AVAIN INFLUENZA and CATS. There have been confirmed cases of avian influenza in wild waterfowl in Chicago, and some wild birds have washed up on shore here in Milwaukee. While there is a very low risk of it spreading to humans, please wear a mask and gloves if handling deceased birds. Also contact [email protected] with any information about wild dead birds found.
KEEP YOUR CATS INDOORS. Multiple reported cases of Avian Influenza spread to cats by eating infected dead birds or raw food diets that used birds that have contaminated birds in the food. Even pasteurized versions have been known to spread the virus still.
In cats, the illness may start with loss of appetite, lethargy, and fever, then quickly progress, with cats exhibiting:
-Neurologic signs (e.g., ataxia, circling, tremors, seizures, or blindness)
-Severe depression
-Copious oculonasal discharge
-Other respiratory signs, including tachypnea, dyspnea, and possibly sneezing or coughing
If your cat has any of these signs, please take them to the ER ASAP and let the ER know that you are suspicious of Avian Influenza before entering the clinic so they can take necessary safety measures to protect themselves and other pets.
While it is highly unlikely the virus would spread from cat to human, it is not impossible.
Dogs are less susceptible but still refrain from them handling birds that have died from unknown causes or feeding raw diets.
