didn't want to leave him/her with mom, just in case it's a boy. I was so lucky to have a long time supporter of the rescue, Sue, step up and volunteer to take the little piggy in and put with one of her spayed females until we can be 100% certain of the gender. She gave the baby a stuffed dinosaur to snuggle with and currently has a separated cage with the baby on one side and Blanche on the other, while they meet. They're doing well with getting to know each other and the divider will come out tonight or tomorrow.

Shared, with permission from this amazing rescue. The person who runs it really found the words so many of us rescuers struggle to find.

If you come into the rescue to enthuse about your home and garage full of guinea pigs that you breed, show and sell, I am not going to be able to hide my disappointment well. I will not smile and tell you “that’s awesome,” or pretend we have something in common because we don’t. One of us is contributing to a problem the other is dedicating their life to solve. I will wonder how many of your piggies I’ve taken in and brought back from the brink. I will wonder how many have passed from the cold, like Scout almost did. I will tell you that we have 500 guinea pigs waiting to be surrendered to our facility, and we have 30+ in our program at all times. I will ask you if you also walk into cat and dog rescues, where animals are euthanized daily, to tell them about your garage full of animals you are breeding.
This rescue has made my skin 10x thicker and my backbone 100x stronger. This type of interaction feels disrespectful to our work. If you are breeding, I ask with all my heart that you please reconsider. If you love guinea pigs, get involved in a rescue. West Michigan Critter Haven and Furget Us Not Rescue are foster based and can only help as many animals as they have foster homes for. Animal shelters and humane societies are turning away neglected piggies daily because they do not have the means to help. It is an absolute crisis and animals are dying. Please, I am begging you, stop adding to the problem. Stop hurting animals when there are so many opportunities to help them, instead.

Reintroducing Tina, Katrina, and Selena! These 3 gorgeous piggies were returned to the rescue after their family experienced a job loss. They brought along their friend Gina. Gina is only several months old. She loves doing zoomies in the cage and has the CUTEST little hairs that stand up near her bum. I would really like to keep these 4 together, if possible. They will need a 2x5 or larger C&C cage. Photos required a little bribery. I don't know how some rescues can get 4+ guinea pigs to sit still and face forward for a good pic. 😅

Meet Rick and Morty! These cuties are between a year, and 2 years old. Rick (brown and black) is the calmer of the 2, and he sports a spike of hair down his back. I believe he might be a razorback guinea pig. Morty is a little more apprehensive about being picked up, but once he's "caught" he realizes cuddles are a good thing. These boys will need a 2x4 minimum C&C cage for adoption.

An update on my kitty, Biscuit. She had surgery yesterday to remove the blockage that caused her to have liver issues. What was that blockage, you ask.....none other than a huge ball of hay. She is a hay eating fool. She runs when I catch her with a piece and hides where I can't reach her. She's not out of the woods, yet. It will be touch and go for a couple weeks, but she did eat on her own this morning, which is pretty big. She will probably come home tomorrow, but in the meantime, I'll be rearranging the rescue and making it to where she won't have access to any hay, since she is obviously too tempted by it. Thank you to those who donated so I can buy supplies for the rescue and I can focus my money on the several thousand dollars vet bill I now have. I will be ordering hay today and buying many bags of pellets from Jake's tomorrow.

Eric and Derrick are back at the rescue after previously being adopted. I don't recall their ages, but I'm estimating them to be about 3 years old. They are both very laid back piggies and do well with being handled. Derrick wants to be the coolest pig out there with his little mohawk.

Last week we were asked to take at least 60 rabbits from an unfortunate situation in Alabama. In this case a paramedic responded to a call for help and when they arrived the house was overrun with rabbits. The owner of the rabbits needed medical attention and also asked for help getting rid of all the rabbits. There were no agencies willing or able to help so this kind paramedic took on the care of all of these rabbits himself.

He has done the best he can. They have a outdoor enclosure that's about as safe as an outdoor enclosure can get and he worked hard to keep them cool with fans during the record breaking highs last week. But he needs help.

We have basically spent the last week reaching out to corporations asking for help as an intake this size will cost an average of $200 per rabbit. That's $12,000 if there are only 60 rabbits and they don't keep reproducing. Some amazing corporations including and have sent donations of food and bedding to help, but as far as funds go we just aren't there.

We are planning to rescue these rabbits on Wednesday night so that everyone can get indoors, get medical care, and stop reproducing. But we need your help. We can't do this alone. We need your donations, we need you to share, we need you to tag corporations and people you think might be able to help, and we need you to thank the corporations that have helped.

We need to get these bunnies to safety and we can't do it alone.

Cash and Dash were adopted by the most wonderful family today. One of the teens said the 25 minutes for me to arrive with the piggies was the LONGEST time of her entire life 🤣 Needless to say, the family is very excited about their new family members. Congrats, Cash and Dash.
