With the extreme heat it is important to keep your pets safe!
Dogs and cats don't sweat when they're hot, they pant.
Signs of heatstroke = rapid, raspy panting, drooling, vomiting, weakness, collapse and seizures.
It is our goal at Woodland Veterinary Center to provide the very best veterinary care to your pets as our patients. We have warm hearts for cold noses.

As mentioned in their post brachycephalic airway syndrome is a term that describes a set of anatomical features in a dog’s airway that cause increased resistance to movement of air. Brachycephalic refers to dogs with shortened skull features including a shortened snout (French bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers, English Bulldogs etc.).
Although they are adorable, the anatomy of their nose, airway and throat can pose significant problems with breathing, especially during activity or warm weather. Noticeable signs of dogs with an affected airway consist of snoring, gagging, snorting, sleep apnea, collapse, vomiting, regurgitation and difficulty exercising despite a willingness to exercise.
The reality is that it is never “normal” for any breed of dog to have audible noises like snorting/gagging when doing a simple task such as short walks outside, vomiting/choking after eating/drinking or snoring very loud.
Fortunately, options do exist to help improve the quality of life for these animals if their signs are recognized and addressed appropriately.
Give our office a call at 219-879-0249 to setup a consultation!

🐾Avoid hot surfaces: Walk your dog on cooler surfaces such as grass or shaded areas. Avoid walking on hot pavement or concrete during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you can’t avoid hot surfaces when walking your dog, give them an extra layer of protection by applying paw wax or balm to prevent burns.
🐾Time your walks: Take your dog for walks in the cooler parts of the day, such as early mornings or late evenings. This way, you can avoid exposing your dog's paws to the scorching heat. This is especially important when walking on asphalt or pavement.
🐾Protect your dog's paws: Consider buying protective dog booties or shoes to shield your dog's paws from the hot pavement. Dog booties can provide a layer of protection and make walking more comfortable for your dog. They can also make a bold fashion statement so you your pup can stroll confidently.
Remember, it's essential to take precautions to prevent your dog's paws from getting burned on hot pavement during summer months. By following these simple steps, you can ensure that your furry friend's paws remain healthy and pain-free. For more tips on keeping your pup’s paws safe during summer, check out the infographic below.
WHAT IS IT?!
Dr. Baldwin performed surgery on a patient who ate something he should not have.
Any guesses on what it might be??
"Ticks the Season". Today little Cutie came in for her annual visit. Her owner noticed a tick under her chin and needed help removing it. The tick was successfully removed with a Tick Twister. She was so brave. Cutie's mom also picked up Nexgard Combo to help with preventing the pesky ticks from attaching to Cutie again.

This week is #Nationalvettechweek Woodland Veterinary Center is privileged to have a wonderful Registered Veterinary Technician and this week we celebrate our hard-working Registered Veterinary Technician. Jackie has earned her Associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology and has worked hard to pass her licensing examination to be considered Registered Veterinary Technician. Registered Veterinary Technicians are our laboratory technicians, radiology technicians, surgery technicians, anesthesiologists, phlebotomists, pharmacy technicians, oral hygienists, and so much more. They are your pet’s advocate and your therapist. They laugh with you, cry with you and love your pet’s as if they were theirs. We couldn’t do it without them!
**WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT** Today is World Spay Day! Spaying your pet eliminates uterine infections (pyometra). A pyometra is a life-threatening condition where the uterus fills up with pus and can even “explode” inside the abdomen (belly). Pyometra is a secondary infection that occurs as a result of hormonal changes in the female's reproductive tract. Following estrus (heat), the hormone progesterone remains elevated for up to two months and causes the lining of the uterus to thicken in preparation for pregnancy. The chance of successful resolution without surgery or prostaglandin treatment is extremely low. If treatment is not performed quickly, the toxic effects from the bacteria will be fatal in many cases. If the cervix is closed, it is possible for the uterus to rupture, spilling the infection into the abdominal cavity. This will also be fatal. Pyometra is a serious medical condition that requires prompt treatment.
Trivia time! Which parasite is found in this video? A. Roundworm B. Heartworm C. Tapeworm D. Hookworm Hint: Found in the blood ANSWER: Heartworm Take a guess in the comment section below!
Lice are small, flightless insects that live in the hair or feathers of animals and people. Most lice are of the biting or chewing type. Lice live within the environment provided by skin and hair. They move from host to host by direct contact. In temperate regions, lice are most common during the colder months and hard to find in the summer. Most chewing lice have definite preferences as to their hosts: they will often live on only one species or several closely related species. #parasites #vetmed #veterinarian #lice #medvet #veterinarymedicine
Here at the Animal Clinic, we are proud to offer veterinary cold laser therapy. Cold laser therapy is used to stimulate cells to heal themselves and also grow, to change and survive. It can be used on conditions such as sprains, strains, acute and chronic pain, kidney disease, arthritis, post-surgery recovery and more! It can also be used with current medications or to try to reduce pain and inflammation without the assistance of prescription medications. This video shown is progress of a dog being treated by veterinary cold laser therapy for a sudden onset episode of paralysis and ataxia.
It is flea and tick season again! It is very important to keep all of your pets on a flea and tick prevention even if they are strictly indoors! This video is of a cat who had stayed inside for 13 years. Your pet may not go outside but fleas can still get into your house by hitching a ride on your clothing, other people or other animals. Having dogs and cats without year-round protection from fleas can lead to infestations of not only your pets, but your home as well. A female flea can lay 20-50 eggs a day and more than 2,000 over a lifetime. **It is best to consult with your veterinarian to discuss which flea and tick prevention is best for your pet**
Everyone meet Louise! Louise has a condition that caused her to lose function of her back legs. Dr. Baldwin is currently treating her with acupuncture, adjustments, and laser therapies. Dr. Baldwin referred her to Paws in Motion for a wheelchair to help her move around. As you can see she loves it!
