Kurt and I had the privilege to keep this gelding late this summer into fall for my Aunt Shelly and Uncle Mike Mattfeldt of Worden, Montana. It was our pleasure to swing a leg over and put some seasoning on this long 4 coming 5 year old AQHA gelding. SKIPPERS SMOKE by SKIPPERS SHY DOC X IKES CLASSIC CAMEO (Sun Frost bred mare) This horse was started right, with his first rides put on by my 74 year old Cowboy Uncle. Smoke is gentle, willing and knows how move his feet. Always wants to please and likes to work a cow. He saw big miles and big country with Kurt. Kurt roped and doctored yearlings with Smoke and exposed him to working the alley, sorting, and loading trucks. Started right with a solid foundation. One of the unfortunate conditions of Quarter horse breeding is PSSM or ESPM. This this muscle disease is a condition that can be managed through diet and mild exercise. Treatment is always a good tool to help heal muscle damage and help the muscle metabolize the starch, sugar and enable recovery.

We try our best to match the horse to the potential owner. I believe we did just that with Chico. This horse is a hand and will be a good asset to Ty Jones and his family on their ranch here in Eastern Montana.

We have a handy broke Pitzer bred gelding looking for his next Cowboy or Cowgirl to train. This gelding would be a great step up horse for a kid who's becoming horse savy and ready to graduate from the babysitter.
This gelding has some age, he's 23 years young and 16H tall. He's not ready for retirement and still has plenty of good years and legs left to teach another youngster. This guy knows a branding pen, will put you where you need to throw a loop and be safe for youngster to learn on. No maintenance required, he winters well. Just needs his teeth done every year. Our oldest has left home, our middle has essentially taken over my mare and our youngest is not ready to step up to this guy level yet.
Good home is a must!! We have valued the caliber of this horse and want to see another cowboy or cowgirl go on and learn from a master.

Beautiful July morning for a little branding! Temperature this morning wasn't too bad... Not too hot... yet! Summers coming...
Calves look outstanding!!

Chico making light work dragging these calves to the fire. Man this horse likes to work! We are proud he's packing our brand. We bred, started and raised him to be a hand.

Mares o***y

I worked on a mare last week that had a restriction in her left o***y. She presented as a ‘dragon’. What some would call typical mare behaviour. Restriction on her L1-4 on the left side tells me there is a visceral mobility issue.
She was so sore and tight in general that just having the cervix and uterus gently picked up during her re**al palpation, her back muscles on the left side would contract and she would almost buckle. Left o***y was all twisted up and hidden in the fascial tissue. Slowly and gently the tissue is mobilized.
Two days later I went back to re-examine the mare. “This is a completely different horse” She was soft, head held lower, calmer demeanor. Her lumbar spine was mobile, and muscle tone along the back was not tight and angry like before.
The mare was much happier to deal with too.
Take home message? The moody mare behaviour is not normal, and it’s not just cysts and inflammation that cause issues in mares, the mobility also needs to be checked.

This horse made me second guess myself at least 4 times... but had to take my own advise... could not figure out why he was packing three legged lame on a hind leg. Dropped him at the Vet... I wanted xrays cuz he just wasn't giving me any info on my mental check list. But still very, very, dragging his hind leg lame... very lame... night before we drop him off I said... I'm gonna be really really annoyed if this ends up being JUST an abscess... well guess what!! 🙄
My vet hit one in his toe. My husband was there during the exam and said he's got a spot here on his coronet that feels iffy... well he blew top and bottom. Finally standing on his leg and not dragging it... progress... but seriously I thought he broke his leg for the way he was walking and dragging it. Horses... seriously!!

This is why we ride our mares before they go to the broodmare band. This is our "proven" criteria for our program. We know what type of citizen their c**ts should be based on how their mothers worked.
My good mare Sally was retired to the broodmare band 4 years ago. Kurt wanted to give our young horses a break today as they have been working a feedlot all winter. He asked if he could pull Sally in and go check our pairs and for any new calves... I said go easy... she hasn't been rode for 4 years, she's a little flabby from raising a c**t last year and is showing a little bit with her next late c**t.
She stepped off like an old broke horse should... that is why she retired to the broodmare band, she proved herself for years... and today she proved herself again.
