We're in for a hot week - please use caution when it comes to keeping your beloved pets safe!

Any dog or cat can get heatstroke, but if any of the following factors apply to your dog, they are at an increased risk of danger:
-Brachycephalic breeds (short-faced like pugs, bulldogs, Persian cats)
-Long, thick , or darkly-colored coat
-Overweight or obese
-Seniors and young puppies
-Large or giant breeds
-Pre-existing medical conditions (especially cardiac or respiratory problems)

Symptoms of heatstroke include rapid breathing (hyperventilation), red gums/tongue, excessive drooling, vomiting/diarrhea, tremors, loss of balance, and collapse. Pets with these signs should go to the closest ER immediately - heatstroke can be FATAL if not treated.

Please be careful this week - provide lots of shade and water, avoid exercise during the heat of the day, stay off hot asphalt, and most importantly DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DOG IN YOUR CAR!! We see heatstroke cases regularly in our ER and sadly many of these dogs do not make it. Being informed and knowing the signs is the best way to keep your pets healthy. Stay safe!

We would like to share our deepest condolences to the family, friends and fellow officers of Trooper First Class Aaron Pelletier.

TFC Aaron Pelletier served Connecticut for nine years, most recently as a K9 officer with his partner K9 Roso.

One of the things that makes K9 police work possible is the dedication and patience of the dog's human handler. We appreciate and honor the relationship between TFC Pelletier and his K9 partner, and thank him for his service.

It’s the first of the month – have your pets gotten their flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives yet?

Most preventative medications should be given once a month, so if you haven’t given any to your pets in a while or need to start up, now is the perfect day to do so! We always recommend picking an easy-to-remember date, or marking it on your calendar, so you can make sure your pet doesn’t have a lapse in coverage. We are now fully in flea, tick, and mosquito season, which means your pets need preventative medication in order to keep them safe from dangerous diseases like Lyme and heartworm! If you’ve used up your last doses, now is the perfect time to pick up your refills so you’re fully stocked for the summer. Law requires that veterinarians can only dispense medications to pets they have seen within the last year, so if your pet is due for their annual exam make sure to get that scheduled so you can enjoy the summer without interruption.

Got a question about preventatives? We can help! There’s lots of different options for preventatives – just give us a call and we can help you find the best option for you and your pet.

Happy National Pet Day! Can you help us celebrate? Show us the most recent photo you took of your pet so we can say hello! 🐾

Of course, every day is Pet Day when you work in veterinary medicine! We love our patients just like we love our personal pets – through the good times and the bad, we’re all animal lovers at the end of the day and that passion is what drives us. Whether your pet is a long-time client or it's their very first visit, helping them feel their best is what makes all the hard worth it. Make sure to give your pets an extra treat today to help say thank-you for all of the joy and enrichment they bring to our lives ❤

Working in veterinary medicine doesn't mean you're cuddling with puppies and kittens 24/7 - but when the opportunity presents itself, of course we have to oblige! This little kitty is Willow, here getting some love from our veterinary assistant Georgia at our Essex hospital. Willow is about 4 months old. She is super sweet and loves to be snuggled, so while she was visiting Dr. Caginalp for her check-up we made sure to give her all the attention she wanted
! Luckily Willow's family is taking excellent care of this special little girl ❤

It’s time for a holiday weekend! Easter is upon us, and to help make sure you spend the weekend out having fun hiding eggs instead of waiting at the veterinarian’s office, make sure you’re aware of how to keep your pets safe! According to ASPCA Poison Control, these are the top hazards that they get calls about on Easter:

-CHOCOLATE: Chocolate contains a compound called theobromine which is toxic to our pets – it causes an increased heartrate, vomiting, diarrhea, trembling, and at high doses can even cause seizures. The darker or more bitter the chocolate, the more toxic it is – just a few ounces of baking chocolate can send a giant dog to the ER!

