We’ve had another push back for our sweet boy Maximus. Mother Nature has not been all that kind with our plans for him.

Roadways are slushy and frozen, forcing our veterinarian to now be out on Tuesday. Our county’s Public Works have been instructed to not be on the roads and with the frozen ground, it’s just not in the plans for Maximus to leave us just yet.

As for now, we’ve postponed his final day with us until Tuesday. Understandably, we, and those assisting us with his final day can only do so much on these frozen roadways, but it surely aches our hearts more with each day, watching him hurt. I honestly think the ice and snow has numbed his hoof pain some, but it’s hard grieving for someone who hasn’t left yet.

We are thankful that he is experiencing the snow, and warm sunshine. That his last days are positive and happy surrounded by endless love and compassion.

We will continue to update everyone with our sweet Maximus. We wish we could do more for him, but the extent of his hoof neglect is catastrophic. Maximus cannot bare full weight on his hooves, and has two necrotic coffin bones, with one being nearly 100% dissolved. If there was any hope for his longevity, please know, we would do everything in our power. Allowing for him to continue to suffer as his owners have for many years now, we would be no different than them. We believe in humane care and treatment. Allowing for him to continue on with his pain level, condition and size, that would be inhumane of us, and we do not roll like that. ❤️‍🩹💔

We’ve rehabilitated many foundered and necrotic horses where pain was managed, however, this is the worse case of founder and necrotic coffin bone that even our vet has ever witnessed. Maximus being so big, places an abundant amount of pressure on that very painful and nearly missing coffin bone and hoof. His size does play a major roll in his longevity. We wish he had been cared for appropriately when he first foundered that way he could still have many happy years ahead of him. However, his care was gravely neglected which has significantly reduced that longevity. It’s not fair to him to remain in pain with no positive outcome or treatment to reverse or fix his condition. 🙏🏼

We measured a final total of 11” of snow at our facility! It continued to snow here well into 11pm.

Today is all sunshine and dryer air. The horses are loving this likely once in a lifetime experience, and are taking full advantage of their snow day.

Feeding in this snow has sure been an experience…

We have just over 8” of snow registering at the rescue and it’s still coming down!

Some horses love it, while others hate it. Either way, it’s been a beautiful snowy day that we’ve taken full advantage of. This is a once in a generation kind of event for Florida, and while we’ve enjoyed it, we want our warm weather back!

Here are a few pics from todays snow day fun! ❄️

Angel and Maximus experiencing a beautiful snow day! Angel wanted out so bad to frolick with the herd, so her and Maximus (right on her heels) came out for a little fun. ❄️🐎🐎❄️

We tried to reason with Lady Bug on why it’s vital to be blanketed with the incoming weather. ❄️

This poor little mare has had a very traumatic past, so small tasks for her care have proven quite difficult. She’s frightened by what we consider the most simplest of handling, and will full-body tremble until she understands that we mean no harm. Lady has lived a life in survival mode, which no domesticated animal should ever feel the need to do. This is because of aggressive/abusive handling approaches and cruel living conditions.💔

With a little enticement and a soft and slow approach, she finally understood our task and became more relaxed so that we could groom her and blanket.

Once she saw how darn cute she was in her brand new hot pink blanket, and felt the comfort of its warmth, she immediately relaxed and was at ease.

Small wins are BIG wins for these once abused darlings. 💖❄️🐎

Our sweet Maximus is enjoying a much more cozy winter blanket all thanks to long-time supporter Deborah Chris Swain!

A little update on this beautiful and sweet guy…

Maximus was originally scheduled to receive the last act of kindness tomorrow but due to the impending wintery weather and harsh conditions closing roads, our veterinarian has rescheduled this for Thursday.

The good news is that we do get to spend a few more days loving on Maximus and showing him the care he should’ve received all along.

He’s gone far too long in his current condition but our team is doing everything in our power to provide him with warmth, pain management and as much happiness as possible until we must say goodbye. 😞

Thank you Deborah for proving Maximus with this wonderful and warm donation and to all who are praying for this very special boy.

It’s such a shame that an entirely and easily preventable condition is how his story will end. 💔

We would like to give a big THANK YOU to the young ladies of the Escambia County 4-H Horse Club for braving the cold weather this morning to volunteer. The Horse Club members, Sarah, Izzy, Taylor, Abby, and Hannah along with their supportive parents, mucked all paddocks and broke up water troughs along the way. Thank you for your selfless dedication to our horses and our mission.

Angel absolutely loves her newly donated blanket!

We are anticipating 14 degrees real feel here by 7am tomorrow, which we are not looking forward to.

The herd is bundled up, warm mashes and extra hay is on the menu for overnight and tomorrow!

