Certainly we need great movers and powerful jumpers, but above all we need a partner, not a slave. We need horses that are supremely courageous, fiercely independent and phenomenally agile. Find such a horse and treasure him. Teach him that you will trust him with your life. - Jimmy Wofford

2023 + 2024. Loukas T babies

My pretty babies 🥰 “Let’s Tell the T” aka Toddy my yearling gelding on the left, and “Spill the T” aka Cinder my coming 6month old filly on the right. Both sired by LOUKAS T and are out of my Tb mare, ALLIE GRACE aka Ginger.

A big thanks to and their 🌸. So important to have the proper nutrients with no fillers for the broodmares and babies to grow them right. So pleased with their growing and conditioning.

Both kiddos were premium at their inspections and the judges commented on how well built and conditioned they were ❤️So excited to have them out and competing in a couple of years.

Do Recipient Mares Pass Traits to Foals?

ONE RESEARCHER DESCRIBES WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE RECEIVING MARE’S EFFECT ON THE FOAL IN EMBRYO TRANSFER SCENARIOS.
RECIPIENT MARE SIZE MATTERS

In a recent study French researchers tested the effect of recipient mare size and breed on the growth and hormone levels of the foals they carried. Pauline Peugnet, PhD, of the French Agricultural Research Institute, in Jouy-en-Josas, and her team transferred pony, saddle horse, and draft horse embryos into recipient pony, saddle, and draft mares. While many of the embryos went into the “right” size mares (and were used as controls), Peugnet’s group also “mixed up” the sizes, putting pony embryos in draft mares and saddle horse embryos into pony mares, for example.

They found that saddle horse foals from pony mares weighed 37% less than foals born from saddle mares, but they spent on average two weeks longer in the uterus. Pony foals from draft mares were born about a week earlier than ponies from pony mares, and they were 57% heavier at birth. The recipient mare also affected wither height, leg bone length, barrel circumference, and growth rate, Peugnet says. And certain hormone levels—namely insulin and growth factors—varied considerably among sibling foals born from different kinds of mares.

How you talk about your horse matters, because it reflects how you think about your horse.

How you think about your horse matters because it is the starting place from how you see your horse's behaviors, responses and needs...
.. and this will influence how you engage and work with your horse.

"He's just spooking to get out of work."

"She's just a snarky mare."

"He's just lazy and doesn't want to respond to my aids."

"She hates the whip."

"He just doesn't want to do it."

How do you relate to a horse if you're coming from that perspective?

Those are all negative words that come from a negative bias, and they make it seem as if the horse is plotting against us or unwilling to work towards a productive relationship.

Their brain simply isn't capable of working that way because of its construction and function.

It's in the horse's very nature to synchrinize and work together as a unit/group/herd/partnership for safety.

How about throwing away those limiting thoughts and replacing them with thoughts that reflect awareness, and offer actual insight to show our understanding of the situation and needs of our partner, the horse.

Replacing those thoughts above with more appropriate thoughts might look like this:

"He's tense or worried about something and it's distracting him from the work."

"She's sensitive and I offer my aids or requests in ways she thinks are offensive."

"He doesn't understand my aids clearly, or is maybe weak and unable to properly respond."

"She was never properly introduced to the whip, so I need to help her to reduce her anxiety."

"He just doesn't understand yet."

How do you relate to a horse if you're coming from that perspective?

The whole idea I'm trying to get at is that we need to drop our defensive negativity bias. Even in our basic thoughts towards and about our horses, because they have a tremendous influence on how we relate to them. This influences the success or failure of our partnership.

It up to you... and your thoughts.

We are new to the area so finding a Fairer to take on a new client has been a bit of a challenge up here! Martin Barrera came out no problem and is of the nicest fairrers I’ve ever worked with! Really cares about his work and is soooo talented and kind with the horses. If you’re in the Middleburg area, 100/100 can’t recommend enough!!