-LILIES: Every part of the lily – including pollen, leaves, and the water inside a vase – is toxic, and cats are especially sensitive. Lily toxicity can cause rapid, fatal kidney damage, with signs including vomiting, lethargy, drooling, and lack of appetite. Any of the “true lilies” (including Easter lilies) or daylilies are the most toxic and should be kept far away from pets.

-XYLITOL: Xylitol (sometimes known as “birch sugar”) is an artificial sweetener. Most often found in sugar-free gum, it’s also used in some candies and gummies. Xylitol is highly toxic and even a small amount can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), seizures, or fatal liver damage.

-EASTER GRASS: While Easter Grass isn’t toxic, many pets find it irresistible to chew on – and when swallowed, those long strings of plastic can cause blockages in the GI tract, which can be fatal.

-TABLE FOOD: Be careful with table scraps! Foods that are very rich or high in fat and salt can cause stomach upset (vomiting and diarrhea) in our pets, and in some cases can even trigger dangerous pancreatitis. If you’re preparing a ham, make sure to keep the bones away from your dog, as they can cause blockages or splinters when chewed.

-HERBICIDES: As garden season starts, many of us start working on planting our favorite flowers. Keep fertilizers and chemicals out of reach of your pets!

Beautiful Lucy visited our Essex hospital for a nail and fur trim with our veterinary technician Melissa! Lucy is a 3-year old Maine C**n cat, a distinctive breed best known for their tufted ears, thick fur, and large size. She visits us regularly for nail trims and to make sure that gorgeous coat is staying clean and mat-free. While cats will naturally scratch things to keep their nails short, many cats are helped out by regular trimmings to prevent ingrown nails (and to keep damage to your furniture to a minimum). Melissa is Essex's resident cat enthusiast and is certified in handling by the American Association of Feline Practitioners, and was happy to help Lucy feel her best!

Being in veterinary medicine means you never stop learning! This week, our amazing Training Program Manager, Angela, visited our Essex primary care hospital for a refresher training course on CPR for our doctors and staff. CPR may seem like it's just a skill for emergency rooms, but it's important that all of our hospitals are knowledgeable and experienced in performing it - you never know when a patient may need help, and a quick response can quite literally make a life-or-death difference. Angela helped us review CPR for both cats and dogs as well as humans so our Essex team can be fully prepared!

We're always happy to give our patients some extra TLC! Thibodaux the Dachshund had his neuter procedure with Dr. Wojtkowski at our Marlborough primary care hospital. Spays and neuters are very routine and safe surgeries, but it's still important to perform them with care and make sure our patients are getting all the support they need while they stay with us - and our veterinary assistant Sam was more than happy to share a little extra love with Thibodaux ❤ He did great for his surgery and is now home recovering with his family.

Adorable puppy Lucy paid our Essex hospital a visit! She's a 12-week old black Labrador retriever who saw Dr. Caginalp for a check-up and vaccinations, and she got lots of love from our staff while she was there, including Megan from our front desk! Building up a positive association with visiting the veterinarian is so important for helping young puppies stay stress-free and calm during their visits - and of course we'll never turn down the opportunity for some puppy love!

🌼 Happy first day of spring! Today is the vernal equinox, when daylight and night are perfectly equal and astronomical spring officially begins. We’ve been enjoying the sunshine and mild weather, and the plants are coming to life too. Whether it’s puppies digging up bulbs or cats nibbling on leaves, our ER sees a variety of toxic plant cases every year - and knowing which ones may be dangerous can be key to keeping your pets safe.

There are many more toxic plants besides the ones pictured here – we recommend checking the ASPCA Poison Control website at https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants for information on specific plants, and what signs you should look out for. If you suspect your pet has ingested a harmful plant, contact poison control for recommendations on how to proceed.

It was a Double Doodle day at Marlborough! These little fluffballs are Daisy and Wilson, a brother-sister pair of 12-week old Goldendoodle puppies, here with Dr. Tipton for their first visit with us. Both puppies got a complete check-up, a f***l test, and some important vaccinations (including rabies) to make sure they stay protected and healthy. Our Marlborough team loved seeing this adorable duo ❤

She weighed in at just over 10lbs and was a very good girl for her visit!

