Aqua training is a power and endurance training, without the weight of the rider. It also offers the possibility to train specific muscle groups. By moving in the water, horses are getting power training without the high pressure on their tendons and skeleton. Also the way of moving is different. By moving against the pressure of the water, horses start automatically using more of their back muscl

es and rear part muscles which gives them a stronger top line, more balance and coordination in all movements. The Treadmill allows the horse to be semi submerged in water while carrying out a cardio and muscular work out. The weight of the horse is minimised allowing the horse to move more freely. It allows controlled/ non-concussive supervised exercise. This allows exercise that still works extensively on the cardiovascular system whilst continuing to work on building and repairing strong tendon, ligaments and increasing muscle tone. It will increase cardiovascular activity, stride length, muscle tone and strength. It reduces the loading on painful or healing structures including, pain in joints with degenerative joint disease, muscle spasm, joint stiffness, and development of muscle atrophy.

**NEW WATER TREADMILL RESEARCH**

Great to work with an exciting group of researchers looking at the effect that water treadmill exercise has on equine locomotion.

Here is a new paper published in Journal of Equine Veterinary Science, titled “Effect of Water Depth on Limb and Back Kinematics in Horses Walking on a Treadmill”, authors: Carolyne Tranquille*, Jack Tacey, Victoria Walker Russell Mackechnie-Guire, Julie Ellis, Kathryn Nankervis, Richard Newton & Rachel Murray*.

For a limited time, this paper is available as Open Access using the link below. Additional papers are underway from this exciting area of research. Massive thanks to the Petplan Charitable Trust who funded this research.
