As a thoroughbred breeder, I hope some of my colleagues will find this research interesting. Now that the Kentucky Derby winner is in**ed so closely to Smart Strike, I fear more of us will be tempted to double up to close relatives.

"The sobering aspect of the study's conclusions is a strong correlation observed between inbreeding and Thoroughbreds that
never start in a race."
https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rspb.2022.0487

Small effective population sizes and active inbreeding can lead to inbreeding depression due to deleterious recessive mutations exposed in the homozygous state. The Thoroughbred racehorse has low levels of population genetic diversity, but the effects of ...

YES.

Sometimes it’s important for us to step back and just appreciate how lucky we are that horses allow us into their world. They teach us, move beyond our mistakes and misinformed ideas, bring us joy and a feeling of being part of something better than ourselves. They get us outside, teach us responsibility and empathy, and to put something before ourselves.

"At one point, when I had horses for Frank (Calabrese), I had about 50 horses just for him. That made a big difference.

On the flipside, I once went from 50 horses in my barn to only a pony. There was another time when I had no horses.

So, I've reinvented myself a few times." --Wayne Catalano, TDN

“Gainesway and Whisper Hill's third and final purchase together Tuesday was MISS STORMY D, a stakes winner this year in California. The 5-year-old Tapizar mare hammered at $500,000.

MISS STORMY D was bred in Kentucky by Lantern Hill Farm, Phil Needham, and Judy Needham out of the Mr. Greeley mare Miss Relentless, also the dam of stakes winner EVIL LYN.

The mare's third dam, Candy Girl, produced top sire and grade 1 winner Candy Ride and is also the third dam of grade 1 winner Tom's d'Etat.

Keith Brackpool previously purchased Miss Stormy D for $37,000 from Lantern Hill Farm at the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The mare went on to earn $273,040 from a 4-4-2 record in 18 starts with trainer Carla Gaines. “---The Blood Horse Daily

BARNEGAT LIGHT!

Last night at Presque Isle, Barnegat Light (Summer Front-Wickapecko 18) led gate to wire and drew off to win by 6 1/2 in his first start since his maiden win there on July 6.

His Equibase Speed Figure for the mile test was 96.

Homebred Barney was overlooked by everyone in our 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale consignment, so he races in partnership with Blazing Meadows Farm.

Thanks to trainer Tim Hamm, jockey Scott Speith and everyone else on their team who gave this gelding a chance to shine for us.

True fact: the thoroughbred industry in Kentucky is disappearing right before our eyes.

According to Jockey Club numbers, foals born in Kentucky numbered 8,478 in 2010.

In just ten years, that number is down 23%, to just 6,495.

Farms everywhere are in decline with labor shortages and high land prices. Kentucky's horse farms attract people from all over the world, and we are THE global standard for excellence in the thoroughbred world.

If we want to see foals running in fields along Kentucky roads ten years from now, all of us need to contact our state representatives in support of Historical Horse Racing, Senate Bill 120, which was introduced yesterday in the Kentucky State Legislature.

You can find contact information for your representatives at this link: https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/findyourlegislator/findyourlegislator.html

Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale 2020: Median selling price was unchanged from 2019, at $25,000 for 2,286 horses through the ring.

For the average seller or buyer, the median is the single best indicator of the health of a market, especially when that number is achieved over ten days, and by offering over two thousand thoroughbreds of ALL types.

In a pandemic year, with vastly fewer buyers on site, this is a testament to the outstanding job Keeneland did with internet and telephone bidding, video promotion, and attention to detail from the auction stand. THANK YOU EVERYONE!
