My farrier will probably kill me 🫣 but look at Smoke! She has relaxed so much! It was a non-tense feet trimming kind of day. Sometimes it’s the little things that matter most ❤️

Today was farrier day. Liz works them in their pasture. Everyone came running but Bart (foreground) and Buttons. It was like he was spying on us from behind the bushes to make sure the coast was clear before approaching 🤣 We kept telling him he wasn’t camouflaged that well 🤣 They eventually joined in!

Today my daughter helped me capture some memories. Sallie's breeder did not get photos before she left and she is growing so very fast. I wanted to be able to share with him so he would have these too. I still am in awe about how strong he stamped her. He is her, she is him. Yes the markings are not exact but to know them... it's undeniable. Side by side, I am struck by the likeness and the gift I have been given.

Time is short as we leave for Morgan Grand Nationals on Wednesday. I wanted to update those following along with Asher (HVK Oh My). I think finally we are on a great track and got some good answers to underlying issues. There is a long road ahead but we are ready to walk it with him. There is a dragon dying to burst out and be understood.
On Thursday we had our first ever appointment with an Equine Osteopath. For those that don't know the term: Equine Osteopathy is a drug free, manual therapy that aims to improve the mobility and function of the horse's skeleton, muscles, ligaments, joints and organs, – collectively known as the musculoskeletal system. It is a holistic approach involving an understanding of the problem and it's causes.
I have had a very hard time finding such a person. And this chance was the best opportunity. She was incredible and thorough. She went over every part, every joint and worked on him to help start the process of getting him back in balance. It was more than just treating the symptoms as they arose but getting to the root of the problem. We took SpiderMan along too because she had 2 open time slots. These two sessions proved so beneficial for any underlying problems or behaviors that I had been experiencing with no real solutions utilizing other methods between vet and chiropractic.
We have resourced many things and done treatments with Asher but nothing has really stopped the issue of his tail clamping against the crouper. So we have not driven him here. After two months, while his personality had started to flow, he still was not as forward willing. He came with an old scar on his right chest and above his right eye. A few years old that no one seemed to be aware of. As she went over his whole body it was found that he had trauma to his sacrum area. It was actually tilted back and down toward his abdomen rather than flat. This was the cause of his pain with the crouper. How it was possible he had been supposedly driving from March - July is not defined. There is assumption based on what he can't tell us. But what was most important is that Dr Bailey said she felt he would come around. This was indeed fixable...with time.
I will tell you yesterday and today he felt noticeably better...newer. It's hard to explain. He also looked less tight in his hips. He was at the back side of the paddock and saw me, I called his name, and he immediately lifted his head up and came running toward me whinnying. That's a noticeably different horse.
To work on him she did tranquilize. I will say I've seen nothing like it. She moved deep and a lot. And both Asher and SpiderMan I feel got immediate good results.
There are reasons to share this and why I will continue to update as he progresses;
1. If something feels wrong or off in your gut, trust it. Continue to look for the helpers and resources. YOU are your horses advocate and voice.
2. Your horse is NOT purposely trying to be an asshole...EVER. They are trying to tell you something is wrong. They are trying to communicate. LISTEN.
3. There are more resources these days to help find the answers. Most of the time it is going to be taking a deep breath and slowing down.
4. There are more Asher's and SpiderMan's out there. May there turn around success stories lead to changes needed for people to be better advocates for the horses welfare.
I'm excited for his future. At this point time is needed for his body to rehab up to where his brain wants it to be :)

Today was busier than expected but we added the saddle. We did some round pen work. She was a little taken by the feeling of the girth but she never did anything bad. It only made her forward and then she would be like...this is okay. She was really comfortable moving in the round pen...she is a beautiful mover. But when I added the bridle.... which she accepted the bit no problem... she got more nervous. More like a "ready to go" than anything else. So I took the bridle off. I did put weight in the stirrup. She again just stood at the step while I went through all the things...un bothered. I did not throw a leg over but I do feel she has 100% been sat on. How formally...TBD. I took her out for some grass and she just never understood "slowing down part" Like she could just relax and graze. It wasn't work work work...go go go.
So for many reasons, including the fact I leave for Morgan Grand National on Wednesday, we are just going to slow it down. She will just be a slow restart. I think she has been through a lot, especially in a short time. I don't think she's ever really just been able to relax and be one on one with a person. She has no clue what that is. BUT I find her incredibly willing to try and want to do that.
I am not typically a mare person... ironic cause I just bought a filly :P But this mare I really really like. She has a ton of untapped potential and I think in time you are going to see one incredible girl!
Till then you will have to live vicariously through my updates. She will be worth the wait!
And she had to have been an incredible mom because I did try to put her with Belinda and Sallie, however she claimed Sallie hard as if she was her own...that is the job she's known for so long so I don't blame her. But it will have to be noted on whoever adopts her that she may be a bit on the bossy side. We will see how that changes as she adapts to a small herd.
Smoke is beautiful, smart, kind, forward to the unknown but not mean. I truly think she is a beautiful diamond in the rough and I can't wait to see where this goes for her.

