Reuniting After Separation establishes where everyone lands in the group. This happens whenever there is a separation within the group, even if it's a quick at popping out to the mailbox, or going to the bathroom.

For dogs, it's essential to know what everyone's place and responsibility is going forward.

Do it correctly, and you'll see your dog relax.

Do it INcorrectly, and your dog will suffer anxiety due to its confusion about what it's responsibility for the group is.

Here Tony and I explain and show why people get things so very wrong, without ever intending to

I think I've shared this before but I don't care...it's just too, too good!

This dog is evidencing leadership as canines understand it.

He is unflappable. He is clearly on the job. He has no time for foolishness at the moment, keeping everyone safe and alive.

He cannot be moved from his task.

And see how he turns his head away, ensuring he is sending clear communication to that sheep? It looks as though he's ignoring the sheep, but In effect in his own language he is saying, "I'm busy right now and will let you know when or if I wish to interact with you." HE is setting the terms, NOT the sheep.

This communication is what canines understand and offer to we humans. When we learn to send clear signals such as this back to our dogs during our day with them, we ease their minds, they're allowed to calm and relax and enjoy their lives without stress, without anxiety.

Simple. Kind. Profoundly effective.

I stand with Chihuahuas!

Dogs are dogs, no matter their size, with all of the instincts of their wild cousins intact.

Did you know that Chihuahuas are one of the breed that are euthanized at the highest rate in this country?

And the 'why' is simple: humans tend to treat smaller dogs as they would treat human babies and children. Because of this, the dog believes they must carry the burden of responsibility for the group, meaning the group's very survival.

When this confuse in dogs occurs, the canine's natural behaviors for protection become exaggerated by the stress the dog is feeling.

Imagine being in a completely different country where you don't speak the language, don't have knowledge of local custom or culture, have no one to support you in keeping everyone alive and are in an environment which is totally foreign to you. AND YOU'RE TINY!

All one can do is to fall back on what makes sense to you, and often it's in direct conflict with those you are trying desperately to keep safe.

End result: You're frazzled, frustrated, exhausted and by extension, a bit more "assertive" in your communication.

For Chihuahuas, this can mean the end of their lives.

Dogs are amazingly intelligent, creative, loving, devoted beings. Treat them as such, and not like a "toy".

I'm looking forward to this!

Monty Roberts's work with horses was the inspiration and catalyst for Jan Fennell's work with and for dogs. She had witnessed a demonstration done by Monty with a horse she herself knew personally. That experience changed her life and by extension, thousands of other lives, both human's and dog's.

Learn to "speak" a little of the animal's language, respect the animal's own perspective and needs, treat the animal with respect consistently, calmly and confidently in ways the animal itself can understand, and the reward is a deep, loving, responsive relationship of mutual respect.

What can be better than that?
