With April being National Heartworm Awareness Month, we would like to share with you the story of this handsome boy named Scooby ❤️—

Scooby came to us on a Saturday morning in April of last year in bad shape; unable to walk, urinating what looked like straight blood and overall his body was in shock. His owners had recently rescued him after being abandoned and they had no idea that Scooby not only was positive for heart worms, but was in the life threatening end stages of heartworm disease known as Caval syndrome. The likelihood of Scooby living much longer without surgical intervention was slim to none. His owners wanted to give him every chance they could, so off to surgery we went. We were able to extract multiple adult heartworms directly from his jugular vein. Only time would tell if removing some of the worms clogging his heart and blood vessels would allow him to recuperate enough to begin heartworm treatment. He survived the first 24 hours, then 48 hours and he was beginning to become more lively! Heartworm treatment was started immediately to get rid of the adult heartworms and heartworm prevention was started to prevent transmission of the larvae via mosquito to any surrounding animals (The average mosquito can travel 3 MILES).

Over the course of the next 10 months, Scooby quickly became a clinic favorite as he came by for check up appointments and follow-ups regarding his congestive heart failure caused by the heartworms.

After a hard fought battle, Scooby grew more tired each day as unfortunately the damage to the heart by heartworms is irreversible; his parents said goodbye to Scooby this February. They wanted to share his story to let people know that heartworms are preventable by keeping your pet on heartworm preventatives year round and testing routinely.

We would love to talk to you about heartworm testing and prevention at your next appointment❤️

Did you know we offer a "chill" protocol for pets who have difficulty tolerating vet visits because of serious fear or anxiety? We believe it is much better to plan in advance with pre-meds than to force a pet to undergo an experience that may only worsen their anxiety.
