Why should you get your dog tested for heartworm and tick borne diseases?
Your pet should be 4dx snap tested (heartworm/lyme test) once per year at least. By making this a habit it allows your veterinarian to catch any positive detection and treat your pet as needed. These vector borne diseases can be deadly especially if they’re left untreated. Many pet parents feel they don’t need to test for things if their pet is not showing any signs or symptoms. However, this is not always the case. Proactive testing is very beneficial because some of these diseases can infect your pet without any signs of symptoms. In addition to annual 4dx snap testing it is always a good idea to have regular blood work done on your pet before he or she is having health issues because this will check how their internal organs are functioning. Early detection and treatment are always the goal of preventative care.
So what does it test for?
Heartworm
Has been found in dogs all across the United States.. It is spread by mosquitoes. While heartworm is treatable and preventable, it is something that is serious and can become fatal. The sooner you start treatment the better for your dog’s health.

Lyme disease
Is transmitted through ticks. If Lyme disease is left undetected and untreated Lyme can also become damaging. Common health issues include limping, being lethargic, lack of eating, and depression. Most people are not aware of the internal damage it can cause their pets. More serious issues from Lyme include kidney damage and rarely heart and nervous system disease.

Ehrlichia
Is an infection of your pet’s white blood cells. This affects the bone marrow function, including the production of white blood cells. Symptoms can include; loss of appetite, depression, lack of energy, runny eyes, runny nose, spontaneous nose bleeds, joint pain and lameness.

Anaplasmosis
Clinical signs include not wanting to move, lethargy, fever, anorexia, and muscle pain.

❓Did you know that up to 30% of aged horses may be diagnosed with Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID, also known as equine Cushing’s) in their lifetime? This disease brings many challenges with senior horse care to both horse owners and veterinarians. 🐴

🔬 Researchers at the University of Minnesota and University of Florida are motivated to better understand this disease through investigating the genetics associated with PPID risk and pergolide response in horses. 🧬

👉 Do you have a horse being treated for PPID? We could use your help! In order to properly answer the genetic questions surrounding disease risk and drug response, we are continuing to enroll horses with PPID (diagnosed by a veterinarian) that are being treated with pergolide.

🔗 Please check out our website to learn how you can enroll in this study and help us to help the horses you love! We are excited about this project and its potential impact to improve quality of life in many senior horses. ⬇🐴💖

Why is Dental care so important for our pets?

Dental health is a very important part of your pet’s overall health, and dental problems can cause, or be caused by, other health problems.
Periodontal disease is the most common dental condition in dogs and cats – by the time your pet is 3 years old, he or she will very likely have some early evidence of periodontal disease, which will worsen as your pet grows older if effective preventive measures aren’t taken. Early detection and treatment are critical, because advanced periodontal disease can cause severe problems and pain for your pet. Periodontal disease doesn’t just affect your pet’s mouth. Other health problems found in association with periodontal disease include kidney, liver, and heart muscle changes.
It starts with plaque that hardens into tartar. Tartar above the gumline can often easily be seen and removed, but plaque and tartar below the gumline is damaging and sets the stage for infection and damage to the jawbone and the tissues that connect the tooth to the jawbone.
