Being gentle with a horse does not mean letting the horse push you around and place you in danger. Horses need to have ground manners. They need to stand reliably for the farrier and the veterinarian. They need to stand quietly while you are mounting or dismounting. They need to let you groom them, bridle them, saddle them without dancing around.

It is not that the horse is allowed free rein. Teaching basic manners, though, is a lot different from routinely smacking a horse around, yanking on the bit with rough hands, grinding on the horse in schooling sessions, or cranking the horse into draw reins or other leverage devices.

Part of being well trained is that the horse respects human boundaries, but the good trainers use only as much pressure as needed to create respect and only in situations that to do otherwise allows dangerous behavior.

Friday Funny!
You may get horse show anxiety, but your horse doesn’t have to!
Use Chill® & Chill Ultra™ to ease your horse’s show day jitters. 😬

Horsemanship has been defined as “Always, in an educated way, putting the best interests of the horse first.”

The “educated way” part had a lot to do with proximity to ponies and horses, whether as a barn rat at some stable, or as a kid with a horse or pony out the back door. Growing up feeding, mucking, turning out, bringing in, blanketing, holding for vet and farrier----.

In 1950 there were about 150 million people in the USA, and still lots of open land. Today I think it’s around 330 million, more than doubled, lots more urban growth, suburban sprawl, more roads, more shopping malls, hugely more traffic, riders living one place, horses taken care of miles away. Not all, but so different for so many, and if there’s ONE overarching reason for the decline in horsemanship that you hear so much about, in two words---POPULATION GROWTH.

This photo shows little kids on bikes and trikes, but picture it as only slightly older kids on ponies, heading out on Saturday morning, being told by Mom, “be home in time for supper.”

Those days are gone, except in some little rural pockets, and even out back of beyond, most back roads have speeding pickups, unaware of how unpredictable horses can be.
