PETA, Alec Baldwin Enter Controversy Over Dillan the Bear

If anyone had doubts about poor Dillan’s plight at Union County Sportsmen’s Club, watching him lick up what looks like food pellets from the side of his dirty, dank cement kennel in this video should put those doubts to rest. This is no sanctuary. U.S. Department of Agriculture and Pennsylvania Game Commission need to step in!

HARTLEY TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A battle over a bear in Union County now has a celebrity involved. Actor Alec Baldwin recently sent a letter to Governor Tom Wolf asking for his help rescuing a bear from a wildlife sanctuary near Millmont. Dillan the Bear enjoyed some food on Wednesday inside his enclosure....

Bear at wildlife sanctuary in Union County the focus of controversy with animal welfare advocates

Abandoning Dillan to his current fate in his barren cement kennel is an outcome that ensures his stress, suffering and pain will continue for the rest of his life. Dillan deserves a chance at a better life with space, enrichment, a proper diet and much needed medical care.

Hartley Township, Pa. -- Dillan the bear was not granting interviews when your correspondent visited him at home in Weikert on a gray weekday afternoon earlier this December.

Our Hen House

This sounds achingly familiar. Union County Sportsmen's Club should be held accountable for their neglect of Dillan. U.S. Department of Agriculture and Pennsylvania Game Commission are failing to act now in this case.

The Animal Law Podcast episode on this case will be coming out tomorrow (Wednesday). It is a story of heroic plaintiffs and dogged lawyers on one side, and willful administrative neglect and loathsome defendants on the other. It is also the story of hundreds of animals who were allowed to live, and die, in utter misery. It is a success story, but one that came only after so many failures on the part of those who are supposed to be enforcing the law. Don't miss this episode!

Dear Mr. Spangler,

During this season of generosity, please reconsider retiring poor Dillan to The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado. Animals Asia

This is a group that rescues moon bears from intense confinement after many years — even decades. Dillan deserves this chance too.

It has been three years since we brought Winter🐻 , Bi Xanh🐻 , Poe🐻 , Snow🐻 , Cranberry🐻 and Ivy🐻 home for the holidays.

Since their rescue they have all put on a healthy amount of weight and their fur now looks absolutely luscious.

Saved from the stressful conditions they experienced on the bile farm, generous supporters from around the world made Christmas 2016 a special one for these bears.

🎄It was the first Christmas at their new home, the Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre. This rescue was the greatest gift they could possibly have received. 🎁 Now these six bears are loved, looked after and, more than anything, cherished. ❤️️

Asian black bear - Wikipedia

Dillan is an Asiatic Black Bear, also known as a moon bear. Learn about his species and you will understand more about how cruel his intense confinement in a cement kennel at Union County Sportsmen's Club is.

The Asian black bear (Ursus thibetanus, previously known as Selenarctos thibetanus), also known as the Asiatic black bear, moon bear and the white-chested bear, is a medium-sized bear species native to Asia that is largely adapted to an arboreal lifestyle.[2][3] It lives in the Himalayas, in the nor...

: All about moon bears

Did you know that Dillan is an Asiatic Black Bear, or moon bear? You can learn more about his species through this post. Please continue to speak out for him — and all the animals at the club. Dillan has been neglected for years. At one time the club may not have known better, but they certainly do now.

The Asiatic bear is famed as the most playful of all eight bear species, but sadly, it is also the most exploited.

The Truth About Sanctuaries | Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries

Union County Sportsmen’s Club is NOT a legitimate animal sanctuary. It is a roadside zoo that lacks any sort of adequate facilities and trained animal care staff. It fails to provide animals with adequate shelter, enrichment, diet, and veterinary care. It has been cited by the USDA a number of times for these issues. It has kept Dillan in what amounts to little more than a reinforced dog kennel for 10+ years.

Legitimate Sanctuaries versus Pseudo-Sanctuaries The following begins with an excerpt from an article written by GFAS. It appeared online at the Encyclopedia Britannica’s Advocacy for Animals: What if six months ago you made a contribution to an organization that claimed to be an animal sanctuary,...

PETA argues that the Union County Sportsman's Club and Wildlife Sanctuary is endangering a black bear in its care, and wants the animal moved.
