Itโ€™s important to teach kids how to read a dogโ€™s body language to stay safe. While a wagging tail might seem friendly, itโ€™s not always an invitation to pet a dog. In fact, a dog showing signs of aggression may hold its tail high, wagging very quickly in a narrow, stiff motionโ€”known as a โ€˜flag tail.โ€™ This is a sign to give the dog space.

Other signs of an aggressive stance include:
โ€ข Forward body weight
โ€ข Intense, wide-eyed stare
โ€ข Ears pointing forward
โ€ข Stiff posture
โ€ข Tail held high, either wagging very quickly or completely still
โ€ข Head aligned with the spine

Teach your kids to walk away from dogs showing these signs. If an off-leash dog approaches, encourage them to โ€œbe a treeโ€โ€”stay still. Running can trigger the dogโ€™s chase instinct.

Meet Juniper ๐Ÿพ

A sweet but extremely fearful border collie mix who had a hard time adjusting to her new home. When her owner, Devon, first adopted her, Juniper was so anxious she didnโ€™t leave her kennel for 48 hours. They faced challenges with even small steps, like climbing the apartment stairs or taking a walk in the neighborhood.

Through private online sessions, we worked on building trust and confidence at a pace Juniper could handle. Together, Devon and Juniper learned to read her body language, celebrate small wins, and adjust techniques when needed. After consistent effort, Juniper now bravely takes on stairs she once feared!

How you hold the leash can make or break your success.

When you are leash walking your dog, do you wonder about the best way to hold the leash?

If you have a strong dog, I recommend having the leash cross in front of you so that you can have both hands on the leash.

Put the end of the leash in your right hand. Loop the leash around once or twice. Then take your left hand and be ready to hold the leash with your left hand if needed.

Your dog will be walking on your left.

Keep your hands close to the waist. If your hands move away from your waist your dog will be more able to pull you down.

Diego was initially terrified of approaching the car, let alone jumping in. We started with small stepsโ€”rewarding him with treats just for getting close, then playing a โ€˜go find itโ€™ game around the car to make it fun and positive. Gradually, he became comfortable enough to sniff around and eventually hop in! With patience and positive reinforcement, Diego is now ready for any road trip ๐Ÿš—
