One way to honor a beloved companion who has passed away is by putting together a scrapbook, photo journal, or video diary. Gathering mementos from joyful moments in a single space can offer a therapeutic and comforting experience, and might even bring laughter and smiles as you remember beautiful and happy moments together. This can also be a great way to involving children in this creative process, and help them navigate through their grief. The final outcome is a lovely memorial that you can revisit whenever you need.

Today is World Pet Memorial Day. It's a day dedicated to honoring and remembering the pets we've lost, and also to show kindness and support to those who are currently grieving the loss of their beloved furry friends. As we celebrate World Pet Memorial Day, we welcome you to share a photo of your beloved pets to honor their memory and remember the love and happiness they brought to us.

One of our local rescues suffered a tragic loss this past weekend. In the middle of the night, they were woken by an electrical fire that was quickly tearing through their home. Jess and Brad, the founders of Margaret’s Saving Grace Bully Rescue, barely made it out of their home before it was fully engulfed. They unfortunately lost 4 of their personal dogs, and one is currently hospitalized at the veterinary neurologist in critical condition. Their foster dogs made it out safely and are in temporary foster homes. They lost their home and everything inside of it.

I am sharing this story so that we can, as a community, continue to support this family and the rescue. They are incredibly strong, and are sharing updates on the rescue's page, but they need all of the support we can offer right now. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers, and if you are in a place where you feel comfortable financially supporting them, I have copied their donation information from one of their posts on the rescue's page:

Be Kind To Animals Week is an annual week-long celebration held in the first full week of May and takes place from May 5 to 11 this year. This week reminds us to not only appreciate the animals that bring joy into our lives, but also to understand their needs and importance in the our world.

Find a way to celebrate this week, whether it be by donating to a local shelter, volunteering at a wildlife rehabilitation center, or simply pampering your pets. Let’s be kind to every animal we come across - both this week and always.

You’ve probably heard the saying, “One dog year is like seven human years.” but scientific research has given us new insight into how dogs age. We now know that the aging process is accelerated at the beginning; a one year old dog is on average about 31 human years, and the aging process slows down as time goes on. A medium-sized 10-year-old dog is about 68 in human years.

Breed, genetics, lifestyle, and size can also play a factor; for example, smaller dogs typically live longer than their larger counterparts.

Knowing how ‘old’ your dog is can help you watch for signs of aging so you can help ensure that your friend has the happiest, healthiest, and longest life possible.
