Tomorrow is Maizeyβs 1st Birthday! ππ₯³
Check out one of her awesome recall reps at the park this afternoon - it can be challenging for young dogs to come away from hard distractions (like running and sniffing at the park!) on their own so itβs our job to manage the situation to make sure sheβs set up for success. To do this, weβve been using a long line to prevent her from not coming when we call, while also rewarding her heavily when she does respond to our call and when she checks in with us on her own. π€

Nosework is a fantastic activity that you can teach to your dog year round and for a very low cost. This is how we personally start the process but there are many other ways to approach it. We love starting this process with our excursion dogs as well.

Sometimes when dogs are in a new place and really excited, unsure, or overstimulated, they arenβt interested in taking treats.
This is very common and normal! The world is an exciting place and itβs our job to teach our pups how to confidently work in new places. What Iβve found is that being patient while they take in the new environment is key. Distance is your friend, get further way from whatever is overwhelming your pup if possible. And often times getting on the dogβs level can help a lot!
I take some time petting Ashton and waiting for him to get comfortable before trying to ask anything of him. When he did start taking treats, I tried making the session really fun by tossing treats and running with him. What are some ways that you help your dog get comfortable in new places? π€

Iβm rewarding her on the ground next to me to help build value for walking at my side. Iβm also doing lots of turns to help set her up for success in this busy environment!

Cone training
The βcone of shameβ isnβt very fun for most dogs to wear, but we can work on making it a positive experience!
My goal here is for Maggie to shove her face into the cone herself, to give her more confidence with putting the cone on. I highly recommend working on this (and similar behaviors like teaching your dog to put their nose into a muzzle) before you they need to wear one, that way you can take your time making it a good learning experience. π€
