This small, rare dwarf rainbowfish hails from Western Australia. Discovered and collected in the 1980s from the Prince Regent River system by Dr. Gerald R. Allen, these iconic little fish have always been a crowd pleaser for their diminutive size and iridescent blue color scheme. Larger adult specimens topping out at 2.75 inches will exhibit a permanent gold-orange nuptial band that does not stop glowing even after breeding sessions.

Melanotaenia pygmaea are undemanding when it comes to feeding as they readily accept most dried prepared foods small enough to fit in their mouths. However, optimal breeding success can be achieved by providing high quality frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp or newly hatched Artemia nauplii. For best displays and coloration as well as overall health of specimens, good water quality is paramount. Pygmy Rainbowfish can thrive in an array of water hardness and pH.

A gem of the Aquarium hobby, this bright little Hypancistrus was and still is a holy grail species that is STILL highly sought after by hobbyists all over the world! Named for the black and white striping pattern along their bodies, these zebra plecos will make an eye-catching addition to any tank, granted you keep the temperature to their liking, high 70s and up. Being a Hypancistrus, the Zebra Pleco will appreciate high protein in their diet and clean, oxygenated water so ample surface agitation and water changes are recommended for providing long term care for these fish. Spawning will occur with males trapping females in caves until eggs are released, but this activity only occurs in sexually mature specimens that are of at least 2 years of age.

Moonlight Aquatics New inventory 8/10/2024 our biggest shipment of the month we got about 9 box worth of fish. Alot of restock on popluar items such as Male Betta, Corydoras, Goby, snails and much more. For our local customers if you are looking for male betta now is your chance as we got some really nice ones in. The Platinum Red tail Guppy has also been really nice these are bred in neutral water so they will do really well without hard water. Our website will be updated within the next 24 hours. Formerly called “sp. Sparkle” Rainbowfish from tannin-stained “Kali Jakora,” this smaller fish thrives in soft acidic conditions but has been acclimated and adjusted to neutral water parameters similar to the other Bird’s Head Peninsula Melanotaenia species or the Paracheirodon species from South America.

Being a rainbowfish, Melanotaenia jakora will readily accept flake foods, micro pellets, frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp as well as all live miceocrustaceans. Just like other rainbows, adequate and quality feedings will condition mature fish to spawn and lay eggs on plants, in mosses and in yard spawning mops, with eggs hatching in 7-14 days given proper incubation techniques are employed.

Topping out at 2.5-3” in captivity, this species can do well in tanks smaller than 3ft in length and puts on an electrifying display when they are well cared for and properly maintained, showing off iridescent blues and electric whites over a grey-pink base color as well as hints of pink in the tail.

This fish was a relatively new discovery by Gary Lange and Johannes Graf’s collecting team and this fish was officially described in late 2023 by Johannes Graf. The description can be found by signing up with ANGFA (Australia & New Guinea Fishes Association - a group dedicated to aquatic husbandry of fish from that region) and accessing their Fishes of Sahul magazine.

We got very limited amount of these available around 2” they have been acclimating for over 2 weeks at the store and ready to be shipped as soon as tomorrow.
