April 27th marks World Veterinary Day and Dr. Smith and Dr. Laura were fortunate to be involved in Boehringer Ingelheim campaign to celebrate and acknowledge the relentless dedication, the genuine compassion, and the scientific know-how it takes to work as a veterinarian.

Spring Mills would like to thank all of our loyal and wonderful clients, as the profession wouldn’t be possible without all of you.

Please feel free to enjoy and share the video as you celebrate World Veterinary Day!

Every day, equine veterinarians dedicate themselves fully to the care of horses. Yet, our recent survey with Kynetec reveals that nearly one in three equine ...

To our clients, friends and colleagues:

I have decided to list my property for sale. I want to assure you that we at Spring Mills Veterinary Hospital will continue to serve you and your pets and large animals.
My plan is either to stay here in our current location in Holland Township or to relocate to a nearby facility.
The health and well-being of your animals has always been my priority. I hope you will continue to trust their care to me and my team at Spring Mills.

Thank you,
Suzanne Smith, VMD

Who is looking for a furry new friend?
Betty is an approximately 1.5-2 year old female cat. She is spayed,
dewormed, and fully vaccinated! She’s a sweet girl who has two
different colored eyes. She takes a bit to warm up to
new people, but when she does, she’s a silly, loving girl. She is
fearful of dogs, so she would do best in a cat only home. She should be an indoor only cat.

Please call the office or send us a message if you think Betty would be a good fit for your family!
If you are not a current client, we will need a reference from your veterinarian.

We wanted to let you all know about an upcoming change in our hospital. We are sad to inform you that Dr. D will be leaving our practice at the end of the year. Given this, we will no longer be able to accommodate exotics and chickens at this time. Other clinics in the area that are known to see these include Quakertown Veterinary Clinic (PA) and Belle Mead Animal Hospital (NJ).

To our valued clients and patients,

I am writing to inform you that I have made the difficult decision to leave Spring Mills Veterinary Hospital effective December 31st of this year. This was not a decision that I made light-heartedly. After 14 years working here, from starting as a kennel assistant when I was 14, to return as a veterinarian, this place is a second home to me. Though it will be difficult for me to leave this wonderful practice and all of you, it is time for me to pursue other growth opportunities so I may reach my professional goals and have more time with my family.

It is with sadness and excitement that I share this with you. It has been a privilege to care for your pets and one I will think about always. One of the reasons I entered veterinary medicine was because of my love for animals and the wonderful owners that you all are. So, thank you for being such amazing owners. I have met many wonderful people during my time here and will truly miss my interactions with my patients and clients.

I hope to be able to say ‘goodbye’ to many of you before I go, but if I miss you, consider this my ‘thank you’ for all that you and your wonderful pets have given me.

Best,
Dr D

Dena Castellani, DVM

Attention Horse Owners:
There have been confirmed reports of West Nile virus (WNV) present in horses in New Jersey, New York and surrounding areas. WNV is a mosquito borne virus that infects both horses and humans and clinical signs in horses can range from asymptomatic or mild flu-like symptoms to neurologic presentation with clinical signs such as incoordination, falling, muscle tremors, weakness, and occasionally the inability to stand. Older horses are often more severely affected than younger horses and there is no specific treatment for WNV besides supportive care. Horses can recover but often have long term effects such as behavioral or gait abnormalities. Prevention includes a yearly vaccination and to further protect your horses, good mosquito control practices should be set in place including removal of all standing water.
If you have not yet vaccinated your horse for West Nile this year, please call your veterinarian to schedule.

ADOPTED! 🎉
Meet Tuna!
Tuna is a young female kitty who found her way to us. She is felv/fiv/hw negative. Since coming to us, she has been spayed and vaccinated. She is extremely sweet, and enjoys being pet and "making biscuits" with her paws.
We are looking for an indoor only home. Must be able to provide veterinary reference. (Or if you are an existing client, have pets who are up to date).

We thought everyone deserved a nice feel good Friday story.
Earlier this season, Dr. Laura was asked to do the breeding work on a mare who had an extensive history and was on her absolute last chance to get pregnant. Wihopa’s story started in 2020 with a stifle injury requiring extensive time off which led to her breeding career starting in 2021. Cultured clean and uterus looking great, Wihopa was bred to a thoroughbred stallion and didn’t take. Her owner then switched Wihopa’s stallion 3 additional times with no success with any of them. In 2022, Wihopa was sent to Penn’s New Bolton center where she was cultured, biopsied, and had her oviducts flushed. After the visit, she was bred 3 times with 2 different stallions and again did not take. In 2023, she was then bred earlier in the year and did not take, which finally led her to ship in and stay with Dr. Laura for one last try. Her cycle was managed and Wihopa was bred and sent home with everyone’s fingers crossed. On June 7th, she was scanned, and we got the news that after three long years Wihopa was finally pregnant. Pictured is the lovely mare herself and a picture of her embryo from her heartbeat scan, which was nice and strong. We hope to see Wihopa’s foal late next spring!

For any reproductive needs, please feel free to contact the office!
