The right treats make dog training fun and successful.

What does your dog like?

It’s got to be something that your dog enjoys and is motivating to him or her.

For some dogs, that is cheese, hotdogs, hamburger, and chicken. For other dogs, they are motivated by dog treats, such as Zukes, Blue Buffalo Bites, Bill Jack Treats, etc. 🦴

Or does a toy work better for your dog?

Your dog has to be in a playful mode for toys to work, and you have to use the toy that your dog wants. Is it a ball? A tug toy? A stuffed toy? A squeaky toy? 🥎

We use 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 methods to keep you and your dog emotionally and psychologically healthy. The behaviors that you like are rewarded, and we teach you to redirect behaviors that you dislike.

For example, if your dog jumps, turn your back and reward the sit. If your dog is barking at other dogs in the class, train leave it. This teaches your dog to look away from the other dogs and, instead, to look at you.

The world seems to be moving faster and faster. We all want a quick fix, and to put less effort into reaching our goals.

A big training secret is that, to create peace of mind, you need to dedicate yourself to consistency and persistence with your dog training.

Dog owners maybe disappointed at first to realize that they have to put forth much effort. However, in the long run, knowing this will help you reach your goals.

Like anything else, you need to take the time to do something right.

Is your dog scared of his harness? With a little work, you can turn that fear into comfort and confidence!

𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄:
Place the harness on the floor and let your pup explore it at their own pace. Reward them with treats for sniffing or even just looking at it.

𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:
Every time the harness comes out, make it rain treats, toys, or praise. Soon your dog will think, “Harness = good stuff!”

𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗯𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽:
Touch the harness → treat.
Hold it near their neck → treat.
Slip it on gently → treat.
Go at your dog’s pace, never forcing it.

𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝘁:
A soft, well-fitted harness can make all the difference. It should be snug but not tight, and never rub or pinch.

With patience and consistency, your pup will soon wag their tail when the harness comes out! 🐾

After working together a bit privately, Amber signed up for our Elementary Obedience Group Course. This cute Australian Shepherd learned lots of commands, such as target, come, down, sit, stay, etc.

"Johanna is a really special trainer. We signed our rescue dog Scout up for training because she almost ran away chasing deer in our neighborhood. Scout also pulled really hard on the leash and I was afraid someone might fall when walking her....

Linda called Four Legged Scholars in distress. Her German Shepherd, Evie, was pulling so hard on the leash that Linda was getting injured.

As a result, Linda had not walked her dog in ages!

When I met her, I was surprised how hard Evie pulled on the leash. Despite her hard pulling, I knew that I could help them.

We started training calm behavior with the leash indoors first: Evie got rewarded when she was calm and just saw the leash.

She then got rewarded in baby steps:
• for being calm when wearing the leash indoors
• when the front door was opened
• outside the door on the porch
• walking down the stairs

Doing this all in stages, and with the right rewards, made a huge difference.

Soon Linda and Evie were safely walking again! 😊

Did you know that many dogs find Halloween unpredictable and scary?

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝟱 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗗𝗼𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻:

1.) 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗼 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲. He will probably feel uneasy seeing lots of people running around.

2.) 𝗗𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗺𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁. Skip it if he shows classic behaviors such as running away, freezing, avoiding you, lowering his tail or his ears or his whole body.

3.) 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝙩𝙤𝙭𝙞𝙘 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴. Xylitol and chocolate are especially bad, so keep these away from him. “Leave it” is a great command to practice when performing dog training.

4.) 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲, 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿. Your dog may feel better if he doesn’t have to see and hear everything.

5.) 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Give him some treats to occupy him, such as bully sticks, Kongs, antlers, and stuffed cow hooves. Chewing is a great way for your dog to relieve stress.

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻! 🐶

Here are some tips to help you with leash walking:

• Keep your walks short and successful. Long walks where your dog is pulling is stressful. Start with just 5 - 15 minute walks until both you and your dog are ready for longer walks.

• Give frequent rewards for walking on a loose leash.

• Start training in your home or other low distracting areas. Move to more distracting areas when both you and your dog are getting the hang of the loose leash walking concept.

• When your dog pulls on the leash, do one of the following so he will learn that pulling does not work: stop walking, change directions, or take a few steps backwards. Your dog will begin to learn that pulling on the leash means he doesn’t get to go forward. Once the leash is loose again, resume walking forward.

• It can be tempting to use choke collars, prong collars and shock collars to train loose leash walking. But these can create aggression and fear problems. If you feel that you need to, use a front hook harness instead, such as PetSafe, the Freedom Harness or a Gentle Leader. These are much more humane and will create more positive results.

Are you feeling that you just cannot get your dog to listen?

One of the common issues that we notice is people learning the training tools and then expecting that their dog will listen.

Unfortunately, this is NOT the case. Your dog will not listen just because 𝙮𝙤𝙪 know the tools.

First and foremost, you have to practice the tools to get your dog to listen. You have to also realize that dog training will happen 𝙖𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙙𝙤𝙜’𝙨 𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨.

You can work with your dog often and be consistent. These things help, but your dog will learn when he is ready. Just like a child, each one learns at their own pace.

Keep being persistent and positive in your dog training. I promise, in time, it will pay off!
