Sage
Most often, our rescues are animals with traumatic histories. We don’t know what happened to the Amigos but in her almost 2 years with us, Sage has only recently started sharing her howl. It’s the most beautiful because she is starting to trust it’s ok to be heard!

Wiley
Wiley says ‘if there’s a will, there’s a way!’ She’s got this!
As a rescue, we encounter a wide array of personalities and behaviors in our rescue animals. To ensure safety of our staff and volunteers, we often work protected contact with our animals.
This means we don’t share free space with the animal. There is a protective barrier between us and them. One method of protected contact is shifting. This method allows you to move an animal into a different space so you can enter. This is a trained behavior.
Here you can see a video of us training a protected contact animal to use a lock-in so staff can clean the enclosure. This allows our staff to enter the animal’s space safely while securing them away from us in a separate area.
It takes time to build trust with an animal, in order for them to follow you into a different area, move to a different location that you ask or shift them out of their typical space.
We work hard to incorporate this training into our daily husbandry routines for both the well-being of our animals and staff.
