Bo Peep, the goat we didn’t know we needed. She is an Angora goat, beautiful and ridiculously fluffy. Bo Peep was one of 5 goats that were rehomed and renamed in our largest single adoption ever. She is not very friendly yet, but we are working on that with snacks. She gets along great with the rest of the herd and has settled in quite nicely.

Zuko, our oldest & largest goat is doing his part for the fall clean up here at The Capra Farm Goat Rescue. He is rather mild mannered, for a goat, and likes to eat without fighting. When he's topping 200 pounds, we agree!

Billy is an Oberhasli mix and half -brother to Frannie. These two are another pair that we re-homed from a neighbor. Billy and Frannie were both bottle fed as babies and are ridiculously friendly. If Billy doesn’t get enough attention, he has been known to give a little Goat Tap to let you know he wants more scratches.
Billy is a Very Helpful goat regardless of the project. Here we see him with work gloves on. Safety first!!

Bandit is an Alpine mix and is a re-homed goats from one of our neighbors. He wasn’t very social to us at first, but handfuls of sunflowers seeds brought him around. When you enter the pen nowadays, he’s one of the Official Greeters. If you’re not bringing snacks, he’ll still take a petting.

Odin! Balders brother. Of the four baby goats he's the most mellow. Of course for a Nubian that still puts him at 11 on a regular goat scale. Once the sun came out he and his brother spent the day in their temporary pen out in the grass.

Balder is one of two Nubians bought from JDF Acres. They were Michelle Yourth birthday present this year. A month ago, Balder got into a fight with a hog fence and broke his leg in two places. The first cast he had was one with pins in it to keep his leg in place. The new cast, which he got last week, stays on for 2 weeks as he finishes healing. Balder is confined to a smaller pen in the barn as well as a small pen we constructed outside for him outside so he can still graze and get some sunshine.
As I was running chores in the ATV he was complaining loudly. So I pulled over so he could have his first driving lesson.

Pearl. The eldest of Dory’s triplets. The goat with the perfect eyebrows. Despite being one of our shortest goats, she is one of our best jumpers. One of her daring escape plans involved a piece of concrete that was about a foot tall. She ran at the fence full speed, hopped on the concrete and then right over the fence. I swear she bleated “PARKOUR!!” as she flew gracefully over the fence, legs tucked up tight, like a graceful fluffy cloud.

Nemo was originally named, along with his siblings, after Pixar characters since their mother was named Dory. As he got older and bigger and still wanted to be a lap goat, we extended his name to “Nemo Pettin”. He is the middle child and thus, needs the most attention. It doesn’t matter that they were all born within 30 minutes of each other.

Big Mouth Bailey, the youngest of the triplets. As the youngest, she likes to be ‘herd’. Their mother, Dory, passed away suddenly when they were 6 weeks old, so Anna took over as surrogate mom. The triplets were bottle fed from then on as Anna didn’t have any milk. The triplets live in the pen with the rest of the herd while Anna sleeps in the barn due to her frostbitten legs. When Anna comes out of the barn on sunny days, all three yell excitedly and run over to her for cuddles and fighting. Since their mother was named Dory, the triplets are named after characters from Finding Dory.

Arwen & Eowyn are our two Great Pyrenees that we got from Wakatomica Creek Farm. These sisters are a bonded pair and completely inseparable. They spend their days joyously barking at everything and chewing on each other. Even when they are running at full speed across a field they try to bite and trip each other. As the protectors of the herd, they are named after two strong female warriors from the Lord of the Rings.

Rosie
Rosie is a Boer goat and small for her breed. She is the definition of Tiny But Mighty, she will fight any goat regardless of size. This attitude is why we named her after Rosie Gamgee, wife of Samwise, from the Lord of the Rings novels. Rosie is too tiny to kid safely so we agreed to take her in from one of our friends who is a Boer goat breeder.

Legolas
Half Boer, half Myotonic Legolas is the leader of the fellowship, small f. He’s somewhat shy, so will get just close enough to take snacks from your hands, but not close enough for you to cuddle him. Yet.

Gandalf
Gandalf is the brother of Aragorn. Funny story about Gandalf. A day or two after we picked up the puppies & goats, one of our sons came by to see them. He opened up the door, gave a big friendly “Well hello new goats!!” and Gandalf fainted. “LITTLE BUDDY! LITTLE BUDDY! ARE YOU OK!?” Apparently, we neglected to tell our son that two of the new goats were Myotonic.
Shout out to Mary Marshall of Wakatomica Creek Farm. Provider of goats & Great Pyrenees!

Aragorn
Aragorn is one of the three goats that we picked up when we went to Ohio to get our Great Pyrenees Arwen & Eowyn. He’s a myotonic goat but is terrible at fainting. If you have sunflower seeds, he’ll be your friend. He’s best friends with his brother Gandalf, Legolas and Rosie. Aka: The fellowship. Small ‘f’ since they’re some of our tiniest goats.

