Junior Board Spotlight!

Hi! My name is Carolyn Merrill, I am a senior in high school. After I graduate, I will be attending Auburn University. I am involved in the horse rescue because I have always had a passion for horses, and I thought this was a great to be able to help out with such a great cause. I’ve been involved in the equestrian community for 8 years now, and I have had my own horse, Willow, for four years! After I graduate Auburn, I plan to go to vet school and hopefully become a large and small animal vet!

Update! We have 2 sponsors so far!

Ginger was diagnosed with Cushings on 12/2/24. We have started her on a new diet but she also requires daily medication to help control this disease which will cost a little over $100/ month. We really need help covering this cost. Do we have 10 friends that would sign up to donate $10/month to help cover Ginger’s medication? You can click “make this a monthly donation” so you don’t have to do it each month.

Please share. We could not continue our mission to help these horses without your help. If you prefer to donate through Venmo:

Tink got her hair braided and a gentle grooming today…. Meanwhile, the cats were being their usual crazy.

Tink is better today. Slow moving but getting around better than she has. If anyone would like to donate square bales, essential K ration balancer or Timothy pellets for her, you can message us and we will pick up. She also needs a mini fly mask. We haven’t been able to find one locally.

Busted out of the hospital!
Friday Update!
We have picked Tink up from the vet office. Her total bill was $992.57 so I have updated our goal to reflect that amount. So far we have raised $405.00. Thank you to each person that has donated!!
Update from the vet:
During our examination, we identified several dental issues, including loose teeth and one fractured tooth, part of which we were unable to extract due to the limitations of our equipment. We filed down the remaining piece to align it with the other teeth and reduce discomfort. Given Tink’s history and the extent of dental issues, I recommend considering a referral to Auburn for advanced dental extraction techniques.
We also addressed Tink’s hoof care, trimming overgrowth and treating severe thrush. The treatment included cleaning and applying silver cream to two feet with sloughed frogs, and re-bandaging with metronidazole powder during a re-examination under anesthesia. For the drier feet with deformities, we cleaned them without bandaging to allow for drying. Tink showed improved mobility the day after trimming, which is a positive sign.
Given the need for Tink to recover from the hoof issues before undergoing transport, we'll defer the dental care, including potential multiple extractions, and aim for a referral to Auburn in March or April.
Tink had X-rays, corrective hoof trims, vaccines, bloodwork, f***l, dewormer, coggins, and dental done this week. She still has 1 hoof wrapped and we will have to clean it and wrap it for the next week or two until it heals.

Update on Tink:

We dropped her off Monday AM for her vet day at Abbie Creek Animal Hospital thinking that we would pick her up later that same day but the vet said she needed to stay overnight. She did get her first initial hoof trim after xrays on Monday. She does have thrush in at least 2 feet so those were cleaned and she had all 4 feet and legs wrapped. Yesterday she was sore so we decided to give her a day of rest before doing her dental work which meant another night in the hospital. Today she is walking better and she had her dental done. We are estimating her to be in her early 20's and it has been a long time since she has had any vet care. She is missing 1 tooth, has a few that are a little loose and she had 1 fractured into 3 parts. 2 of the 3 parts were removed but that last piece did not want to come out so we are being referred to Auburn for her next procedure. (she will need to heal and rest so we will likely not take her until February or March) The vet said that her stifle issue was better today so hopefully the hoof trim is helping with that. They were able to unwrap 2 feet and they looked good enough to not need wrapping again but the other 2 needed another night of meds and wrapping. At this point, we have decided that the hour trailer ride would be too uncomfortable for her and it would be best for her to stay until Friday. She also had all of her vacccines done, bloodwork, a f***l, dewormed, and a coggins pulled. She also weighed in at a whole 130 pounds!

That being said, our vet bill will likely be more than we anticipated. So far we have raised $355 of the initial estimated cost of $823.51. If anyone could spare $5 or any donation to go towards her vet bill you can do so here: https://givebutter.com/WiregrassHorseRescue

I will update with photos once I get them from the vet. Please share our post and say some prayers for our sweet little Tink Tink.

Ginger and Scarlet went to the vet on Monday to have their dentals, exams and f***ls done. There was good news and sad news.
Good news: f***ls were clean- no worms. Yay!

Sad news:
Scarlet’s eye has continued to deteriorate and has been causing some problems for a few months so we have scheduled surgery to remove her eye in January. It is causing her some discomfort and she shows no sign of sight/ reactions in her eye exam. While this is sad, we believe we are doing the right thing to have it removed. We will set up a fundraiser to help cover that vet bill soon. Scarlet also has some wear on her teeth but we were able to get her in much better shape. She is a senior horse that had a bad mouth injury prior to coming to us but we are happy with her progress. She will need a dental check again in 6 months. Scarlet was also diagnosed with a slight heart murmur, which we will continue to monitor, though it is not expected to impact her quality of life significantly.

Ginger: Ginger’s teeth were not as bad as Scarlet’s but they were able to file down some areas and we are very happy with the outcome. In other news, Ginger was diagnosed with Cushings. This means she will start a new feeding regime and will require daily meds that will cost around $100/month. If anyone would like to help sponsor Ginger’s medication, we are looking for 10 people that would donate $10/month. You can sign up here: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=U5N4CPN6N8HCY

This month has been heavy on vet bills and I can say we have been extremely blessed with donations that covered the vet bill for Ginger and Scarlet which was $509.76. Thank you to each person that donated or shared. We simply could not help these horses without you.

As many of you know, our sweet friends at alaquaanimalrefuge recently took in 21 neglected horses. Sadly, two of them have crossed the rainbow bridge. While this is an ongoing investigation and the horses heal, they cannot be adopted out. However, Alaqua has a few horses that are available for adoption. You can click this link to see what horses they have and apply for adoption. Please keep these horses in your prayers along with the staff and volunteers that will be caring for them. We hope that these horses get justice!!!

We rescue, rehabilitate and care for many horses. Often, these horses available for adoption at alaqua animal refuge.

Tink's vet appointment has been scheduled for Monday, December 9! Please consider making a donation to this campaign to go towards her vet bill. Our estimate from the vet was around $823.00. You can donate on GiveButter and pay with paypal, venmo, etc. She will get a coggins, bloodwork, dental, vaccines, x-rays of her feet, and start her corrective trim to be followed up with our farrier. No donation is too small. Please share so we can get this girl healthy ASAP!
