Baxter came into this world swinging. We almost named him Balboa, but decided the canine hero from Anchor Man was more fitting. He survived a terrible hip-lock dystocia that took the life of his sweet recipient momma mare. If not for the strength, quick thinking and refusal to give up from Ellen Stephens and Phillip Goff, our baby boy would not have made it into this world. He suffered severe peripheral nerve damage to his hind legs and was immediately taken to Marion DuPoint Scott Equine Medical Center after we finally pulled him out. He’s been there for the past week with what I can only describe as a dream team of doctors, nurses and volunteers. It has taken every ounce of dedication and creativity to get Baxter out of his foal “taco” and on his feet. To see him walk and begin to explore the world around him is nothing short of a miracle. But miracles don’t come cheap. After he is discharged, Baxter will need continued support and requires a special needs nurse mare who has raised foals with mobility issues before. We’ve found a super mare to pair him with through Cold Springs Nurse Mares and between that cost and his hospitalization, I’m running out of resources. I’ve never been good at asking for help but I want to do everything I can to give Baxter a shot at making a full recovery. The docs give him an excellent prognosis for a future in sport if his nerves are given the time they need to fully heal. Please considering contributing to his recovery! Thank you!
