Service Dogs Skills During Bowling!-Here are a few examples of things we used/skills my dog needed to be successful: • Impulse control around food (even when I'm not looking)• Down stay in a distracting environment (with people walking all around, food, kids, etc)• Ignoring balls being thrown & pins falling (especially for those who LOVE playing with balls)• Unfazed and/or quick to recover by sudden noises such as clapping, balls hitting pins, balls coming up from machine, balls hitting floor, guard rails coming up, etc. • Focused from a distance on air scenting for potential alerts, falls, etc- Why did I not allow my service dog to come up to throw the ball? I personally think it's a unneeded risk of slipping, being hit by the ball, and many other potential injuries.
If I leave my vest...am I no longer able to go out?
Actually, you can still go into non-pet friendly places with your service dog's vest! The gear a dog wears does not make them a service dog. The ADA website states: "Because service animals are not required to wear vests, a dog that is wearing a vest is not necessarily a service animal. The dog still needs to be trained to perform a task for a person with a disability to be a service animal."
Today I took a different car than usual & forgot to bring a vest. So, Obsidian had to work naked while I ran in to grab an item. Was he any less of a service dog? Nope!
Has your dog worked "naked" before?

The first clip shows a black labrador wearing a royal blue service dog vest. The camera angle is taken from above the dog as he walks in a heel position. The text on screen reads: " WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU LEAVE YOUR SD'S VEST AT HOME?" with the Helping Howls Logo under it. Below that reads "ADA LAW INFO REEL"
The next clip shows the same dog wear no vest but still in heel position. The location of the video has changed from one store to another. The screen reads "NOTHING CHANGES! SERVICE DOGS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO WEAR ANY GEAR LABELING THEM AS A SD. VESTS & PATCHES DO NOT MAKE A SERVICE DOG...THEIR TASKS, DISABLED HANDLER, AND BEHAVIOR DO!"
The final clip is of the same dog in the same location also heeling then coming into a sit. The screen reads "Thanks for watching!" and then has the Helping Howls logo at the bottom.

Conditioning a Positive CER...
specifically to refrigerators & other motored things in store! By creating a new, positive CER- we'll condition Cheddar to have positive emotions when hearing these sounds instead of a fear reaction.
We helped change his previous feelings into positive feelings by:
-going at his pace
-playing games
-increasing arousal
-desensitization
and more!
However, the most important things were: using a force free approach & going at Cheddar's pace.
Keep in mind, this is still a work in progress, but he's made a HUGE improvement from just the beginning of his stay (which I have no videos of) around these things. In time, he'll continue to generalize these feelings & have a positive CER to all refrigerators & similar sounding machinery.
How did you help your dog create a positive CER?

I often tell people I take service dog training...slow
However, with most ADI programs as comparison I believe I'm right on track. Yet, when you compare with most plans of owner trainers, my timeline seems super slow.
This training session is teaching my puppy foundational skills for a future of neutrality, environmental stability, and fun! Yes, he makes mistakes...but those are learning opportunities along with him making those good choices. I'm not looking for outright obedience cues like a solid sit or complete focus on me- I want him to experience his environment & take it in without feeling the need to have a huge reaction etc. This is a new environment for him as well, so I'm super happy with how he did! While he did struggle with trying to go greet the passing person, he reoriented, and was happy to continue on with me (and not get stuck on the fact a person just passed etc).
What foundations did you & your puppy work on? Let me know if the comments!

How Can FlySwatters Change Your Training Game?
-Flyswatters can be great for puppies to learn targeting on as they are larger giving puppies more room for success when first learning
-Useful for when a more "push" movement is needed
-Great for dogs with flatter faces or trouble targeting a small target
-A target option for dogs who may see "ball" on a target stick rather than as a novel item
and more!
They are also widely available in stores with a lower price point compared to majority of target sticks. If you frequently use flyswatters in your house, I would use caution when first teaching this target as it may already have an emotional response attached to it. If that's the case, condition a new emotional response prior to using it as a target OR try something else.
Would you use a flyswatter? Why or Why not?

3 Games for Brain Breaks & Engagement
No not for either one separately...both together! I like these three games as they are quick, easy, and non disruptive (for the most part). It also allows me to not use something like a tug or toy in public later in training. These three games break up "boring" activities like heeling or standing in a line. They are also using the premack principle! However, I'd make sure your dog does indeed find these games fun, and not just another boring cue.
I made a note for the herders as I do not want you to get nipped/ encourage it if that's something your team is working on. Id also not play the chase game if your dog tends to vocalize, be unable to refocus, etc.
With that being said...practice these games in an easy environment first so that you'll know how they react before taking it into public.
Do you allow your dog to have brain breaks? What do you guys do?
Meet Serene & Prosperous at LHK "Smoky Quartz"!
Smoky is going to be training with our program! While his training will focus on service work...he'll also have the chance to experience other paths as well. Join us in Smoky's journey to finding his destiny & learning to be a helper dog.
We're so excited to embark on this journey! Give him a warm welcome in the comments!!

Full Video On Our Tiktok @helpinghunds !Being focused, under control, and responsive is a big part of what makes service dogs so great in public. That's why it's important to practice often! During this time I also want to practice decision making, and choosing to do the desired behavior. I believe that while corrections work...it's more important to me ( especially service dogs ) that their handler is more rewarding so a correction for basic behaviors isn't needed. My service dogs ( when fully trained ) should NOT need frequent, constant collar corrections when fully trained. If a fully trained service dog of mine is reliant on corrections and tools consistently for behaviors...we are going to want to reevaluate. I want to see decision making, handled focus, willingness, and more from a fully trained service dog without the constant need for aversive tools. This is one reason why you do not see a gentle leader in this video. While I do use it to accompany my heel training ( especially as an adolescent ) I also like practice in public without ( at pet friendly places tostart ) so we can eventually phase it out entirely. Pushing dogs too far too fast can cause them & you ( the handler ) to become reliant on tools as a way to bypass or speed up the foundation process. In the end, you may just be cheating your team out of a strong foundation. Tools like prongs, e collars, can indeed " level up" your dog training. BUT they should be used while or after creating a strong foundation.* If you use them while, take times like now to practice without them. Start to slowly phase it out, and become the most rewarding to your dog & reward for good decisions ( it takes patience, practice, repetition, and more ). Using it after? These tools can be used to tighten up the existing foundation to calibrate your dog further to exactly what you want & tighten up any loose ends before " training completion ". This isn't needed for every dog of course, and can be used ( as most things ar
