MEET OUR RESIDENTS:

HHER’s Second Chance was born to Helping Hearts on May 28, 2009.
We brought his mother home from New Holland in April, 2009. Wearing a USDA slaughter tag and heavy in foal, the mare was crammed into a back pen packed with other tagged horses, waiting to load into tractor trailers to ship to slaughter.

While we named the mare Rose, tracing her tattoo revealed her to be a registered Standardbred Becky Lane. She was bred to a Standardbred stallion, Worstcasescenario. A couple days after contacting the US Trotting Association, a representative called to give me additional information on Rose and an important heads up — She had a history of being aggressive and had killed her last 2 foals.
Both foals had been killed on their third day. I consulted with Eli, our vet, and we made preparations to allow the foal to nurse after birth so that he could get his colostrum, then pull him from the mare and bottle raise him.

Ultimately, Once we got Chance on the ground, happily, with careful management and minimal interference, Rose turned out to be a very doting and attentive mother and we didn’t need to follow through with our plans.
BUT, there were birthing complications. Chance was a dystocia. Malpositioned in the birth canal, Chance had a foreleg folded back, Rose couldn’t pass him. She was spotted out in the field one afternoon, up and grazing with just a single leg protruding. Quick handiwork corrected his position and Chance was pulled free. Eli examined him, and we waited. Chance rested for quite a while. We finally picked him up and put him on his feet so he could nurse. The first couple days he was a bit ‘slow’, but then as he became more active my concerns subsided.
However, by the time he was about 18 months, I noticed that he wasn’t hitting his developmental milestones. He was spooky about having his head touched. He was quick to panic and over-react to normal daily situations and stimuli. He had difficulty retaining training information. Attempts at saddle training were not successful. We started him at 3 yrs, decided to give him another year to mature, and then tried again at 4 yrs. I Consulted with multiple vets. The consensus was that he had likely experienced oxygen deprivation during his extended time in the birth canal. Our big, sweet, friendly, beautiful baby was going to be just that, a baby in perpetuity.

We initially considered adopting him out as a companion, but people just don’t want big, sometimes hyper perpetual lawn ornaments. I worried about his long-term safety, the safety of potential adopters, and had concerns how he would be treated and ramifications should someone decide They were going to break him to saddle.
So, Chance became one of our first Sanctuary horses. Now 16 years old, he’ll continue be with HHER for his lifetime - safe, secure, happy.

KEEP your pet. There most likely is NOT a better home out there.
Reality— Owner surrenders are the FIRST euthanized for space. Strays get a “stray hold”.

MEET OUR RESIDENTS:

Max arrived in February 2016 at the age of 25. HHER had networked for a home for him for the previous year while he remained with his owner. But homes for unrideable seniors are few and far between.

While he arrived without fanfare, since then he’s had a knack for making his presence known 😋 - he drums incessantly on his stall door for attention, has taken out pasture gates, has knocked down fencing. He knows how strong he is, so medicating and maintenance can be a challenge. Four years ago he pulled away from a volunteer, booked down the driveway and ran down the road causing havoc and a traffic jam. 😵‍💫

Surprisingly, despite his “Excess of Personality”, Max has only ever had One Sponsor, and that only lasted two months.
We’d LOVE to gain a Sponsor or two for our now 33 year old criminal.(Especially since his most recent shenanigans just Cost us a general Sponsor🙁). Almost everyone loves a bad boy, right? 😚

Sponsor Max!!!
