🐾 Coyote Mating Season Starts in January – Keep Your Pets Safe! 🐾

In Connecticut, late January marks the beginning of coyote mating season, which means these wild canines may become more active and territorial than normal. Attacks on people are rare, but pets under 25lbs may be viewed as prey and larger dogs can be viewed as threats. Here’s a few tips to ensure everyone stays safe:

1️⃣ Leash Up: Keep dogs on a leash during walks and avoid letting them roam off-leash in wooded or rural areas.
2️⃣ Supervise Outdoor Time: Always keep an eye on your pets when they’re outside, especially at dawn or dusk when coyotes are most active. Coyotes can climb or dig under fences, so cats and small dogs should be watched extra closely.
3️⃣ Don’t Feed Wildlife: Secure any pet food or garbage outside so it doesn’t attract wildlife.
4️⃣ Remove Dens: Close up crawl spaces under decks and buildings to prevent coyotes from making their dens there.

If you do encounter a coyote, loud noises such as shouting or using an airhorn, or throwing objects, can scare them away. Coyotes are fascinating animals who are an important part of our local ecosystem – with a little care, both people and coyotes can continue to safely co-exist. 🐕💚

🐾 January is National Train Your Dog Month! 🐾
Looking for a great New Year’s resolution for both you and your pup? There’s no better time to start fresh and build a stronger bond with your pup through training! 🐶✨ Training isn’t just about showing off fancy tricks - it helps improve communication, builds trust, and is excellent mental stimulation for your dog.

What’s something you’d like to teach your dog? It could be a command such as “high-five” or “speak,” or even behavior such as being calm for nail trimming or not pulling on the leash. Consistency and positive reinforcement are key to success. Whether you’ve signed up for a class or are working alone, dogs of any age can greatly benefit from some extra training!

Let’s make 2025 the year of well-behaved pups! 🐕❤️

🐾 Protect Your Dog’s Paws This Winter! ❄️

When you slip on your winter boots to take your dog for a walk, don’t forget about their feet too! Salt and ice melt on the sidewalks can cause painful burning, dryness, and chapping and cracking to our dogs’ paws, causing them to limp or even refuse to walk. To keep your pup comfortable, try some tips to keep those paws happy and healthy:

Use Dog Booties: Protect their paws from salt and cold surfaces with booties made for winter walks.
Apply Paw Balm: You can rub paw balm onto your dog’s pads to create a barrier and keep them moisturized.
Rinse & Wipe: After every walk, rinse or wipe your dog’s paws to remove any salt or chemicals.
Choose Pet-Safe Salt: If possible, use pet-friendly ice melt around your home.

With a little extra care, your dog can enjoy their winter adventures safely! 🐕❄️

🚗 Keep Your Pets Safe During Holiday Travel! 🐾
The holiday season is a busy time for travel, and whether you’re hitting the road or hosting a gathering it’s important to keep our pet’s safety in mind. Before you get started, make sure you’re keeping them secure:

• Microchip & ID Tags: Ensure your pet’s microchip information is up-to-date and that they’re wearing a collar with current ID tags while traveling and away from home.

• Secure Carriers & Leashes: Always use a secure carrier or leash when transporting pets to prevent accidental escapes. When pets aren’t familiar with their surroundings, they’re much more likely to get scared or lost.

• Keep Doors Closed: Be mindful of open doors during pit stops or while visiting family, and make sure your pet is secured on a leash or in a carrier beforehand so they don’t slip out unnoticed!

By taking these steps, you can enjoy your holiday travels with peace of mind knowing your furry friends are safe. 🐶🐱❤️

🎄🌟 Are Poinsettias Safe for Pets? 🌟🎄

If you’re decorating for the holidays, you might be eyeing a festive poinsettia plant. We know some plants, like lilies, are seriously toxic to pets - so what about poinsettias?

Here’s the good news: while poinsettias are technically toxic to cats and dogs, they usually cause only mild, non-emergency symptoms. 🌿🐾 The sap in the plant can cause irritation or rash-like symptoms. If your pet takes a nibble, they might experience:
Red or itchy skin around the mouth or eyes
Excess drooling
Vomiting

✨ How to Stay Safe:
👉 Keep poinsettias out of reach of pets to avoid any temptation.
👉 If your pet swallows leaves or flowers or has persistent or serious symptoms, contact your vet immediately.

With a little caution, you can safely decorate your home with these beautiful holiday plants—just make sure your pets admire them from a distance! 🐕🐈💚

🐾 Keep Pets Safe & Respect Wildlife 🌿

Today is Wildlife Conservation Day, an important reminder to be respectful and appreciative of the amazing wildlife that lives around us! Around 60% of Connecticut is covered in forests, and our woods are home to many amazing animals such as bobcats, black bears, red and gray foxes, coyotes, deer, and many more! Our pets love exploring the outdoors with us, but it’s important to ensure their adventures are safe for both them and the wildlife they may encounter. Here are some tips to help protect your furry friends and the environment:

1- Leash Up: Always keep your pets on a leash during hikes or walks in areas where wildlife may be present. This prevents accidental encounters that could harm or distress both your pet and wild animals.

2- Don’t Feed Wildlife: Human food can make animals sick, and it also encourages unwanted behavior – animals that are used to handouts may approach people or become aggressive.

3- Vaccinate & Protect: Ensure your pet is up-to-date on vaccinations and preventatives to reduce risks from wildlife-transmitted diseases, and make sure to clean up any pet waste while outdoors.

By practicing safety and respect, we can enjoy nature with our pets while helping preserve the balance of local ecosystems. 🐕🌳

Today, we’re celebrating the unique charm and endless love of mixed-breed dogs – aka “mutts!” 🐶❤️ Mutts may not have pedigrees, but they have plenty of personality, loyalty, and affection to give. 🦃 Thanksgiving Pet Safety Tips 🐾

Let’s talk turkey! Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, and delicious food - but don’t forget about keeping your pets safe during the festivities! Here are some tips to ensure a happy and healthy holiday for everyone:

🍗 Watch the Table Scraps: While some plain baked turkey or potatoes can make a nice snack for your pup, many foods on the table can cause some serious digestive trouble. Foods with lots of cream, butter, salt, and sugar should be saved for humans only, and make sure to watch the garbage to make sure your pet doesn’t go on a raid!

🚗 Travel Safety: If you’re hitting the road, make sure your pet is secured in a crate or with a pet seatbelt. Keep your dog leashed when you’re traveling

🕯️ Holiday Hosting: If your house is going to be busy and bustling, it may be easier (and safer) to keep your pet in a quiet room or behind a baby gate to ensure they don’t dash out the door or find trouble in the kitchen.

Let’s make this Thanksgiving a safe and enjoyable one for all our furry friends! Share your favorite holiday moments with your pets in the comments below. 🐶🐱❤️
