Today our shelter babies enjoyed a magical afternoon of fairytales read aloud by Spirit Lake High School seniors from Mrs. Toews’ Children’s Literature class. The kitties curled up like royalty in their kingdoms while a very good pup listened just as intently.

The students brought stories filled with castles dragons and happily ever afters and our animals seemed to think it was just purrfect. As one wise author once said a reader lives a thousand lives before he dies and thanks to these students our animals lived a few extra today.

A huge thank you to these wonderful students for showing that reading to animals is no tall tale. With a little imagination and a lot of love they all lived happily fur-ever after.

🎉 We Did It ~ Clear The Shelters 2025 Wrap-Up! 🐾

With August officially wrapped, we’re thrilled to share the incredible impact Humane Society of Northwest Iowa made during our participation in this year’s campaign! Thanks to the compassion and support of our community, 10 animals found loving homes throughout the month:

📅 Week 1 (8/1 – 8/3): 0 adoptions
📅 Week 2 (8/4 – 8/10): 1 adoption
📅 Week 3 (8/11 – 8/17): 3 adoptions
📅 Week 4 (8/18 – 8/24): 2 adoptions
📅 Week 5 (8/25 – 9/1): 4 adoptions

Each adoption is a story of second chances, and one in particular touched our hearts deeply.

💛 Meet Cali (formerly Sunny Dee)
When Skylor lost her old man, Duke, back in April, her heart was shattered. After many wonderful years together, the silence he left behind was overwhelming. Then she met Sunny Dee, also known as Brisket, at our shelter. Sunny’s playful spirit and gentle love brought warmth back into Skylor’s heart, and together with her fiancé they are starting a new chapter. Sunny Dee, now Cali has found her forever home, and Skylor has found healing in a new best friend.

That’s the power of adoption. 🐶❤️

‼️WOW! What a week it has been for adoptions!‼️

Hey everyone! Sorry we’re a little late to the party, but we’ve got some good news!! 🤗🥳

In the past 5 days, we’ve been able to send 4 of our babies home with their new families!! Our hearts are swelling with joy and excitement that we were able to be a part of their journey to living their best lives!!

Thank you ALL for choosing adoption and giving these adorably sweet souls the homes they deserve!

**UPDATE**

Hutch is now home!!!

Duke, the great dane, has been found! There is still no sign of Hutch, so please be on the look out!!

🚨MISSING DOGS🚨

These 2 babies got out yesterday in Peterson IA around noon. Hutch is a 9 month old great Pyrenees mix and Duke is an adult great Dane mix. They do not have collars on but are very friendly and will come when called! If you see them please contact us at the humane society so we can let their family know!n
