Some dogs bark excessively because they're anxious or fearful. In these cases, it's important to address the underlying issue to help prevent the barking. Consider working with a professional dog trainer or behaviorist to help identify the source of your dog's anxiety or fear. They can help you develop a training plan that will address the problem and reduce your dog's barking.

Have you ever seen your cat chattering their teeth while staring intently at a bird or squirrel outside? This behavior might be more instinctual than we realize. Feline behavior specialists have noted the similarity between the teeth chattering noise and the neck bite that wild cats use to quickly kill their prey.

Kittens and cubs in the wild have the opportunity to practice this special bite, but house cats may show their excitement or frustration at seeing potential prey they can't get to. If you notice your cat's tail getting puffy or twitching in a particular way while they make these chattering noises, it's a sign they're getting excited.

🦟 Lyme disease is a vector-borne bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. The blacklegged tick (i.e., deer tick) is the primary Lyme disease carrier, and can be found throughout many areas. The disease is transmitted when an infected blacklegged tick attaches and feeds on a warm-blooded mammal, including dogs, horses, and humans.

The bacteria enter the general circulation and trigger chronic health issues, including joint swelling and inflammation, heart damage, kidney failure, and neurologic problems. If your pet’s trigger is something you cannot change, such as a loud thunderstorm, fireworks, or construction noise, try to create a positive association with the trigger. You can do this by offering your pet treats or playing a favorite game during the trigger event to distract and calm them. Over time, your pet may begin to associate the trigger with positive experiences and be less likely to bark.

Another strategy is to desensitize your pet to the trigger. This involves gradually exposing your pet to the trigger at a low level and rewarding calm behavior. For example, if your dog barks at passing cars, you could start by exposing them to a parked car at a distance and reward calm behavior, then gradually move closer to passing cars. This can be a slow process, but with consistency and patience, your pet can learn to remain calm in the presence of the trigger.

Finally, it’s important to ensure that your pet is getting enough physical and mental stimulation. Boredom and excess energy can lead to excessive barking. Make sure your pet is getting enough exercise, playtime, and mental stimulation such as puzzle toys or training exercises. A tired and happy pet is less likely to bark excessively.

🐢🐱 Want to know if your furry friend is at a healthy weight? Here are some key points to keep in mind:

🐾 You should be able to feel their ribs under a slight fat covering.

🐾 Your pet should have a visible waistline when viewed from above.

🐾 Your pet should have an abdominal tuck.

🐾 If you can see your pet’s ribs and spine, they are too thin.

🐾 On the other hand, if your pet has no discernible waistline and their belly sags, they’re too heavy.

Ask our team for more information about your pet's body condition.
