Over the past week, Bodee has taken her new skills up a notch! We’ve been taking trips to the local parks for more exposure, sometimes surprised by the type of distractions we find, but she is handling the challenges with ease.
Now that she has a better understanding on how to handle her big feelings about other dogs, we’ve had the opportunity to practice her obedience behaviors around them in a closer proximity. Her initial response to other dogs was an explosive reaction, but through these neutral scenarios you can see the change developing!
Bodee loves the weekly trail outings that get her out of the town! Using a long line gives her the freedom to move at her own pace, but still safe and under control. She has learned to check in while ahead, and recall when asked, she’s shaping up to be a good trail partner!

Bodee has had quite the busy week! She has tackled learning foundational obedience behaviors and started muzzle conditioning with ease. This girl works hard and plays hard, both of which she gets to enjoy during her stay.
We have been able to keep her reactivity low while walking by giving her something else to focus on, which is maintaining her heel position. Using hot dogs, one of her favorite motivators, makes it easier for us to turn around and create distance whenever we do see a dog. She’s doing so well!
The mental clarity that comes with clear communication and expectations is just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to dog training. To change how our dog behaves, we also have to provide fulfilling enrichment throughout our daily lives. Bodee is learning games to effectively expend her energy, which will also contribute to overall calmness while on her walks.
In the upcoming week, she’ll be able to put her new skills to the test as we start to introduce more distractions! Way to go Bodee!

Nature Walks with Bodee!
Bodee is a 3 year old German Shepherd that is spending the next few weeks with me! This non-stop, always on the go, girlie has had some unpleasant experiences with dogs that have left her incredibly leash reactive. She is a big girl, and has become unruly on leash for her mom - which is incredibly stressful!
While Bodee is still settling in, we’re mostly getting to know each other and develop a relationship through play, and a nature walks!
We explored an empty trail alongside a lake, where we could escape from the neighborhood noise and were less likely to encounter other dogs. The natural setting provides relief both mentally and emotionally as she is allowed to explore, sniff, relax and enjoy the walk!
Of course I always sprinkle in a simple training exercise then give her the freedom of the long line again!

What a boy! Levi the American Bully was in need of some refresher obedience training. He had previously completed training elsewhere, but still struggled with leash reactivity and leash walks in general. Levi is a big boy and lives in the busy streets of DC, so he can’t be pulling around after the neighborhood squirrels!
Levi and I spent a lot of time just walking, and re-establishing leash manners and expectations. In order for our walks to be successful and less chaotic, I introduced structured games of tug that would allow him to appropriately express his prey drive. He LOVED it! The structured play helps to build better impulse control while he is excited and is a great way to burn off some energy before he goes for a walk. Levi did so well, and was such a happy guy the entire time!

Ciara is wrapping up her first week of training and she has accomplished SO much in such little time! She is a nervous girlie that struggles to go for walks without being spooked, and is wary of new guests in the home, so confidence building is at the top of our list! (And basic obedience, of course!) Once she opens up to you, she is a ray of sunshine that just wants to play tug or curl up on the couch.
She has been gaining more confidence with each walk around the neighborhood, and has relaxed enough to play at the park! Engaging in play in a public park was such a huge win for her, because it allowed her to release any nervous tension she was feeling at that moment. I am looking forward to her progress over the following week as I expose her to even more novel situations!

Kangarooooo! This sweet and energetic girl has been putting in the work over the past week learning how to control her impulses to chomp on anything and everything! She’s getting the hang of the foundational obedience skills with lower level distractions, and is steadily improving with each session.
‘Roo has an intense prey drive, so we’ve been playing a LOT of tug together as well. This will be an outlet for curbing her mouthiness, and once we’ve established a stronger “drop” command, she’ll be introduced to the flirt pole!

Oh man has Jack had a busy week! Jack’s biggest goals are calmer walks with less reactivity, building a reliable recall, and working on basic obedience. It’s pretty common for dogs with high prey drives to struggle with leash reactivity-I mean, they’re on a leash and can’t get to what they want!
Jack also LOVES to play fetch…actually, he likes to play “keep away” after chasing the ball, often bee-lining at you and zooming past at the last second. By using the leash, I’m able to reteach him this game! Giving him a fun and appropriate outlet to express his prey drive will help him develop those calmer walks. Keep workin’ hard bud!
