Highly pathologic avian influenza (H5N1), or bird flu, has been confirmed in wild birds in New Jersey within the past 30 days. The doctors and staff at NAEVS are monitoring the situation closely to ensure our patients are safe and well cared for.

To report sick or dead poultry, contact the NJ Department of Agriculture Division of Animal Health at 609-671-6400.

If you find sick or dead wild birds, do not handle them. Contact the NJ DEP Fish and Wildlife hotline at 1-877-927-6337.

Hello All. Over the last week or so, a medicine called Librela has been making the news and social media forums. This medicine is used to treat the chronic pain of arthritis in dogs. We have been offering the medicine at MAH over the last year that it has been available in the US. A number of our patients have been seeing improvement in their arthritis pain when given this medicine.

Like all medicines, there may be side effects. When a medicine is first tested, it is given to a relatively small number of study animals, and the side effects are noted. If these side effects are minimal in relation to the benefit of the medicine, it is given a license by the FDA to be used in the general population. Once millions of doses are administered all over the world, side effects may appear that were not seen in the original testing studies. It is then up to the FDA to decide if the medicine should still be used. At this point the FDA has not found the percentage of side effects reported to warrant removal of Librela from use.

We at MAH always strive to provide the safest and most efficacious treatments for your pets. Therefore, we will still provide Librela as a treatment for chronic arthritis pain in your dogs.

Did you know? November is Pet Diabetes Awareness Month! Here are some important facts to keep your furry friends healthy:

🔹 Diabetes in pets is more common than you think, affecting 1 in every 300 dogs and 1 in every 230 cats.
🔹 Symptoms to watch for: increased thirst, frequent urination, weight loss despite a good appetite, and lethargy.
🔹 Early detection is key! With proper management, including insulin therapy, a healthy diet, and regular vet visits, diabetic pets can lead happy lives.
