Did you know…If you are planning to bring your pet to the vet, there are a few things you should do.

Most pets do well going to the vet but there are some who don't. You can always let us know when making your appointment and we can talk to the Dr. about giving some medications to help, prior to them coming in.

If you have a cat, always bring them in a carrier. Bring the carrier out a few days before your vet appointment. Most cats hate the carrier and will run and hide when they see it. This makes it hard to catch them and be on time for your visit. You can place some yummy treats inside it and leave the door open for your cat to go in and out of. This will help when it’s time to get them into their carrier.

If you're coming in for your dogs annual, bring in a fresh stool sample. Your dog will appreciate it, trust us!

If your pet is having issues like limping, a cough, or breathing abnormally, take a video. So many times pets act like nothing is wrong when they are at the vet, so the Dr. doesn’t get to see what the pet is doing that is concerning you. If the pet is having multiple issues, write them all down so you don’t forget.

If you have a new pet to bring in that we haven’t seen, email all records, not just vaccine history, before the appointment. That way the you don’t forget them at home and their chart is ready for when you arrive.

If your pet is having urinary issues, DO NOT let them urinate before the appointment. We collect a urine sample to run a urinalysis.
If you have a male cat that is not urinating or urinating very small amounts, that is an EMERGENCY! Get them in right away or take them to the ER, DO NOT WAIT. Male cats can block and if not treated right away, it is fatal.

We hope this tips help, let us know if they did!

FRIENDLY REMINDER...
ALL medication refills needs to be called into our medication refill line 24 hours in advance as we have to review the pets chart and get doctor approval to refill it. We will send you a text when the medication is ready to be picked up. If you would like to email us regarding the refill you may do so. Only call or email regarding the medication one time so our in box is not over flowing.

Did you know…Once you have decided to add a pet to your family, it’s a life long and expensive commitment.
Don’t pick a pet based on how cute they are, trust us, we know it’s hard because they are all so adorable. Different breeds require different things. Do your research on which breed would be best for your life style.
Things to consider when choosing a pet…

Pets activity level- If you live in an apartment and work all the time, an active breed like Labs, German Short Hair Pointer, Husky & Boston Terriers would not be the best as they need extra physical exercise.

Grooming- All breeds require grooming. However, some breeds require routine professional grooming like any Doodle breed, Chows, Shih Tzu & Poms.

Breed Temperament- Certain breeds are more protective than others. Which is not always a good thing. Breeds like Belgian Malinois (Shepherd breeds), Cain Corso, & Cattle/Herding breeds (Aussies & Healers) require a strong assertive owner.

Hereditary Health Issues- Pretty much every breed has hereditary medical issues. Cavalier King Charles are known for bad hearts. Pit Bulls have skin issues. Small breeds like Yorkies & Chihuahuas have dental disease. Frenchies & Pugs have breathing issues. Golden Retrievers & Boxers are prone to cancer.

No matter what breed you decide is best for your family, always be sure to get a Health certificate on the pet. Any pet sold in the state of Florida is required to have a valid health certificate done by a Veterinarian. Florida Statutes Section 828.29

Did you know… that there are many different treatments for your pets arthritis pain?
If your pet is limping, having a hard time getting up and down or just not as mobile as they use to be, there is pain relief out there to help them.
Joint supplements like Movoflex which support healthy bones and joint flexibility in dogs.
NSAID’s like Galliprant & Carprofen help control pain and inflammation.
Solensia for cats & Librelia for dogs alleviates the pain associated with osteoarthritis, it targets Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) and prevents it from communicating pain signals to the brain.
There is also laser therapy, it’s a special light that penetrates the skin and tissue, triggering the release of endorphins and increasing blood flow. This process reduces inflammation, encourages cellular repair, and promotes the production of new healthy cells.

Did you know… that pets should have their teeth cleaned once a year!
All pets should have yearly teeth cleaning once they are adults. It can prevent a number of health and dental issues like gum disease, tooth decay, heart, liver & kidneys disease.
Dental care can be done at home to help maintain your pets oral health with products like CET Veggiedents, Aquadent water additive or any VOHC (The Veterinary Oral Health Council)

Did you know… puppies & kittens have to have a series of vaccines to be fully vaccinated?
Puppies and kittens need to be vaccinated early in life because the antibodies they receive from their mother start to decrease around 6–8 weeks of age.
Core vaccines like canine distemper/parvo & feline distemper (panleukopenia), rhinotracheitis & calicivirus are given every 2-4 weeks until the pet is 16-20 weeks old.

A little about our family

Claws and Paws Animal Clinic is a family-owned Veterinary Clinic where you might catch any one of the Sleeper clan loving on your furry family.

Dr. James Sleeper attended the University of Florida where he received a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in May of 2001. He has been lovingly practicing in Jacksonville and Orange Park, Florida for the past 18 years. Dr. Sleeper's first love is his family, then animals, people, motorcycles, Scrabble, and travel.

Shari Sleeper, Practice Manager, graduated with Honors from East Tennessee State University where she received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Banking and Investment Finance, and a Master of Accountancy. Shari is currently very active in the local homeschool community and is homeschooling the couple's two youngest children, MacKenzie and Keegan. Their oldest daughter, Delaney, graduated from the Sleeper Academy in 2016, and holds her EMT and Firefighter certifications in the state of Florida.

Delaney, MacKenzie, and Keegan help take care of the family's chickens, cats (Garfield, Nermal, Odie, Pookey, and Stripe), and dog (Jack).
