Our Story
Mardan German Shepherds was originated in 2015, when we combined services from a long time, Nationally known, GSD show handler from York PA(Leslie Dancosse) & a SAR K9 trainer from Long Island, NY(Sue Condreras). We had a very successful 3 year run, taking our STUD dog, GCHG CH Stuttgart’s Now Don’t Refuse Me of Masrock, TC, OFA, “FANUCCI” to #1 German Shepherd Dog in the Country in 2017, after finishing #6 in 2016.
Fanucci suffered a life threatening accident at 14 months old, shattering his leg. The accident was so bad, Fanucci was almost euthanized that day. He underwent a long surgery, and an arduous rehab, and Surgeons said he may never walk the same again, let alone run around a show ring. But no one told Fanucci that! In 2015 he earned himself the title of “Comeback Kid”, and in 2017, he was #1 in the country. In 2018, he was one of the favorites to win at Wesminster, until a hematoma caused his ear to flop, and we had to pull him from the show at the last minute. It was a heartbreaking decision, as he was at the top of his game. All his owners were present, as was the amazing surgeon who had put his leg back together three years ago. Everyone was pulling for Fanucci to win Westminster this year, but it wasn’t to be. A month later, in March of 2018, Fanucci’s breeder and owner, Leslie Dancosse, passed away suddenly, and unexpectedly, leaving Fanucci and all the other dogs lost and devastated. I, Sue Condreras, was Leslie’s partner in life and in this business, and have also been lost and devastated since she died. There is no recovering from this loss. Leslie was an integral part of Mardan, and the reason this program was started. She taught me everything I know about showing dogs, and made me the handler I am today. She gave me the opportunity to show the #1 dog in the country, a once in a lifetime opportunity.
While I am doing my best to hold the torch for Mardan now, things are not the same. I have downsized our kennel from 13 dogs to 6, soon to be 4. Fanucci remains with me, and will always be here. He is officially retired, although he continues to sire some beautiful puppies. Cali, our SAR dog, who also participates in sheep herding and dock diving and was Leslie’s heart dog, will always be here as well. I have two of Cali’s puppies with me, Bruno and Sonoma. Those are the four that will remain.
While things may change in the future, I am showing at select shows only. Fanucci is on his way to hopefully earning his ROM (Registration of Merit) for siring at least 10 Champions. He will earn a working title as well, either at sheep herding or rally, also earning him an AOE (Award of Exellence). Cali will continue dock diving, sheep herding and dock diving. Bruno and Sonoma will also try some sheep herding and dock diving.