UPDATE: All blankets have been reserved! Thank you to all who responded or sent those in need our way! If more blankets become available we will make a spectate post listing those sizes. Thank you and stay warm! ♥️

🥶”Baby it’s cold outside.”🥶

Well, it WILL be very cold in the next 24-48 hours with temps projected in the 10s and teens at the lowest. Our area (Northwest Florida) is expecting the cold to hang around for a bit with snow and freezing rain to follow.

Don’t let those furbabies of yours go without!

We have three blankets left from our a ‘Community Winter Blanket Drive’ sized 72”, 75” and 76”.

Please message our page to confirm and reserve a blanket. If you have taken one last year or this year, please refrain from reserving one, as these blankets are for those in immediate need.

It’s going to rain followed by freezing temps. It’s incredibly difficult for horses to properly insulate their body temperatures with a wet coat. Keep them dry and warm if at all possible. 🥶🐎

This precious cutie patootie is still awaiting his forever home and family.

Joey is a 19 y/o Shetland Gelding, standing at 36 inches.

With his beautiful flaxen mane and tail he’s a handsome, fluffy and fun little fella with so much love to give.

Joey does have his preferences when it comes to his most ideal companion(s). He does not want to babysit so he is not considered good with young horses. His idea of a perfect companion is a older mare, either pony or full sized. He likes to follow the lead of a strong head mare.

Joey comes up-to-date on all vaccinations, dentals and farrier care. He is also microchipped and will be adopted with a contract.

Adoption fee: $400

Companion only home meaning no riding.

If you are looking for a sweet and fun little guy to join the ranks of your herd, please complete and return the adoption application below:

Approved applicants will be contacted for a meet and greet with the horse of their interest. 🐎🐎

Our herd and team would like to give a huge THANK YOU to Val for your very generous donation of 6 brand new blankets and salt blocks!

This was the first time that Val experienced Tiny Acres NWFL in person and said that she was “overcome by an overwhelming feeling of love, safety and happiness, and the sense of home”.

Our herd enjoyed your visit yesterday Val, and thank you again for your wonderful donation of blankets and salt! We are so grateful for you. 🥰🐎

Though we were hit with some anticipated but heartbreaking news with Maximus today, we do have a hopeful and bright future expected for his companion Angel.

Today, our veterinarian was out to also examine Angel, to pull a Coggins, perform a dental float, administer vaccinations and to assess her many open sores.

It was noted that Angels teeth were full of sharp points wrecking havoc on her mouth, a moderate wave and causing pain while chewing. We knew her teeth were in horrible shape based on how difficult chewing was for her.

Dr. Patrick examined her sores, which he did identify as summer sores and was very pleased with how much they had healed since arriving into our care. We were instructed to continue what we are doing in hopes to get these closed up before Summer begins (which is a prime time for summer sores).

Angel did have a slight fever of 101.7 which was determined to be linked to her sores and the mild cellulitis in her right front leg from the severity of the sore. This is expected to go to normal with a pain management regimen which we have begun.

Angels outlook is positive but it will not come without extensive rehabilitative care.

We are going to allow Maximus and Angel to spend their last days together enjoying each others company and once the time comes for Maximus to leave us, Angel (as with all of our animals) will be afforded the opportunity to grieve the loss of her companion.

Todays veterinary expenses totaled $628.95. ❤️‍🩹

Thank you to First Equine Veterinary Services for always showing patience, compassion and expertise with our rescue herd. We appreciate all that you do!

Also, thank you to everyone for your donations, shares and prayers for both Angel and Maximus.

🙏🏼❤️‍🩹🐎

Devasting news for this sweet and handsome guy.

Our veterinarian was out today to examine and assess Maximus’ condition and our greatest fear was confirmed.

Maximus is on borrowed time and we have been tasked with providing him with the best palliative care until we soon lay him to rest.

The extent of Maximus’ neglect is catastrophic. Confirmed extensive founder on both fronts, navicular, with a 100% necrotic and now dissolved coffin bone. His second coffin bone is 75% necrotic and working towards being fully dissolved. He has two deep puncture wounds that are infected but due to how severe his founder is, treating the puncture wound would only cause him greater pain and frustration.

We have chosen to provide Maximus with a peaceful departure from this world here at our facility but before we do that, he will get anything he wants and unlimited turn out.

It pains us that he is too far gone to fix, but we are happy that we have gotten this time to know him and in the least allow for him to go with his dignity.

Once a date for his peaceful passing is set, we will update everyone. Our veterinarian will be out to administer this last act of kindness.

This is not the outcome we hoped for but we also know when enough is enough for these beautiful and beloved creatures.

Please pray for Maximus and our entire team as we spend these next days with him. Sometimes our services arrive just a little too late.

❤️‍🩹😞🙏🏼 We love you Maximus! 🙏🏼😞❤️‍🩹
