Lots of summer cookouts end with cool, refreshing watermelon. Watermelon is fun for pets; the high water content hydrates them and the glucose gives them energy. However, pets often swallow the seeds or eat the rind, and both can block the GI tract. To avoid GI blockages, cut the melon from the rind and remove the seeds before sharing this classic summer treat.

Leptospirosis is a dangerous, and potentially deadly, bacterial disease that can be harmful to both humans and animals.

Leptospirosis damages the kidneys and liver of dogs, humans and other animals, but is only rarely seen in cats. It is spread through the urine of infected dogs, squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, opossums, rodents and other common wildlife.

Vaccination is the best way to prevent leptospirosis. Your dog can become infected by drinking, swimming in or walking through contaminated water or soil, or by consuming wildlife such as chipmunks, rats and mice.

If you ever notice unusual symptoms in your pet, we are here to help.

Many animals, including dogs, cats, and humans, can be infected by intestinal parasites. Here are some common intestinal parasites and how they can affect animals:
Roundworms:
A common parasite in dogs and cats that lives in the intestines and eats partially digested food. Infected pets pass tiny eggs in their stool.
Giardia:
A microscopic, single-celled parasite that lives in the intestines of dogs and cats. It can cause severe gastrointestinal symptoms and disease if left untreated. Giardia can be spread through contaminated water, food, soil, and the f***s of infected pets.
Heartworm:
A parasitic worm that can infect pets through mosquito bites. The infected mosquito injects a larval stage of the worm into the pet's skin, where it matures over five to six months and travels to the heart and lungs.
Coccidia:
A protozoan parasite that infects the intestinal mucosa of both humans and animals. It has two phases in its life cycle, and can be found in the intestine as parasitic sporozoites or as free-living oocysts in the f***s of contaminated animals or humans.
Fleas:
Fleas can be a parasite in themselves, but they can also transmit intestinal worms, such as tapeworms, to dogs. If a dog accidentally ingests a flea while grooming, it can become infected with any tapeworm larvae in the flea's gut.
Toxocara canis:
An intestinal parasite of dogs, cats, and foxes. Infected animals shed eggs of the parasite in their f***s, and humans can accidentally ingest these eggs from the environment. This can lead to severe clinical consequences, such as brain damage and blindness.

Here are some guidelines for preventing intestinal parasite infection in pets:
Deworm your pet regularly as recommended by your veterinarian
Have f***l exams done on your pet's f***s 1-2 times a year
Don't allow your pets to eat raw meat
Practice good hygiene
Pick up pet waste daily and dispose of it properly
Wash all fruits and vegetables before eating
Keep pets flea-free

Blind Dog Day recognizes the courage, adaptability, and resilience of blind dogs, and the special bond they share with their owners. Blind animals can be trained to localize and follow sounds such as clicks and whistles. In a household with more than one pet, a blind pet will often rely on another animal in the household to lead the way.
