I got to trim three new clients today: Mocha, Napoleon and Irma. They were good fur-kids.

They had an interesting angle to all of their feet, where the one side of the hoof was taller than the other and the same side was taller on every foot. Little bit of thrush but it's been raining a lot. Also, had contracted heels on Napoleon, which can be fixed over time. Normal flaring and some wall breakage from being a little overdue for a trim. All around, not bad.

I finally got my recently feral filly trimmed. She has been so fearful of trimming that I had to wait until she and I had some trust built up to trim her. Her feet had very long toes. 😩 Lots of talking, pets and patience and she's done without any freaking out.

Good job, Firefly!

In my experience, trimming for proper frog pressure is the quickest way to improve total hoof health and improve sole thickness.

This horse was 18 when I pulled shoes. He was in them for 14 years. He's going on 20 years old by the 3rd photo. This, to me, is proof that the digital cushion can be improved under almost any circumstance if the live tissue is properly stimulated. The left photo was taken shortly after shoe removal. The middle photo is pre trim 18 months later. The right photo is post trim. Correct frog shape = correct pressure = improved sole depth...on any breed, at any age.

Joy's trim today. I have a pic of her front feet. The white one on the right has been trimmed and the black has not been trimmed yet. So much flaring but it's getting better.

Thinking about trimming weekly to improve her behavior and the flares.

Epic's trim today. I tried waiting until every 4 weeks instead of every 2 weeks and it wasn't good. He was favoring that club foot a little and had a lot of growth. Every 2 weeks, it is, little buddy. I did quick him a bit with that club foot but if you look, I think that he finally may have less disconnection between his hoof wall.. yay!!! He was very well-behaved today.

Trigger's trim. Little thrush. He's sensitive to his right front being picked. He seems a little hesitant to let me pick up his right rear as well. Treated the thrush, backed up his toes and treated one large flare on his right front. Good boy!

Brownie's trim. What a gentleman. His hooves are really dry from the lack of rain. We worked on getting that long toe under control. He looks a lot more comfortable. Still working on thrush. His hoof wall looks tighter and stronger than before.

Epic's second trim with me. Why so soon? Since he has a club foot and some weird bars and overgrowth, I wanted to try to help him a little at a time to try to keep him comfortable. Thrush is looking better. Club foot has improved some. His behavior was still fearful but he's trying versus not trying at all. Good boy, Epic.

Epic's first trim with me. He has a lot of foot issues including thrush, which we've been treating and it looks a lot better than what it was. He also has a fear of his feet being handled. So we worked slow and patient on this to help him gain confidence. He has a lot of overgrowth from his fears not allowing for a good trim to happen. His right front foot is also a club foot. I did not take a lot of length off as I'd rather take small amounts more frequently to allow him time to adjust. I want him to be comfortable. Shout out to Epic being brave today!!

Breakover!!
02/09/2021

Breakover!!

What is breakover when talked about as a trimming landmark?

Breakover is trimmed at the forward most part of the hoof at the toe. It is the very last part of the hoof to be touching the ground as the horse breaks over and lifts the leg into the swing phase of the stride. It is usually trimmed as a bevel or roll into the hoof wall, but occasionally is trimmed back farther into the golden line or even the sole if the sole is very stretched forward.

How do you know where to set breakover?

There are a couple of ways. This picture shows the angle of new growth at the coronary band and if we were to follow it all the way down, breakover should be where the hoof wall would be if it were well connected. Follow the green line down and it shows the beginning of where I trimmed breakover in line with that upper growth.

Another way I determine breakover is by reading the sole’s concavity. Solar concavity mimics the coffin bone concavity, so following the concavity out until it plateaus is sometimes also an indicator of where breakover should be, but there are a few exceptions to this method. For instance a foundered horse will have very little to no concavity, and a horse with retained sole may not show the concavity properly.

In my opinion setting a proper breakover is probably the single most important part of the trim, and one of the main aspects of trimming that I find a lot of professionals get wrong.

This could be discussed in a video if there is interest, let me know!