Anna
We'd call it a Goat A Day, but that puts too much pressure on us to think up 44 clever goat quips in a row. However, we will be going through ALL the goats. Plus the dogs & the cats.
Our Social Media Star, the diva herself. Anna! Anna is a Boer goat that was born during the polar vortex of 2015. Her owners didn't know when she was being born and she ended up suffering from frostbite to her back legs and ears because of it. https://www.ydr.com/picture-gallery/news/2020/07/30/photos-goat-four-prosthetic-legs-surrogate-mother/5530600002/

"Hey guys, Uber Eats is here! Who's got money?"
Appa, the leader of the herd. He is a LaMancha and yes his ears are supposed to look like that. Appa weighs about 165 pounds putting him in our top 5 Big Goats. He has yet to meet a snack or food he doesn't like.

We are starting our Goat Advent Calendar with a double feature!

To start with we have Zuko. Zuko is a Toggenburg and is our second largest goat weighing in at 205 pounds. In this video, from April 2021, we were bringing him home from New Bolton. We stopped by Panera bread for lunch and got Zuko a fruit salad and a garden salad. While in the parking lot feeding him, two different people asked if they could have a picture with him. We were also asked "Why do you have a goat in your minivan?" I shrugged "It's Pennsylvania, is it really that surprising?"

Continuing with our brothers we have numbers 9 & 10 Sokka and Ty Lee. They are also a cross between a Lamancha and Nigerian Dwarf. These brothers were born during the winter and spent 3 months in our kitchen. They get the long “pants” from their father who was a long haired Lamancha. These boys’ weight 120 & 138 pounds. When you stand still, they will both lay down at your feet. 🥰

Numbers 7 & 8 are Ozai and Zhao: These brothers are a cross between a Lamancha and Nigerian Dwarf Goat. We bought them from a breeder who really did not handle them too much. When they arrived at 3 months old, they did not like any human contact. It took a very long time to gain their trust and be able to have them come over to be pet. Now they are first in line for cuddles.

Gimli is our sixth goat and a red Boer. He is the last of the auction group that was destined for the slaughterhouse. Gimli is a big fan of using you as a scratching post and if you stand still, he will come over and rub his head on you. Weighing in at 135 pounds you know when he wants attention.

Our fifth goat and Pippins best friend, Frodo. Frodo is also a boer / Nubian mix, but more Nubian. Frodo came from the same farm as Pippin and they are inseparable. When Frodo was a baby, he had the most adorable big ears! Weighting at 167 lbs he has grown into those ears! When you stop petting Frodo, he will start pawing at you to get your attention.

Our fourth goat is Pippin! Pippin is a mix of Nubian and Boer goat and weights 160 pounds. He was an auction goat we bought (with a few others) from a farmer and was destined to be sent to the slaughterhouse once he hit a targeted weight. At only a few months of age, Pippin, who likes to share, shared his orf which quickly spread to all our other goats. At the time we had 14. When Pippin goes to sleep, he often “moans” to himself which sounds like he is snoring. You can always find him with his best friend (of course) Frodo. 🐐🥰

Our third goat is our biggest Bumi (nicknamed Baby Nader)! Bumi is a Nubian and our largest goat. Despite his 225-pound size, he is a big softie. I bought Bumi from a responsible breeder and he joined my original group of 3 becoming Appa’s best friend. Like all Nubian’s Bumi is very loud and tells you when he wants your attention! When he was younger, he would have “temper tantrums” throwing himself on the ground, shaking and yelling. Wherever Bumi lay’s down you are sure to see at least 3 goats laying right beside him. 🥰

Our second goat is Zuko (nicknamed TT). He is a Toggenberg and part of the original group. Zuko has had an interesting medical history and is a New Bolton Center frequent flyer. In the last year Zuko donated blood with a transfusion helped save one of our other goats who was anemic and suffering from a severe case of worms. Being one of our cleverer goats, Zuko broke into the chicken feed and spent 5 days at New Bolton having his rumen contents transfaunated due to severe acidosis. While there he was diagnosed with a never seen in goat’s bacterial infection which caused small polyps along his sinus cavity. New Bolton Animal Hospital was able to surgically remove only a few of these polyps. After nearly two months on antibiotics, he no longer has daily nose bleeds. Returning to New Bolton spent 2 weeks at New Bolton for a CAT scan to see if the polyps spread to his lungs and was discovered to have non symptomatic pneumonia. Other then coming home with a “mohawk” Zuko is doing fine! (The first pic is from one of his trips to New Bolton)

Good morning! Here's Appa! Appa is a Lamancha and part of the first group of auction goats we bought from a farm in 2014. Appa was about two weeks old and not in great shape. He was unable to move his back legs properly and would “hop” to get around. After dealing with the farmer for two days, we had the Vet out and he said Appa was very ill with an infection and fever. The Vet was not sure if his leg issues were something that could be fixed or congenital. For us, it did not matter. Once Appa was well, we would slowly stretch his back legs and installed ramps to help him get around. It took a few months, but Appa now walks normally and is one of our best jumpers! Having Appa inspired me initially adopt male goats who were unbreedable and would wind up at the slaughterhouse. Thus, the building blocks of the Capra Farm were born. We named our Farm Capra which means Goat in Italian. 🐐🥰
