LOST DOG PREVENTION
Simple Tools That Keep Dogs Safe

USE THE RIGHT TOOLS

Martingale Collars
• Prevent backing out of collars
• Ideal for dogs that spook or pull

Slip Leashes
• Quick, secure control
• Great for transitions and vet visits

Proper Leashes (NOT rope)
• Rope burns hands and snaps easily
• Use a standard nylon or leather leash

Gates at Doors
• Create a safety barrier
• Prevent door-dashing accidents

AVOID COMMON RISKS

• Do not leave dogs outside unattended
• Do not use rope, retractable, or worn leashes
• Do not assume a “trained” dog won’t bolt

REMEMBER

Most lost dogs escape during routine moments —
opening a door, a dropped leash, a sudden noise.

Prevention is easier than recovery.

LOST DOG EDUCATION -WHY WE USE A FEEDING STATION

Lost dogs are scared-
A feeding station gives them one safe place to return to for food.

• High-value food keeps the dog coming back to the same location
• No people present = less pressure on the dog
• Consistency builds trust and routine

WHY A TRAIL CAMERA IS CRITICAL

Most lost dogs come after dark — when no one is watching.

A trail camera allows us to:
• Confirm if the dog is eating the food at the feeding station
• See exact visit times and behavior
• Monitor safely without approaching
• Prevent chasing, spooking, or setbacks
• Plan next steps using real behavior — not guesswork.

IMPORTANT — PLEASE READ IF YOU COME ACROSS A LOST DOG FEEDING STATION

PLEASE DO NOT APPROACH THE FEEDING STATION OR ALLOW YOUR OWN PETS TO EAT FROM IT.

PLEASE DO NOT CALL, CHASE, OR SEARCH FOR THE LOST DOG IF YOU COULD ACROSS A FEEDING STATION

Lost dogs return when it feels safe.
The camera does the watching — people do not.

OUR CAMERAS ARE PLACED WITH PROPERTY OWNER PERMISSION,
MONITORED FOR THE DOG’S SAFETY. THANK YOU

LOST DOG EDUCATION
PLEASE READ

When a dog goes missing, especially after a car accident, slipping a collar, jumping from a vehicle, or escaping from a home, parking lot, trail head, restaurant, or gas station, our instinct is to search everywhere.

But here’s what we know from experience:

Lost dogs will usually circle back to the point of escape. In situations like these, over 90% of dogs return to that area if given time.

What helps:
Place high-value food and water at the escape location right away. (good base amount to use is a tin lasagna pan)

Use strong-smelling foods like hot dogs, cooked chicken, or hamburgers.

Adding liquid smoke on a rag above the food can help carry scent/ (do not pour on food)

Do not use fish or seafood — it attracts wildlife such as coyotes and raccoons which could push a dog farther away.

What doesn’t help:
Chasing
Calling out
Large groups searching- especially if your dog is skittish of new people.

A scared dog often feels hunted. Giving them time to settle is one of the most important steps in bringing them home safely.

Please share — education helps saves lives.

Please share to help lost dog owners- A LOST DOG THINKS THEY’RE BEING HUNTED

To a frightened dog, unfamiliar people calling, following, or surrounding them triggers survival mode.
What feels like help to humans feels like danger to the dog.

When a dog is lost and scared, being pursued causes them to run farther, hide deeper, and make dangerous choices.

WHAT HELPS BRING LOST DOGS HOME

Allow the dog to settle in one area

Stop chasing, calling, and approaching

Set up a feeding station in a consistent location

Limit interaction to one calm, familiar person

Use trail cameras to monitor safely and quietly

Follow a calm, patient recovery plan

Let the dog feel safe enough to stop running

Safety brings confidence.
Confidence brings them home.

MAKES RECOVERY HARDER

Chasing or following the dog

Calling their name repeatedly

Groups of people searching together-

People unfamiliar to the dog approaching them

Surrounding or cornering the dog

Trying to “persuade” a frightened dog to come closer

To a scared dog — this feels like being hunted, not helped.

Please:
Follow the process - as it has been proven time and time again.
