VETERANS DAY

Veterans Day on November 11th honors military veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces. The federal holiday coincides with Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which marks World War I. These observances reflect the end of significant hostilities at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany took effect. Initially, the United States observed Armistice Day as well. However, it evolved into the current Veterans Day in 1954.

Pets come in all shapes and sizes, but sometimes sizes get a little out of hand. That’s why on October 9 we recognize National Pet Obesity Awareness Day to remind people to keep their pets healthy. When your pooch starts getting a little plump, you know it’s time for a few things . More walks, less table scraps, and perhaps even an additional visit to the vet to make sure they’re still healthy. While a rotund Rover can be a cute or funny sight, that extra layer for lovin’ can have some serious consequences. Thanks to National Pet Obesity Day, we can now all learn more about this problem among our beloved pets.

NATIONAL FIRE PUP DAY

National Fire Pup Day on October 1st recognizes the canine firefighters that have long been members of fire departments across the country.

While the Dalmatian's origin is unknown, their use in firehouses began during the 1700s. Trained as a carriage dog, the Dalmatian's agility transferred quickly to horse-drawn fire engines. Even though Dalmatians weren't the only dogs fit for carriage work, they were the ones who mostly filled the role of fire dogs. They were also easily identified by their spotted and speckled coats.

On September 28, NGOs, governments, and people from all over the world will unite to on World Rabies Day to spread awareness about the dangers of the disease, and how it can be stopped. The event, put on by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC), seeks to educate the public about how rabies can be eradicated in people and domestic animals if we take the appropriate steps. Around the world, dogs are the most common animal affected by rabies, with more than 99 percent of human cases coming from dog bites. GARC sponsors the event not only to raise awareness for one day, but with the hope that communities can put measures in place to help control the spread of rabies all year round.
