Farewell to Tuki: Our Beloved Feathered Friend

It is with a heavy heart and a deep sense of loss that we bid farewell to our beautiful feathered friend, Tuki. For over 15 wonderful years, Tuki graced the Potter League family with his unique charm, vibrant personality, and unwavering spirit. His journey with us began under tragic circumstances, as he came to our shelter as a pet safe pet after his former guardian experienced a devastating house fire, leaving Tuki without a home. With no timeline for repairs, his guardian made the difficult decision to sign him over to our care, and from that moment on, Tuki found his place in our hearts and our lives.

Tuki was no ordinary cockatiel. His spirited personality captivated many, winning over the hearts of some while instilling a respectful fear in others. Tuki was not for the faint of heart; he made you earn his love and affection. He had a special preference for women, despite everyone's best efforts to win him over. Over the years, a small circle of individuals became his trusted confidants, notably Jill and me, Kara. I had the immense privilege of becoming Tuki’s person, and in return, he became mine. Wrapped around his wing, his life became mine to protect, love, and care for, and I hope I did him justice.

Tuki loved the simple joys of life—gazing out the window, basking in the sun, and feeling the gentle breeze from the window next to his cage. His "apartment" was conveniently situated next to my desk, where he could watch the world go by and participate in all my Zoom calls with a chirp or a whistle. Music was his passion, and he would become visibly excited whenever new birds came into our care. I often imagined he was offering them reassurance, letting them know they were in good hands and that we would care for them until they found loving homes.

For the past 15 years, Tuki has been more than just a shelter mascot; he has been the voice of the Potter League for Animals. His pet advice column, published in the Newport Daily News, covered a wide array of topics, from the care of rabbits and dogs to cats and disaster preparedness. His advice was always timely, insightful, and appreciated by our readers. Tuki also played a vital role in our educational outreach, being a favorite among our younger volunteers. He frequently visited camps and classrooms, helping to educate young minds about animal care with his engaging presence. His sweet song brightened our days and cheered us on during even the most challenging times.

Tuki was never shy about expressing his opinions. He would bark like a dog, hiss at cats, nuzzle your neck, and whistle at you as you walked by. He was a light for all of us, his spirited nature and lively antics bringing joy and laughter to the Potter League.

As I pen these words, please know that Tuki cherished every visitor and friend who came into his life. I am profoundly grateful to all of you for being part of his journey and for the love and care you showed him. Fly high, my beautiful bird. Your memory will forever be etched in our hearts. You were so deeply loved, and you will be sorely missed.

We are thrilled to announce that this year’s Yappy Hour was a resounding success, setting new records for both attendance and fundraising in its 22-year history! Held at the historic Eisenhower House, the event was beautifully co-chaired by Dede Wilsey & John Peixinho, and presented in loving memory of Rosie Peixinho. Attendees had the wonderful opportunity to meet animals available for adoption from the Potter League and participated in a spirited ‘Paw Raise’ to support the Nuala Pell Animal Care Fund, raising over $400,000 in desperately needed funding this year.

The Nuala Pell Animal Care Fund ensures that homeless animals receive everything from basic care to treatment for serious medical issues. Thanks to these generous donors, the thousands of animals that walk through our doors every year will continue to receive veterinary care, surgery, extensive rehabilitation, and life-saving medications often required before they can be placed in a loving home.

We would also like to thank our Presenting Sponsor, Randal W. Poirier, ChFC, Financial Planner of Independence Financial Partners, our board of directors, our “Party Animals,” our volunteers & staff, and our in-kind sponsors Pranzi Tents & Events, Glorious Affairs Boutique Catering and Event Design, Wild Season Florals, Photography by Jessica Pohl, Lainey Dionne (musician), Two Bullyz Brand Development Beverage Consulting, VELO Vodka, and Perfection Valet Parking for their never-ending support and kindness.

We hope that you all had an incredible evening as we did. We were so grateful to be able to gather and see so many of our generous and wonderful friends. Thank you so much for making Yappy Hour a howling success!

P.S. This is just a sneak peek - More photos to come!

Kabuki is a delightful and resilient tabby looking for a loving home. She loves lounging around and watching the world from a cozy window perch. When she feels comfortable, Kabuki will flop into your hand and lean in for pets, making it easy to fall in love with her. She also enjoys being brushed, which is a wonderful way to bond with her.

Kabuki is an independent kitty who loves playing with toy wands and climbing cat trees. She enjoys affection on her own terms and can be incredibly sweet and loving when she's ready. Previously an outdoor cat, Kabuki has shown she can acclimate beautifully to indoor life and now relishes the comfort and safety it provides.

Kabuki's remarkable resilience is truly heartwarming, and we want her to enjoy the safe, comfortable life she deserves. Kabuki is FeLV+, so she should be an indoor-only cat and would thrive in a home where she can be the only cat or live with other FeLV+ cats.

If you are interested in giving Kabuki the loving home she deserves, please call us at (401) 846-8276 or visit our Animal Care and Adoption Center in Middletown, RI. Learn more at www.potterleague.org.

After a 2-day stay at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists, Tuki is now back home. During his time there, he received exceptional care from their amazing techs, veterinarians, and exotics specialist, Dr. Spelman.

While we’re not entirely sure what caused his respiratory distress, inappetence, loose stool, or weakness, the team was able to stabilize him. We've adjusted some of his medications and added a probiotic to his regimen. Currently, we’re focused on keeping him comfortable and will continue to monitor his appetite, water consumption, activity, strength, and droppings.

His x-ray revealed an enlarged liver, and his heart rate ranged from normal to slower, so right now, the working theories include liver disease or heart disease, although a tumor is also a possibility. The good news is that Tuki is stable, but we still don’t have all the answers we hoped for our sweet guy.

Thank you all for your well wishes and love sent his way. We’ll keep you updated on Tuki’s progress as we work through the next steps.

Friends,

Our beloved shelter mascot, Tuki the cockatiel, is currently receiving care at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists. Recently, we noticed he wasn’t his usual spunky self—he stopped eating, and his energy levels dropped, amongst some other symptoms. This morning, his condition worsened, and he began struggling to breathe.

At 16 years old, Tuki is a resilient little bird, and he’s already won over the hearts of the wonderful staff at Ocean State. We’ve been treating him for bacterial hepatitis, and he will be spending the night in an oxygen tank, where we’re hoping he can regain some strength as we try to figure out what is going on. Given his age and the fact that his current medications don’t seem to be helping, we’re not entirely sure what the prognosis will be, but we are keeping him comfortable and closely monitoring his condition.

Tuki has brought so much joy, love, and a bit of mischief to everyone who meets him. We wanted to share this update with all his friends and fans and ask for your positive thoughts and love for Tuki during this challenging time. We are doing everything we can to ensure he’s comfortable and cared for, and we’ll keep you posted on his progress.

Thank you for your support and for loving Tuki as much as we do. 💛🧡