DNA matches are putting the pieces back together.
Connecting to lost identity and history.
Things that made them once valued, taken.
A simple piece of paper that can hold merit, worth, usefulness that can be left out of any future equation which can leave any animal minimized and depreciated.
Sad really how much power a piece of paper has...or lack of it.
Well Felix is actually....
Northview's Master Chief
(Heartland Master of Disguise x Oh Sincerely)
Foaled May 9, 2010
A friend did some digging and back in his day, 2015, he did some showing as a 4/5 yr old.
Not bad for first saying yes to a picture of a goat :P
Take a chance and repurpose! You don't have to risk it alone! There are breed groups who have already taken in, evaluated and have horses ready to move on to new homes! Felix (who may now have to be called Chief) was acquired through the American Saddlebred Legacy Foundation on one of their trips to PA.

HorseFeathers wants to introduce our timeshare hackney pony Felix! DNA is pending but he’s supposed to have papers, possibly shown and used in a lesson program. He is the kindest soul I’ve met in a while and everyone loves him! This should make next year’s Big D Show even more fun!
We found Felix through The American Saddlebred Legacy Foundation as a direct sales listing.
**he lost a front shoe so we didn’t do much, just tested the water. And casually looking for Hackney size tack 😝***

Will history repeat itself? ONLY if you take advantage of this opportunity!!! He's 6 yrs old and I am a true Legacy Viking's fan... it's him only better! There is more under the hood!
There are many horses to share from my trip to PA, however I'm going to start with a couple that are definite show prospects. They are priced this way. These horses were very well presented and there are good horseman behind them who recognize there is more talent there than to be wasted pulling a buggy down the road. This is prime opportunity for acquisition of new faces for season 2025. So if you are on the look out...pay attention!

CERTAINLY SUPERB

This gelding is free front and back...he definitely has more to give and it's all natural talent. He is still learning to use himself differently and has been too much for the road...no wonder! He is park prospect all the way!! He's incredible to watch...even better than the videos. I could not stop thinking about Legacy's Viking the whole time. There is NO park horse out there today like this gelding. And he's been under saddle! He has more work but he is ready for someone to take over and finish for season 2025!
Located in Peach Bottom PA
Contact 240-529-3066 for more information. I did see the horse and this is not a commission for me. You make the final deal. He is worth it!
He MOST definitely is ....Certainly Superb!! Just like his great granddad!!

For those wanting to follow along on Asher's (HVK Oh My) progress...
I hauled him in to a new veterinarian out in Stephenville, TX. She had experience with lameness, chiropractic and neuro, so I felt it was going to be worth the trip. And I brought two of his buddies along to get their teeth done so he wasn't alone. He actually didn't want to get on the trailer because I think he thought I was sending him off 🤦♀️ but he was convinced it was okay.
Asher has been slightly off but nothing conclusive pointing to any one thing directly. So when she checked acupuncture points he told us clearly. It was right front, left hind, sacrum, teeth, TMJ and gut.
We took xrays of a few views of his feet. He had minor bone spur in coffin joint along with some deterioration of bone. He lands heavier to the outside so that was the points of impact. And mild bowing of both coffin bones was apparent. This is usually things commonly found in performance show horses and it probably worsened while he was being prepped for the road work as he still had some type of show shoe package on and a longer than normal foot. All of this can hopefully be helped with different shoeing....which he got Wednesday. And honestly almost immediately there was a big change.
The next thing we looked at was gut. He did have a larger belly on arrival and a rubbed out tail. Because he was diagnosed with EPM early as a 2yr old, EPM doesn't go away, and they tend to be more prone to parasites if not on a routine worming regiment which we know in the last 6 months anyway that was not going to happen. As he is already on something for gut and ulcers, we opted to worm him thinking he may have a bot load.
Because EPM doesn't go away and can present during times of trauma or change...his environment changed many times because of the dealers...it was recommended to treat for EPM. Not that he has it but as a kind of body reset. This we had already started prior to the visit.
And then we got to his teeth, which he really needed done as he was getting ulcers on both sides of his back gums.
This is going to be a slow rehab for him. Changes in a positive direction are happening and his personality is starting to come through. He was more excited and alert there...more than he's shown in a while...and they really fell in love with him. It is good to see him start to come alive.
If you want to help support Asher's long term care please feel free to donate! We'd love the support!

He’s almost here! SSMF Gingerbread Man(Bazinga x DLMS Sudden Surprise)April 27, 201915h. Hello from Buttons
Hello Skurkis Family! I know you’re following our page for Buttons so I just wanted to give you a shout out from him!
Edited: sorry Facebook changes things
We had some dense fog this morning after a full night of rain the day before. As the sun broke it was cool to see all that “evaporation smoke “ as the ground warmed up. Geldings In The Mist 🤪
We are still a bit wet from yesterday’s rain, but first canters are always the best feeling! Great job Caroline!
Imagine being so afraid of giving the wrong answer you just “run” through life hoping you’ll please someone but missing all the lessons.
Seymour is definitely less afraid then when he came. Bad behavior out of fear is the most dangerous. Retraining a fearful horse is the hardest. It takes more time to rebuild that trust and confidence then it did to break it. His “safe spot “ still tends to be behind the contact. But I see progress every day.
He’s going to be cool but he’s not going to be available until we are sure he understands the expectations of a solid citizen.
This takes time for some. But they are worth the wait.
Trust the process.
