Pet owners, take notice! We’re looking at record high temps over the next few days, and many of our pets will be at risk of deadly heatstroke! ☀️🌡️

🐾Any dog can get heatstroke, but if any of the following factors apply to your dog, they are at higher risk:
-Overweight
-Brachycephalic (short-nosed like pugs, bulldogs)
-Long/thick fur
-Seniors or young puppies
-Large/giant breeds
-Pre-existing medical conditions (especially cardiac or respiratory problems)

Symptoms of heatstroke include: rapid breathing (hyperventilation), red gums/tongue, excessive or frothy drool, vomiting/diarrhea, tremors, loss of balance, and collapse. Pets with these signs should go to the closest ER immediately - heatstroke is FATAL if not treated. For more information, visit https://www.pieperveterinary.com/blog/preventing-heatstroke/

Please be careful this week - provide lots of shade and water, limit exercise to short outings at dawn and dusk, and DO NOT leave your dog in your car! Being informed and knowing the signs is the best way to keep your pets healthy. Stay safe! 🐶

☀️🐶 The forecast is calling for a warm and sunny weekend, perfect for getting outside! But if you’re heading out and about, please leave your pets at home rather than risk leaving them alone in the car.

Even on an 85°F day, the inside of your car can hit over 100°F in just 10 minutes - and cracking the windows or parking in the shade isn’t enough. Dogs and cats can’t sweat like we do, making them more prone to dangerous heatstroke, especially if they have thick coats, flat faces, or are overweight.

We know it seems like common sense, but overheating can and does kill pets – sadly, we see it every summer. Accidents can happen to anyone, so please plan ahead and don’t take the risk. Let’s make sure everyone enjoys the summer safely! 💛

🐾🎆 PSA for pet parents – if your furry family members take anxiety medications to help them cope with fireworks over the 4th of July, check your supply NOW!

📅 Make sure you have enough medication to get them through the holiday. If it looks like you’ll need a refill, get that requested now to allow for plenty of time. Veterinary board regulations require that pets have had an exam within the past year in order for us to legally dispense medications. If your pet is overdue, you may need to schedule a quick visit before we can help.

No one wants to be rushing around last-minute before what should be a nice holiday weekend! Take the time now to make sure you and your pets are prepared, and that you have everything you need to ensure that both of you stay stress-free.

📞 Have questions about refills or appointments? Give us a call — we’re here to help!

Traveling With Pets This Summer? ☀️🐾

Summer adventures are better knowing your best friend is safe and sound! Whether they’re tagging along for the ride or staying home with a sitter or kennel, make sure your pet’s travel checklist is all ready to go:

Ensure your pet is caught up on vaccines and their flea/ tick preventatives so they don’t bring back any hitchhikers.
Check that their ID tags and microchip are updated with your best contact info.
If traveling, do a search for 24hr hospitals in your area so you know where to go in case of emergency. If using a sitter or kennel, make sure they know where to go if your pet needs help.

Traveling can be fun, but it can also bring new risks. Make sure that you’re setting your furry friends up for success by being prepared and organized, and give your veterinarian a call if you need refills, records, or a checkup before you go!

🐦 It’s baby bird season in Connecticut!
We often get calls from kindhearted people who find young birds and want to help. Here’s what to do:

• Fledglings (feathered & upright): These babies are learning to fly and will spend a few days on the ground while their parents watch nearby. Give them space - they’re doing just fine!

• Nestlings (no feathers): If you see a nest, gently place them back in. 🐣 It’s a MYTH that bird parents will abandon babies if touched by humans!

• Injured, sick, or orphaned birds: Use https://ahnow.org or the Animal Help Now app to find a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.
⚠️ Remember: It’s illegal for anyone without a license to care for wild native animals.

Let’s all work together to protect our local wildlife 💚

🕷️ Have you been seeing more ticks than usual this year? You’re not imagining things!
🌰 Connecticut had a “bumper crop” of acorns last fall which means oak trees made more acorns than usual. More acorns = more mice (a favorite host of ticks). Add in a mild winter, and we’re seeing a major increase in ticks this spring.

🩺 It’s the start of the month, so if you haven’t already given your pets their flea and tick preventatives, now is the time! Ticks can spread diseases such as Lyme and anaplasma, which often come with symptoms such as lethargy, fever, stiffness and limping, and in extreme cases even kidney damage. If you’re running low on preventatives, or your pet seems under the weather, give us a call – we’re here to help keep your pets protected and healthy all season long! 🌿

🚗🐾 Buckle Up, Pup - Let’s Talk Pet Car Safety!

Summer is here, and that means more adventures with your furry friends! ☀️ Whether it’s a trip to the park or a multi-day road trip, making sure your pets are safe in the car is just as important as buckling up yourself.

Here are a few simple ways to stay safe on the road:
• Never drive with your pet on your lap
• Keep cats and small animals in secure carriers
• Use a car safety harness or crate for dogs
• Leash up before opening car doors to prevent sudden escapes
• Never leave your pets unattended in the car

And while it may look cute, letting your dog hang out the window can be dangerous: flying debris, sharp turns, or sudden stops can lead to serious injuries. If the window’s open, make sure your pup is buckled in!

Our ER team sees unrestrained pets hurt in car accidents every year. Don’t take the risk - make sure all members of the family are set up for safety this summer! 🐶

It’s National Senior Health & Fitness Day – for Pets Too!🐾

Today we’re celebrating healthy aging for seniors, and that includes our senior pets! Just like people, pets benefit from regular physical and mental activity as they age. While many pets can slow down a bit as they age, keeping their bodies and minds engaged is critical to ensuring they live a long and happy life.

Try gentle walks, swimming, or low-impact games with your older dog, or use puzzle games and feeders to keep their minds sharp. 🧩 And if your pet seems stiff or uncomfortable, talk to your veterinarian about ways to manage pain and keep them moving.

Let’s keep our golden oldies thriving! 💛 Share a photo of your sweet senior with us in the comments!
