Maggie's finds herself inundated in an ocean of native seed. These fluffy ones are tall thimbleweed (Anemone virginiana). Many of our native seeds can be stored in a dry, cool environment until they can be planted at the perfect time. Staff were able to plant this species and many others during the beginning of a snow event early this winter.
Why do we wait to plant?
This timing allows the seeds to be more protected from birds that would eat this buffet of scattered seeds. Plus this winter sowing timeline allows for the natural cold and moist conditions that many native species require to break "dormancy" and sprout. Species with built-in dormancy mechanisms prevent seeds from germinating during unfavorable conditions, like during a warm spell in winter.

Maggie wants to showcase one of her favorite trees: the American beech!
The smooth, gray bark is unlike any other and is often compared to an elephant's skin 🐘
The buds are one of its most recognizable features during winter. The long, slender, pointed buds resemble sharp spears. Their deep yellowish brown color stands out against the smooth, gray bark of the tree
Unlike many deciduous trees that shed their leaves entirely, the American beech often retains its leaves throughout winter. The retention of these leaves, a phenomenon known as marcescence, is more common in younger trees and lower branches

These cold winter months present opportunities to curl up with a good book and a nice mug of coffee or hot coco. The naturalists at Wehr Nature Center have lovely nature book recommendations 📚
Some of you might be familiar with "Braiding Sweetgrass" by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Her newest book release came out this November and goes further in depth on the theme of reciprocity with the natural world and how we can incorporate acts of reciprocity in our everyday lives
Maybe it is donating books to a Little Free Library, the gifting of extra produce from the garden to a neighbor or gifting a neighbor homemade jams and pies. These are just a few ideas offered

: 🎤Staghorn Sumac (probably)

As the winter months settle in, the natural world transforms into a serene and often overlooked landscape. One plant that stands out during this time is Staghorn Sumac (Rhus typhina), known for its stunning winter display.

This plant features clusters of vibrant red drupes that persist through the cold season, providing a vital food source for birds and wildlife when other resources are scarce. These fruits add a splash of color to the otherwise muted winter palette.

The plant's distinctive branching pattern becomes more pronounced in winter. Leafless branches, resembling the antlers of a stag, create a striking silhouette against the winter sky. This unique structure adds an element of intrigue and beauty to winter landscapes.

By celebrating and understanding the plants around us, we can foster a deeper connection with the natural world, even during the quiet winter months. 🌿✨
