🎂 Today, the Wisconsin Humane Society celebrates 145 years of service to the community! Founded in 1879 as the first humane society in the state, several historical Milwaukee leaders were involved in the creation of our organization, including Samuel Marshall of M&I Bank, and Captain Frederick Pabst who cared deeply about the health and happiness of the horses who pulled his beer wagons. Zeus came to us emaciated with a skin condition, pressure sores, an ear infection, a respiratory infection, and signs of dental disease. Now, he’s gained more than 25lbs, he’s happy as can be, and he’s on the road to a full recovery. We have the very best community and we are tremendously grateful for each and every one of you!

Bella was just 6 months old when she arrived at WHS limping from a broken femur.
X-rays revealed a complicated fracture that was unlikely to heal properly, and our vets determined that amputating her leg was the best path forward. A few weeks after her surgery, she was free of pain and navigating the world like a champ. Before long, she wiggled her way into the hearts and home of a new family.
"Bella has been an amazing addition to our family! She has brought so much joy to our life and our granddaughters can’t wait to come over to play with her. Bella loves car rides, walks, playing with her toys, and snuggling up to us on the couch. She no longer needs to be crated at night or while we are gone. Although, we rarely go anywhere where she is not able to tag along."
Congratulations, Bella! We are so glad to see you thriving and loved, and we are forever grateful to the supporters who helped make your journey possible!

💌 Would you consider making a gift to support dogs like Zeus? Donations will be MATCHED for by some incredible friends until midnight tonight!
When Zeus arrived at WHS, the 3-year-old pup was emaciated. His skin was red, itchy, and inflamed, with patches of thinning and missing fur. His ears were infected. His eyes were infected. Even his teeth showed signs of disease. Despite the pressure sores across his body, he wagged and wiggled to greet us, eagerly soaking up all the attention he could get. Within a few weeks of treatment and a specialized diet plan, Zeus gained 23lbs and his conditions have started to clear up. He continues to make progress in our care, all thanks to the support of people like you. ❤️

Your gift will also support cats like Eleven, who underwent amputation surgery after a badly broken leg, and pups like Bubba who required eye surgery and a specialized diet plan to help him gain weight. All three of these precious patients are currently recovering under the watchful care of our vet team, alongside hundreds of others who needed medical treatment across our organization.

We love getting adoption updates and we love sharing them with you even more! This is Olive - her adoptive family reached out to us last week with the sweetest story:
"I just wanted to share an update about our sweet Olive girl! She is doing so well and slowly becoming more brave with each passing day. She started doggy training classes last week to build her confidence! She got to meet with the trainer's dog this week and they both got along great! She is also getting along well with our 2 kitties. We had Christmas photos done last weekend and she was an absolute model! Look at her adorable face! She also experienced what I am assuming is her first snowfall! She went crazy in the yard and loved it!!"

💖 With the support of a dedicated friend, WHS highlights older pets through our program. Today, Sally would like you to meet her newest friend, Gunner! This 10-year-old is a sweet gentleman, a beautiful walker, very grateful when being offered treats, and loves to get back scratches! If you would like to meet this senior pup, stop by our Milwaukee Campus during adoption hours 💛

Special thanks to Standard Process Inc. for their support of senior dogs like Gunner! Not only will Gunner's adopter go home with a gift certificate to our retail store, but they’ll also receive a complimentary gift bag courtesy of our friends at Standard Process.

Early this morning, a driver left westbound Hwy 33 in Saukville at a high rate of speed and struck the Wisconsin Humane Society Ozaukee Campus. No animals or staff were harmed as the car crashed into the building just west of the main entrance, and as far as we understand it, the driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Details about what led up to the crash remain unclear.

Staff were onsite within minutes of notification, an emergency crew is securing the building, and a building inspector is onsite to ensure the building is safe to use. The most significant damage is to the animal arrivals area, which serves as the front desk for intaking stray animals, lost animal redemptions, surrender appointments, and more. That area will require extensive repairs.

The WHS management team is working on a plan to reroute services from the main entrance area, and care for the animals inside the building has not been interrupted. *Thank you so much to the first responders, volunteers, and our staff for making sure the building is safe – and the animals are getting lots of TLC today!

Did you know that WHS does not receive any general government funding, and we are not a part of any national umbrella groups? We rely on the generosity of supporters like you to keep our organization running, but there are many ways to make an impact beyond the typical one-time monetary gift!

💘 Happy Valentine's Day! 💘 Just like us, our canine companions love to enjoy yummy treats, so we gave our dogs some extra enrichment to celebrate how much we love them! Today, nearly 5,000 lbs of dog food, cat food, and litter were donated by Pick 'n Save and Metro Market filling every shelf in our Furry Friends Pet Food Pantry! We are beyond grateful to these businesses for their generosity and support, allowing us to continue our mission of making a difference for animals and the people who love them ❤
