Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, and of course, delicious food. However, all of that feasting can pose a risk to our furry family members. Here are three common pet emergencies we see around the turkey holiday.

🧄🍷Ingestion of Toxic Substances: Many Thanksgiving foods are toxic to pets, such as grapes, raisins, xylitol, onions, garlic, and alcohol. Even small amounts of these substances can cause serious illness or death.

🍗🥓Pancreatitis: Rich, fatty foods like turkey skin, gravy, and stuffing can cause pancreatitis, a serious inflammation of the pancreas. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and abdominal pain.

🌽🦴Intestinal Obstruction: Keep your pet away from decorations, corn on the cob, raw or cooked bones, and food wrappers. These items can cause intestinal blockages, which require surgery to remove.

Congratulations, Dr. Margret Lenfest! We are super excited to welcome you and your expertise in sports medicine! 💜

📣🥳💜 We are thrilled to announce Dr. Margret Lenfest has joined the Guardian Family specializing in sports medicine! Dr. Lenfest will help pets with a variety of conditions that cause mobility problems.

Bio -----

Margret Lenfest, VMD, CVA, grew up outside Philadelphia and was heavily involved in the equestrian sport show jumping. This is where her love of sports medicine began as she learned to keep her own horses fit and happy during their competition careers and into retirement. Margret attended Swarthmore College and received a degree in Biology prior to attending the University of Pennsylvania for vet school. She then completed a rotating internship in southern Florida at the Coral Springs Animal Hospital before moving to Ithaca NY for a residency in canine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation at Cornell University.

For additional work with exceptional canine athletes, Margret volunteered as a race veterinarian for the 2020 and 2021 Yukon Quest sled dog race in the Alaskan interior and published two papers from the data collected during those races. Margret also served on the official show veterinary team at Westminster Dog Show from 2021 – 2023 and was part of the show veterinary team at the Wine Country dog show series in 2021 and 2022.

Margret’s clinical interests include regenerative medicine such as using mesenchymal stem cells and platelet rich plasma to improve healing of various injuries and managing chronic arthritis. She also has a strong interest in diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound for diagnosing injuries and monitoring progress. In her spare time Margret enjoys hiking with her Australian Shepherd Zara, cooking, and reading.

We will miss you, Bob Barker.💜 Thank you for being such a great advocate for pets.

The world of animal rescue and advocacy has lost a giant champion😞

Bob Barker passed away yesterday at 99 years old. While many of us remember him from being the host of "The Price is Right" for so many years, it was the way he passionately ended each episode, telling viewers to spay or neuter their pets, that made him such a hero to so many! 🐾

RIP Mr. Barker ... well ... your name says it all ♥️ You will be remembered for your wonderful heart, your outspoken advocacy for animal rights, and your decades of amazing life-saving work for orphaned pets everywhere! 🌟
