Corrinna learned to be more confident with her dog, Thor. She was nervous with him on the leash because he walked all over the place and pulled. A lot!

After taking our Junior Outdoor Leash Walking Course, Thor now he walks more calmly and Corrinna feels in control.

Cooler temperatures, fewer distractions (compared to summer), and slower routines make Fall a great time to get on with your dog training.

Here are some Fall-specific dog training tips to make the most of the season:
• Cooler temps mean your dog won't overheat as quickly, allowing for longer, more focused training sessions outside.
• You can use the new distractions: squirrels, leaves, scents, etc., to reinforce your training.
• With Halloween and Thanksgiving coming, prepare your dog for guests, costumes, and doorbells.
• Fall hikes are popular and great for practicing loose-leash walking.
• Shorter days mean more indoor time. Use it to practice sit, stay, come, down, etc.

Are you struggling with a dog that jumps on guests? Is your dog’s jumping embarrassing or frustrating?

Autumn was an extremely exuberant puppy, so if Autumn can learn to settle so can your dog.

Put your dog on leash before your guests enter your house. Have a clicker and treats readily available. Once your dog is calm (stand, sit or down) c/t (click and treat). Repeat this process over and over as guests enter your house. It will work best if you practice this daily with pretend guests as well.

Once your dog can see a person and be relaxed on the leash, then have your guest approach your dog on leash. If your dog jumps, the guest can turn their back and/or walk away. If your dog is calm (stand, sit or down) c/t. Repeat this process until your dog learns that the approach of the guest means to be calm and not jump.

Does your dog get stressed out?

Check out this video below where we are playing a ping pong game with Diego. This is a pattern game that helps to rewire your dog's nervous system and help him become more relaxed.

When working with behavioral issues, you are aiming for your dog to be barely stressed. You want your dog to have little to no feelings of frustration / anger / anxiety / fear, etc.

While you are training with your dog, think of ways to make it fun. You can turn the training into a game!

Here are some ways to change training into a game:

• Once you are ready to move away from the trigger (scary or stressful stimuli = person, dog, car, etc.), run away from it. Running away can be more fun than walking away.

• Use toys while training your dog. If your dog wants toy, you can replace the food reward with a game of play. This could include Fetch or Tug.

• When giving the food reward, do something fun with the food. Here are some options:
o Drop it on the ground / floor and do a “go find it” game.
o Toss them into the air and have your dog catch the treat.
o Turn it into a game with enrichment toys.

Have you had a dog trainer that said they couldn’t help you because you just didn’t understand the concepts they were teaching you? The trainer may have called you "noncompliant."

It's a common problem and doesn’t help you out at all. It leaves you lost and confused.

When I joined dog 4-H in 4th grade and began actively dog training, I was taught to use punishment-based methods to get my dog to respond. When she didn’t listen, yelling and repeating the command worked great. However, in the end she felt defeated and do did I.

But I'll let you in on a huge secret: REWARD-based training works the best. Yep! It's that simple. Science has proven that dogs respond better, learn faster, and have less behavioral problems when they are trained with rewards/positive reinforcement dog training.

When I switched to reward-based training, I was happier, and I noticed that my dog responded better to commands. My dog was happier!

Struggling with a dog / puppy that ignores you?

If your dog doesn’t respond to your command or respond properly when you are training him, you need compassion to understand why your dog is not understanding what you are communicating.

When we were training Drew, there were many times he didn’t “get it” right away -- especially when we were training “leave it.”

Drew needed to back up 4 feet away from the object and sit. This was a challenge for him to learn in the beginning. Without compassion, it would have appeared that Drew was being stubborn.

Instead, he was doing everything he could to practice obedience.

We just had to break the behavior into steps and 𝙥𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙩𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚.

Drew gets it now!

Except we are still working on the squirrels!

Jennifer was frantic. Her new Brittany Spaniel puppy, Ginger, was biting everyone in the house.

She was worried that her puppy was being aggressive and the behavior seemed relentless. She had two children (ages 10 and 13). The whole family felt super stressed by this biting behavior.

Ginger was only 10 weeks old, and puppy biting is normal. I was able to reassure the owners that the behavior was not aggression.

From there, we worked on teaching the owners what to do to stop the biting so that it was not relentless.

Clicker training worked wonders, and they learned about rewarding Ginger when she was NOT biting.

Ginger also learned to respond to basic commands instead of biting. Sit and target seemed to work the best to redirect her and stop the biting.

Jennifer and the family felt much more in control when they could ask Ginger to perform another command.

They also learned that Ginger needs to get puppy energy out of her system. Redirecting her to biting a toy and playing with her was a healthy choice.

The entire family is so much more relaxed and enjoying Ginger more!

I train with Positive Reinforcement. As a result, we will be refraining from punishment-based methods and focusing on 𝙧𝙚𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 behavior that we like. As you reward that behavior, your dog will do those specific behaviors more often.

And more often.

And more often.

(Rewards, i.e., treats, are involved, remember?)

Small treats tend to work better than larger treats. I tell my dog school clients that “pea-sized” treats are good enough. Many dogs will work for crumbs!

I always tell my clients that knowing the training tools is only 10% of puppy training.

Here are a few tips to help you:
🐾 Be in the moment. Thinking too much about frustrating past behavior and how it will happen again in the future will bring too much stress into your life!
🐾 When you get frustrated, take a break.
🐾 Changing your thoughts is paramount to success. Thoughts that offer curiosity, wonder, and flexibility are best.
🐾 Understand that changing behavior takes time. Celebrate even the smallest victories.
🐾 Get help. If you are struggling with this, talk with friends that are positive and can help you see gratitude and happiness in your life.
