As a thoroughbred breeder, I hope some of my colleagues will find this research interesting. Now that the Kentucky Derby winner is in**ed so closely to Smart Strike, I fear more of us will be tempted to double up to close relatives.

"The sobering aspect of the study's conclusions is a strong correlation observed between inbreeding and Thoroughbreds that
never start in a race."
https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rspb.2022.0487

Small effective population sizes and active inbreeding can lead to inbreeding depression due to deleterious recessive mutations exposed in the homozygous state. The Thoroughbred racehorse has low levels of population genetic diversity, but the effects of ...

Sometimes it’s important for us to step back and just appreciate how lucky we are that horses allow us into their world. They teach us, move beyond our mistakes and misinformed ideas, bring us joy and a feeling of being part of something better than ourselves. They get us outside, teach us responsibility and empathy, and to put something before ourselves.

"At one point, when I had horses for Frank (Calabrese), I had about 50 horses just for him. That made a big difference.

On the flipside, I once went from 50 horses in my barn to only a pony. There was another time when I had no horses.

So, I've reinvented myself a few times." --Wayne Catalano, TDN

“Gainesway and Whisper Hill's third and final purchase together Tuesday was MISS STORMY D, a stakes winner this year in California. The 5-year-old Tapizar mare hammered at $500,000.

MISS STORMY D was bred in Kentucky by Lantern Hill Farm, Phil Needham, and Judy Needham out of the Mr. Greeley mare Miss Relentless, also the dam of stakes winner EVIL LYN.

The mare's third dam, Candy Girl, produced top sire and grade 1 winner Candy Ride and is also the third dam of grade 1 winner Tom's d'Etat.

Keith Brackpool previously purchased Miss Stormy D for $37,000 from Lantern Hill Farm at the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The mare went on to earn $273,040 from a 4-4-2 record in 18 starts with trainer Carla Gaines. “---The Blood Horse Daily
