REACTIVITY MISUNDERSTOOD
Reactive dogs are often misunderstood. A dog that is reacting to a situation is not trying to be difficult, they are having a difficult time coping with that particular situation and are trying their best to make the scary thing go away.
Reactivity is generally triggered by the emotion of fear. The fear of whatever is scaring them, a fear of a valuable possession being taken away or a fear of a strange person or animal coming into their territory. Anxiety, stress, over excitement, over stimulation, feeling overwhelmed, trigger stacking, or a dog that is tired, in pain or even has chronic itching will often feel irritable and may be reactive in certain situations. If their reactivity is successful in making the scary thing go away, it becomes a rewarding behaviour because it’s something that works for them and it makes them feel better.
It’s not easy to be the owner of a reactive dog. One of my dogs is reactive and I know first-hand how dogs like this can leave you feeling embarrassed, ashamed, angry or frustrated. Why do they have to be so difficult, why can’t they just behave normally? Everyone is looking at me, judging me, thinking that I’m a bad owner, have no training skills, can’t control my dog or have a vicious dog that shouldn’t be taken out in public.
As hard as it may be, we need to take the focus off how we as owners feel about their reactivity and focus on how our dogs are feeling and what is causing their reaction. Whatever it is, it’s not something our dogs can overcome on their own and we need to take steps to help them cope. Reactive dogs need compassion, understanding, management, force free, positive reinforcement interventions and decompression – (a return to a normal, more relaxed state after a period of intense stress, psychological pressure, or urgent activity). These techniques take time and patience but are so important in helping our dogs to feel safe and learn more acceptable ways of coping.
I have learnt through many mistakes, to recognise what triggers my reactive dog and take steps to either avoid those situations, provide enough distance, or provide her with an alternative choice where she feels safe and in control of her environment. There will always be unexpected triggers around the next corner that are not within our control, but doing all we can to manage these triggers has immeasurable benefits.

Inspirational Sunday.

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead.
He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.
After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight.
When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.
When he was close enough, he called out, 'Excuse me, where are we?'
'This is Heaven, sir,' the man answered.
Would you happen to have some water?' the man asked.
Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up'.
The man gestured, and the gate began to open.
'Can my friend,' gesturing toward his dog, 'come in, too?' the traveler asked.

'I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets.'
The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog.
After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.
'Excuse me!' he called to the man. 'Do you have any water?'
'Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in..'
'How about my friend here?' the traveler gestured to the dog.
There should be a bowl by the pump.'
They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.
The traveler filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog.
When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree.
'What do you call this place?' the traveler asked.
This is Heaven,' he answered.
'Well, that's confusing,' the traveler said. 'The man down the road said that was Heaven, too.'
'Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell.'
'Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?'
'No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind

Please remember.....

Pets need to be indoors and safe as we see an increase in fireworks.

Always have them on a leash and never take to fireworks displays.

I personally see a 50% increase in lost pets over the next week.

Also....remember so many others are impacted by Fireworks....especially our Veterans.

