It’s a challenging question, but you need to ask yourself: did you get your two dogs to be friends with each other or to be companions for you?

If your intention was to cultivate a friendship between the two of them, be prepared for the reality that your relationship with each dog individually may suffer and never be as strong as their bond.

When bringing two dogs into your home, whether they are litter mates or have an age gap, your primary focus must be on building a strong bond with each of them. You should prioritize creating a connection where they derive more enjoyment from you than from each other. This process begins with effective crate training, utilizing their time out of the crate to foster bonding, enrichment, and training experiences that come directly from you.

Implementing this approach will significantly enhance the relevance of your relationship with your dog, ensuring that you are not merely the person holding the leash but rather an integral part of their happiness and well-being.

Sometimes, we can skip certain steps, while at other times, we may need to spend more time on a specific step. HELP RESCUE 🛟 DUCHESS👇🏼

We can either compel a nervous dog, increasing its suspicion of the world around it, or we can motivate that dog to push itself harder.

Motivating a nervous dog by withholding what it desires can lead to a canine that learns to invest effort into achieving its goals.

Duchess is exceptionally apprehensive about new experiences. Even the sound of a clicker sends her running for cover. To teach her what we expect, we gradually introduced the platform by presenting her food closer and closer to the desired response: all four feet on the platform. This process demands patience from us and a degree of internal motivation from Duchess. If we were to force her into positions, it could heighten her fear and make her believe the environment controls her outcomes. We want her to understand that her own motivation is what leads her to get what she wants.

Additionally, we're building an association between the electrical stimulation she feels to food and the fact that those stimulations cease when she’s on the platform. This approach is more effective than using a clicker, since the sound of that clicker frightens her more than the sensations generated by the remote collar.

🦴🐾 here’s Duchess again, our sweet rescue with the ! ❤️ She’s learning new skills every day to help her find her forever home! Today, we’re working on a simple exercise to get her to accept the leash and putting on her collar using what we call counter conditioning with food! 🌟

👉 Here’s one way we do it:

1. Positive Association: We start by presenting Duchess the food and collar asking her to jump on our legs. When puts her muzzle in the palm, we immediately reward her with the food! This helps her associate the collar with something positive. 🍖

2. Gradual Approach: We gradually progress into slipping the collar over her head while she’s trying to get the food, rewarding after the collar has gone over or is off again.

3. Practice Makes Perfect: Once she’s comfortable, through repetition she’ll start to offer the behavior of jumping to ask for the collar to be put on! 🥳

4. Short Sessions: Keep training sessions short and fun! You can always come back for more later.

By using food to build positive associations, Duchess is learning that wearing a collar and being leashed can be a wonderful experience. Every little step brings her closer to finding her forever family! 🏠❤️

This process demands patience from us and a degree of internal motivation from Duchess. If we were to force her into positions, it could heighten her fear and make her believe the environment controls her outcomes. We want her to understand that her own motivation is what leads her to get what she wants. Additionally, we're building an association between the electrical stimulation she feels to food and the fact that those stimulations cease when she’s on the platform. This approach is more effective than using a clicker, since the sound of that clicker frightens her more than the sensations generated by the remote collar. 🦴🐾 here’s Duchess again, our sweet rescue with the @pet_adoption_league! ❤️ She’s learning new skills every day to help her find her forever home! Today, we’re working on a simple exercise to get her to accept the leash and putting on her collar using what we call counter conditioning with food! 🌟 👉 Here’s one way we do it: 1. Positive Association: We start by presenting Duchess the food and collar asking her to jump on our legs. When puts her muzzle in the palm, we immediately reward her with the food! This helps her associate the collar with something positive. 🍖 2. Gradual Approach: We gradually progress into slipping the collar over her head while she’s trying to get the food, rewarding after the collar has gone over or is off again. 3. Practice Makes Perfect: Once she’s comfortable, through repetition she’ll start to offer the behavior of jumping to ask for the collar to be put on! 🥳 4. Short Sessions: Keep training sessions short and fun! You can always come back for more later. By using food to build positive associations, Duchess is learning that wearing a collar and being leashed can be a wonderful experience. From the moment we brought her home, we focused on building a strong bond through consistent training. We began with essential commands like sit, stay, and come, fostering trust while laying the foundation for her development. Socialization was crucial, as we introduced Widow to various environments, people, and pets. Group training sessions helped her gain confidence, while also enhancing her protective instincts. Practicing the recall by recalling back to the shade on a hot day will increase the less desired behavior of coming back if the dog needs to seek shade for comfort. Seeking is a genuine emotion a dog experiences. Blue Line K9 Dog Training is a family owned, military, and law enforcement veteran company with over ten years of experience training dogs. We’ve trained dogs from puppies to police K9’s and whether you have a dog that needs to be crate trained, potty trained, lessons in basic obedience, personal protection, or scent detection, we’ve got you covered. We use proven techniques learned through years of experience in training environments and in life or death situations. The same principles used to train professional working dogs are used to teach a dog to be obedient around the house.

Given our background and the support for law enforcement we are partnering with the National Police Dog Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, and donating a percentage of our profits to them. We believe in supporting a cause bigger than us and giving back to an organization that has helped support so many police K9 programs nationwide.