Rabies is alive and well in Connecticut – a raccoon from Windsor Locks tested positive for the virus just today! Please double-check that your dogs and cats have recently been vaccinated for rabies, or give your veterinarian a call to schedule an appointment to get them up-to-date. Rabies is 100% fatal in animals and is found in common wildlife such as raccoons, skunks, bats, and foxes, so if your pet ever gets exposed to a wild animal it’s important to get them checked out ASAP. Stay safe!

We had a great day showing Girl Scout Troop #65090 all about veterinary medicine at our Marlborough primary care hospital! The girls got to tour the hospital, meet the doctors, and learn all about the hard work that goes on to help our beloved pets. Many of our veterinarians at Pieper were inspired to start their careers from a childhood love of animals, and we want to do whatever we can to help foster the next generation! Thank you to the troop and leaders, and the Marlborough hospital team for making such an amazing day!

Next week is Valentine’s Day and the U.S. alone is estimated to spend over $2 billion on flowers, many of which can be seriously toxic to our cats and dogs. Before you buy that beautiful bouquet for someone with pets, stop and check that you’re not accidentally gifting them something dangerous – their pets will thank you for it!

Dozer got all dressed up for his visit – check out that shiny gold chain! This handsome guy is a 3-year old French Bulldog who visited Dr. Lamperelli at our Berlin Street hospital in Middletown for his annual check-up and to get an injection to help treat his allergies. Frenchies are unfortunately predisposed to developing allergies, which can cause chronic problems like itchiness, hives, and digestive upset. In Dozer’s case, he gets regular injections to help manage his symptoms and keep him comfortable. He’s a super friendly guy and was an excellent patient today!

Keep your pets safe from coyotes! Stella the Boxer is all smiles today, but earlier this month she survived a terrifying attack by a pack of coyotes.

Stella was brought to our Essex hospital after she was saved from a pack of six coyotes, which left her with extensive bite wounds on her hind legs. She quickly underwent surgery with Dr. Brienza to clean and close the lacerations. After some well-deserved rest and recovery, Stella came back to get her staples removed today and she is doing great! She’s all healed up and showing off that gorgeous Boxer smile, here with Georgia, Megan, Dr. Brienza, and Madison!

Coyote encounters aren’t uncommon, but Stella was fortunate to be a large dog and have someone to help chase off the pack. Coyotes are highly active this time of year due to their mating season and can be found in all towns in Connecticut, including urban and suburban areas. DEEP suggests the following to keep you and your pets safe:
• Keep dogs leashed and avoid areas where there’s been lots of coyote activity
• Do not leave dogs or cats outside unsupervised
• Hike with a friend or group when possible – chat or use bells so animals know you’re coming
• If approached by a coyote, keep your dog close to you and leave the area without turning your back
• Attempt to frighten coyotes by shouting, clapping, waving your arms or jacket, or throwing things: make yourself loud and intimidating

Scout says going to the veterinarian is fun - the doctors wear fun chew toys around their necks! Adorable Scout is a 13-week old Golden retriever puppy who visited Dr. Tipton in Marlborough for a puppy exam and vaccinations, including his rabies vaccine. All puppies love to chew, but goldens and other retriever breeds especially love to put everything they find into their mouths - including stethoscopes, apparently! Good work, Dr. Scout ❤

Say hello to one of our newest patients, Skye the Maine C**n kitten! She visited our Marlborough hospital for a check-up and vaccines with Dr. Audrey, but Dr. Tipton couldn't resist the chance to give this beautiful girl some love too! Skye weighed in at over 5lbs already, which isn't too surprising given that Maine C**ns are the largest domestic cat breed - males can reach over 20lbs. Maine C**ns originated from (you guessed it) the nearby state of Maine and are known for their large size, tufted ears, and beautiful long coats. We can already tell that Skye is going to be one gorgeous lady when she grows up!