No truer words!!!
Don't get a dog.
You will bring home a puppy, and be up all night with her crying. Not only that, she doesn't know not to p*e in the house. Your kids will be so distracted, you won't be able to get them to do the things they need to do.
Don't get a dog.
First thing you know, you will be talking baby talk to an animal, and getting excited that they are finally not p*eing in the house. You will go to the store and buy all kinds of silly toys for the dog. You will buy a book on dog training, and never take the advice. You will worry about the food you feed them, and if their collar is too small, and if they have had all of their shots. You will start conversations with perfect strangers, that start with "I just got a puppy..."
Don't get a dog.
I am telling you, it will be hard to get stuff done when all you do is throw a ball, take them for walks, post pictures on social media. Your friends will talk about their dog, and you will think unkind thoughts about how your dog is so much better than theirs. Of course, you'll know that your dog is smarter, cuter, sweeter and better behaved, and that isn't polite.
Don't get a dog.
Consider how this willi impact vacations, and your budget. You'll look for pet friendly accommodations and plan your trip around your dog. Your kids won't mind, but don't think it will be totally relaxing. Of course, you will run into other dog people and end up in conversation, and it is time consuming. Then there are the home improvements. Fences. Dog doors. Dog beds. Dog blankets. The list is endless, and the repairs and replacement plentiful. Weirdly, you'll find you don't mind.
Don't get a dog.
They will follow you around and stay under your feet. They will look at you with those puppy eyes until you give them a treat. They will lay on your furniture, and climb in your lap and generally be a nuisance. If someone they don't recognize comes around, they will bark like crazy and act like a guard dog. They will want you to pay attention to them 24/7. You cannot escape, even for a minute. They are nosy! You won't be able to open a car door or a grocery sack without them insisting on finding out what is inside.
Don't get a dog.
Because if you don't already have it, you will find religeon. You will ponder Who could create such an amazing animal. You will be on your knees begging Him for healing if this dog gets sick or hurt. . You will find yourself thanking God Almighty when your dog recovers. You might find yourself including them in your prayers.
Don't get a dog.
When the dog gets older and slower, you will think they are even better. You will do anything, and purchase anything to make their life easier. You will have the vet on sp*ed dial. You will make all kinds of allowances for this dog. You will get that awful feeling when you consider life without them and tear up thinking about it.
Don't get a dog.
When the day comes that the dog lets you know that it is time to leave you, your heart will literally break. You'll cry and rant and grieve, but you'll make the best decision for them. You will tell them how much you love them and that you will see them again one day. You will hold them one last time and kiss their head and tell them that that they are a good dog. Your house will feel empty and your kids will cry and you will wonder how the time went so darn fast. You will have all those memories and your heart will break even more. It will take a long time to accept that you don't have a doggy shadow, and that the noise you just heard isn't your dog. You will wish for a way to turn back time and do it all over again.
Dont...
Listen to any of this.
Go get a dog.

“Pets, it turns out, also have last wishes before they die, but only known by veterinarians who put old and sick animals to sleep. Twitter user Jesse Dietrich asked a vet what was the most difficult part of his job.

The specialist answered without hesitation that it was the hardest for him to see how old or sick animals look for their owners with the eyes of their owners before going to sleep. The fact is that 90 % of owners don't want to be in a room with a dying animal. People leave so that they don't see their pet leave. But they don't realize that it's in these last moments of life that their pet needs them most.

Veterinarians ask the owners to be close to the animals until the very end. ′′It's inevitable that they die before you. Don't forget that you were the center of their life. Maybe they were just a part of you. But they are also your family. No matter how hard it is, don't leave them.

Dont let them die in a room with a stranger in a place they dont like. It is very painful for veterinarians to see how pets cannot find their owner during the last minutes of their life. They dont understand why the owner left them. After all, they needed their owner’s consolation.

Veterinarians do everything possible to ensure that animals are not so scared, but they are completely strangers to them. Don't be a coward because it's too painful for you. Think about the pet. Endure this pain for the sake of their sake. Be with them until the end.”

At 7am on Thursday morning, Baltimore resident Mike P. was awoken by a strange yowling sound. When he looked out his bedroom window, he saw a broken down car parked outside with its hood open. He waited a moment, and then, the howling began again. It occurred to Mike that the noise was coming from the car.

Mike quickly went outside to help. The driver of the vehicle had been driving for at least 10 minutes before realizing that an odd sound was coming from his engine. After some investigation, they found that a cat was stuck in the engine compartment. The cat was firmly stuck, howling continually from the heat and pain of his terrible situation.

Both Mike and the driver leapt into action. They called emergency services, and Mike ran inside to get tools and a hydraulic jack. Unfortunately, the cat could not be removed without the assistance of the fire department and Baltimore City Animal Control. After they arrived, it took over an hour to free the cat–with all hands on deck.

Pattycake, as we named him, had burns covering his underside and ulcerations on all four paw pads. His skin was p*eling and his fur was covered in soot; he even had soot in his mouth. Our skilled and caring veterinary team began treating his pain and wounds immediately upon his arrival to our shelter.

It’s been a few days and Pattycake’s paws are already looking better, but it may be a bit before he feels back to his old self. We are so thankful to wonderful and caring citizens like Mike P., the driver of the vehicle, BCFD, Animal Control and our Medical Care Fund donors, each of whom played a critical role in saving Pattycake’s life. As for Pattycake’s family, he did have a microchip, but it hasn’t yet led us to an owner. So, if he looks familiar or you have any information about his potential owners, please get in contact with us! The rescue happened in the Reservoir Hill neighborhood of the city.
